Under the By-laws of the College drawn up in 1929, two Vice Presidents were to be chosen from among the Fellows of the College. The Senior Vice President, or in his absence, the Junior Vice President, was to undertake the President's duties in the case of the latter's inability or unwillingness to undertake his duties. The Senior Vice President was to be the Vice President who had held office for a longer period. The Vice President assumed primary responsibility for overseas affairs in the early 1980s; prior to this time the College Secretary was responsible for overseas affairs.

The Vice President assumed primary responsibility for overseas affairs in the early 1980s; prior to this time the College Secretary was responsible for overseas affairs.
The records have been produced by the office of the Vice President and transferred to the Archives by the Administration Department.
Records of the Office of the Vice President/Overseas Officer of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 1960-1999, comprising correspondence of the Vice President, as Overseas Officer, relating to overseas affairs and with various overseas committees of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 1955-1999.
The records listed below were transferred in batches to the Archives over a period of years, appraised by the College Archivist 10 years after transfer and disposed of in accordance with Disposal Agreement No 8 between the Archivist and the vice president's secretary. The majority of files have been extensively weeded to remove duplicates and ephemera.
Further accruals are expected.
The series is divided into two sections, based on existing indexes held in the Vice President's offices: Overseas Officers' correspondence with overseas committees, arranged alphabetically by country, comprising two files for each country, a reference and/or representative committee file and a general information file; general correspondence, alphabetically arranged. Correspondence concerning overseas committees generally will be found in this class, as will one or two files on representative or reference committees.
Open 20 years after last date on file.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists holds Records relating to the College's overseas committees and councils prior to the involvement of the Overseas Officer, including copies of the committees' own records, are to be found in B9. Records relating to overseas affairs will also be found in the papers of College presidents at A4; files of presidents relating specifically to overseas affairs, 1969-1999, are at A4/20 and A4/26. Sir Anthony Alment's papers on the first conference of chairmen of overseas councils and reference committees in 1979 are at A4/17/65-68.
