Records, 1935-1992, of the League for Democracy in Greece and associated bodies. Pre-1945 material includes a set of the Balkan Herald, 1935-1940, and surviving papers, 1943-1945, of the League's predecessor, the Greek United Committee, and one of its supporters, E Athanassoglou. Notably there are proofs of Sir Compton Mackenzie's The Wind of Freedom (published in London, 1944) and a photocopy of a telegram from Winston Churchill prohibiting favourable mention of EAM-ELAS by the BBC, 1944. The papers of the League itself date from 1945 to 1975 and include a large collection of press cuttings covering all British and some foreign press references to Greece during the period of the League's activity, with some later cuttings concerning Greece to 1992; material produced by the Greek News Agency including the Weekly Survey of Greek News and later monthly surveys, covering Greek and foreign press output and the Free Greek Radio Broadcasts, complete from November 1946 to September 1953 and January 1969 to January 1974 but otherwise incomplete, the contents of particular value for the period of the Civil War, 1947-1949, as they form a rare source for the broadcasts of Radio Free Greece; and eight volumes of the League's own duplicated information and organizational circulars. There are copies of all official British reports on Greece: TUC (Citrine), Legal Mission, March 1946 Election Observers, All-Party Parliamentary Delegation (1946); a fairly complete collection of Hansard for parliamentary references to Greece; reports of the UN Commission for observing the Balkans (1947-1950); daily broadcasts of the Greek refugee radio at Bucharest, 1970-1974; a large collection of pamphlets, leaflets and news bulletins, British and foreign; a large collection of material from similar organisations in other countries and from Greek refugee committees; and specialist journals. Over 280 files of the League's correspondence and information material cover its various campaigns. Over 23 files represent other organisations which donated material to the League's archives: British Branch of the Patriotic Anti-Dictatorial Front (PAM), Campaign for the Release of All Political Prisoners in Greece, European-Atlantic Action Committee on Greece, Greek Committee against Dictatorship. The papers include an important collection of archive material, arising from the League's work to stimulate British parliamentary action, particularly regarding persecution, on Greek government repression, Law 375/1936, the Emergency Measures Act of June 1946, Law 509/1947 on 'subversion', the operation of the special courts-material and the security committee, and the conditions in prisons and concentration camps, including dossiers on the cases of individual prisoners, supplemented by thesis material on Greek political legislation since 1921. There is a card index of junta detainees; material from the prisons and concentration camps, including two volumes of smuggled appeals (some in microscopic writing); and personal files on individual political prisoners and concentration camps detainees, 1945-1964, 1967-1974. A small library contains unusual publications of the Greek left. Other material comprises a photographic collection, in 18 albums, on occupation, resistance, liberation, civil war, prisons, prisoners, concentration camps, Greek refugee children, and activities abroad; loose photographic items; four reels of film including a Czech film of evacuated Greek children, c1949; and a collection of organisational stamps. Post-1975 material relates to the League's successor, the Friends of Democracy in Greece. Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, offprints and articles of Dr Milos Sekulich, 1924-1984 (mainly 1941-1984). The material relates mainly to Yugoslavia and Yugoslav, specifically Serbian emigre politics. Some of the major themes of the material are the conflict within the Serbian Orthodox Church in Britain caused by accusations of communist influence, attempts at commemorating and rehabilitating the memory of General Draza Mihailovic, attempts to publicise the Croatian Ustashi atrocities against Serbs and libel cases brought by Sekulich against other members of the Serbian emigre community. There is a small amount of material on his medical interest and research into tuberculosis.

Papers of concentration camp inmates, 1942-1944, comprise copies of correspondence concerning concentration camps and the death of Jews and notably include a letter from the commandant of Gross Rosen concentration camp, Lower Silesia, to the Gestapo, Düsseldorf regarding the disposal of belongings of deceased Jew, Max Zobel, 1942; letter from Ernst Kaltenbrunner to all police chiefs stating that all executions are to be reported to the local justice department, with reasons for the executions withheld, 1942 and a letter from Stürmbahnführer, SD Latvia, suggesting a lack of concern about notifying the relatives of dead Jews, 1942.

Postcard from L Schien, 1944, is a copy of a postcard sent by Schien from Theresienstadt to her children in Berlin.

Papers of the Neumann family, 1941-1948, comprise correspondence between Lisel Neumann and friends including mention of Lutz's internment and eventual release, 1941; unidentified post-war correspondence, 1947-1948; eyewitness account of former Theresienstadt inmate, 1946 and a letter from Elsie Rinteln, a non-Jewish woman married to a Jew describing how they tried to emigrate and how her husband was arrested several times and transported to camp Vernet, 1948.

Papers of Joseph Langland, undated, comprise copies of his poems about Buchenwald and Hiroshima entitled 'Buchenwald near Weimar'; 'The Lotus Song'; 'A Hiroshima Lullaby' and a copy of an entry from Who's Who in America.

The personal papers of Vicky Abrams, 1900-1989, notably comprise her personal papers and correspondence, 1031/1/1-206; personal papers and correspondence of other family members, 1031/2/1-108 and material regarding Neu Beginnen, 1031/3/1-12.

Vicky Abrams's personal collection comprises the bulk of the total papers and notably contains a Vienna University report book, 1925 (1031/1/1); references from Abrams employer Das Magazin, 1933 (1031/1/2-3); Gestapo protective custody order, 8 August 1938 (1031/1/7); release permit from KZ Lichtenburg, Pretin, Saxony,13 March 1939 (1031/1/8). The collection also includes photographs including portraits of Abrams taken in KZ Lichtenburg (1031/1/15); correspondence from Abrams to her family in Vienna, written from prison [mostly KZ Lichtenburg]; correspondence between Vicky Abrams and the following former comrades and authors of articles about Neu Beginnen: Georg Müller, Helga Lichtenecker, Henry Hellmann, Ernst Lowe, Rainer Sandvoss, Otto Sperling and Richard Loewenthal (Rix). The collection also comprises writings of Vicky Abrams including poetry written in Jauer prison camp, Saxony, 1937-1938 (1031/1/202); draft accounts of life for women in Nazi prison camps, (1031/1/205).

The second section of this collection contains papers and correspondence of Abrams family members (1031/2/1-108) most notably from Hans Julius to the family ; the third section, concerning Neu Beginnen, notably contains copy documentation and articles about Neu Beginnen including a copy indictment against members of the organisation, dated 27 August 1936; articles about Neu Beginnen (1031/3/2 and 1031/3/4) and obituaries of Walter and Ernst Lowe (Löwenheim) (1031/3/6-9).

The papers in this collection consist chiefly of photographs of the work of the sculptor and medallion maker, Fred Kormis, 1913-1987. In addition there is some correspondence mostly relating to his work, including letters of thanks from Lord Mountbatten, Menachem Begin and members of the British War Cabinet during the Second World War, for whom Kormis sculpted medallions.

Papers of Bern Brent and Otto Bernstein, comprise a typescript translation by Bern Brent of his father's experiences in the late 19th century of growing up in Elberfeld and Kassel prior to moving to Berlin including descriptions of life growing up in late 19th century Elbersfeld and Kassel (-/1); life in turn of the century Germany and during the First World War (-/2) and his experiences as an inmate of Theresienstadt (-/3). Bern Brent, the depositor, provides us with an account of his experiences on the ship, the 'Dunera', bringing refugees from Europe to Australia where he made his home (-/4).

Personal correspondence of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch with family members, documenting in part the experiences of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and her sisters in Bergen Belsen concentration camp and in England, 1945, and the experiences of their parents prior to transportation to their deaths, close to the Lublin Ghetto, 1942.

Papers of Lord Fisher of Camden, 1936-1941, comprise a Gestapo file of correspondence and reports relating to the political reliability of Heinrich Niemöller, retired clergyman and father of Martin and Wilhelm Niemöller. It contains original correspondence between the Gestapo offices in Düsseldorf, Bielefeld and Wuppertal, the Reichssicherheitshauptamt and the Reichspressekammer, 1936-1941. The collection also includes a report from the commandant of Dachau concentration camp to the Gestapo, Düsseldorf, relating to Leo Lorch, a Jewish inmate, 1938.

Heilbrunner's account of life in Dachau, 1933, is a typescript memoir of Jewish inmate, Heilbrunner, in 1933. Written in the form of a narrative in the first person; structured into four chapters, describes in some detail the conditions in the camp and the brutality of the camp guards, contains manuscript annotations and corrections.

Papers of Osnabrück war crimes trial and appeal, 1968-1970, comprise a trial judgement against 5 former members of Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, in which the state court of Osnabrück found 3 of the defendants guilty of mass murder and 2 of being accomplices to mass murder in Italy in 1943, 1968, and a trial judgement of the appeal of the 5 defendants, in which the Bundesgerichtshof upheld the appeal on the grounds that the period of 20 years under the statute of limitations had lapsed, 1970.

Papers of Annie Hoek-Wallach, c 1943, 1987, notably include an illustrated book entitled Ha-ha, Ja ja written and illustrated by Annie Hoek-Wallach, dedicated to her husband, Dr. Henri Hoek, c 1943; notes documenting the lives of Annie and Henri Hoek, placing the illustrated book Ha ha Ja ja in context, undated, and a possibly incomplete, taped interview with Annie Hoek-Wallach, 1987.

Papers of Erich Kaiser, 1939-1986, comprising original correspondence notably between Erich and sister Ilse, 1939-1940; examples of Erich Kaiser's journalism, 1939 onwards; miscellaneous papers including a letter from Erich's father to relatives in New York, 1941 and correspondence with the Wiener Library Endowment Appeal to Ilse Kaiser regarding an entry in the Wiener Library Memorial book for Erich Kaiser, 1986.

Papers of Gurs and other French concentration camps, 1940-1941, include reports and correspondence relating to conditions in Gurs and other French concentration camps, many from former inmates. Reports notably include 'Reports from occupied and unoccupied France' (WL1072/5) and '4000 in Not taube Hilfsorganisationen' (WL1072/11), describing conditions in Saint-Cyprien internment camp and correspondence includes a copy letter from the Archbishop of Toulouse, Jules Saliege (1072/9), and letters from inmates.

Papers concerning Theresienstadt, 1940s, comprise copies of a report by Dr Muneles on the Hebrew book cataloguing project at Theresienstadt, 1945; typescript report regarding Theresienstadt, an inventory of the land and property, 1945; history of Theresienstadt during the Nazi era and typescript report on the situation there, providing statistical information relating to the inmates and transcriptions of documents produced during the camp's existence by both the Nazi camp authorities and the Jewish self-governing body.

Papers of Norbert Masur, 1945, 1993, comprise a report describing a meeting between Norbert Masur and Himmler in Berlin, 20 April 1945 concerning the release of female prisoners from Ravensbrück concentration camp, and correspondence regarding Norbert Masur's report, 1993.

Papers concerning Breendonk Camp, Belgium, 1944 comprise a report on Breendonk concentration camp containing the following sub-headings: atrocities committed against the civilian population of Breendonk; details of life and conditions within the camp; particulars of Germans and collaborators mentioned in the report; appendices including statements and summaries of statements made by former inmates.

Report of transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, 1941, comprises a certified copy of a report about the transport of Jews from Düsseldorf to Minsk, including Jews from Essen and Wuppertal, by Hauptmann der Schutzpolizei, Meurin. The report has the following sub-headings: description of the transport; description of the city and ghetto of Minsk; Russian POWs; return (to Düsseldorf) of the Transportkommando and recommendations.

A letter from Reichsführer SS, Himmler, to Chef der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD, 1942, regarding the removal of patients from the Jewish hospital in Munich to Terezin, as the premises were required for a school for nurses and midwives from Lebensborn.

Correspondence of the Ohly family, 1941-1947. This collection documents in part the experiences of a German Jewish family from Munich. The papers include original correspondence from friends and relatives and material from the Jewish organisations which arranged the details of the transport to Terezin. Includes: correspondence from Karl Traumann in Gurs, 1941, and Anna Ansbacher, Switzerland, 1945; papers and instructions from the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde (Jewish Community), Munich and the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland (National Organisation of German Jews) and postcards from Terezin to Gertrud Ohly from Lotte Pariser, 1944.

Papers of the office of Reichsführer SS, 1938-1944, mostly emanate from the office of Reichsführer SS and deal with administrative matters. The collection comprises correspondence between the office of the Reichsführer SS and Reichskulturwalter Hans Hinkel (mainly) regarding administrative and cultural matters, 1939-1944 and an incomplete monthly information sheet Befehle und Mitteilungen, 1939-1942. It most notably includes two original letters from Reichsführer SS, Himmler (1144/1/14-/23); an incomplete set of an in-house information sheet providing instructions to SS members on a variety of matters such as dress protocol for visits to concentration camps by SS members (1144/2/4); qualification for wearing the 'Death's Head' ring of the SS (1144/2/2); and orders forbidding membership of clubs deemed inappropriate.

Correspondence of Elise Steiner and other family papers, 1938-1940. The collection documents the day to day activities, hopes and aspirations of a Jewish family in Vienna on subjects including gratitude that at least one child was able to escape and moreover to continue with her education; efforts to find a place on the Kindertransport for Leo Steiner; news of the fate of other family members who had managed to emigrate to various countries and the takeover of the family business. Despite the increasing difficulties of life in Vienna exemplified by the occasional suicide of friends and the growing fear of being out on the streets, there is a sense that life has to go on. Mention is made of the celebration of Jewish festivals and of training for new occupations. Whilst the prospect of emigration recedes, the family continues to make preparations for a future departure by selling off possessions and studying English.

There are descriptive summaries of all the letters (in German). Other papers comprise a typescript copy of the family tree, a copy of typescript notes on Steiner family history and a copy of a photograph.

Fate of Hungarian Jewry collection, 1943-1994, notably comprises a copy memorandum to Secretary Morgenthau, (copy of original which dates from 1943) (1151/1), concerning his request to review developments regarding the World Jewish Congress' programme for the evacuation of Jews from Romania and France; copy of a letter from JW Pehle, Executive Director of the War Refugees Board, to J. Mcloy, Assistant Secretary of War, (copy of original which dates from 1944) (1151/4), enclosing copies of eye-witness accounts of Auschwitz and Birkenau received from the Board's special representative in Bern recommending the bombing of the camps; memorandum to the Assistant Secretary of War regarding suggestion of bombing camps, setting out 5 reasons why this is not recommended (copy of original which dates from 1944) (1151/5) and a copy of a transcript of a secret memorandum from the American Legation in Stockholm to the Secretary of State, Washington, regarding gassing and deportation of Hungarian Jews (copy of original which dates from 1944) (1151/6).

Material, 1886-1994, comprising copies of published and unpublished documents including a dedication to the mayor of Koritschen by members of the Jewish community; article by Eric Walters-Kohn, March 1994 on his experiences in Dachau and Buchenwald; copy of an article by Eric Walters-Kohn from Die Gemeinde, (the official paper of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien), 15 March 1994, regarding the life of Dr Louis Poborski, a distant relative, and formerly close friend of Theodor Herzl.

Papers of the Internationale Auschwitz Komitee, 1959, comprising copies of statements from former prisoners of Auschwitz about the activities of the following former SS men who worked there: Wilhelm Boger, Franz Hofmann, Rudolph Höss, Oswald Kaduk, Lachmann, Josef Mengele, Hans Stark, Eduard Wirth and Josef Klehr.

Minutes of a meeting held between Ing. Georg Vogel and Major Kusmin, 1945, concerning the repatriation of some Czech nationals which Kusmin authorised on receipt of medical certificates and a statement that they are free of lice. The remaining minutes deal with applications for food and clothing and the need for more disinfectors following the removal of the Russian ones.

Order from the Führer des SS Oberabschnittes Österreich, Vienna, to all SS units referring to an order of Gauleiter Buerckel that all section leaders were to be responsible for preventing actions by the SS against Jews and that if measures have to be taken against Jews these would be carried out by the authorities and the Gestapo, 5 April 1938.

Correspondence relating to Julian Layton's activities with internees, Dec 1936-Mar 1993, including reference to the Kitchener Camp, Richborough, Kent; correspondence with the Rothschild family, Great Britain, including a copy agreement between Layton and James Rothschild on the provision of financial assistance to help refugee children and correspondence and papers relating to the experiences of those aboard the 'Dunera'. Julian Layton's personal diaries including reference to his activities with regard to the welfare of internees, 25 Mar 1941-22 Dec 1944.

Original (and some copy) correspondence between friends and relatives of the Cahn Hepner family, 1874-1952, many of whom perished in the Holocaust.

Papers from seven of the twelve Subsequent Nuremberg Trials, 1938-1948, comprising copies of trial transcripts including trial judgements, reports and correspondence. The trial transcripts are verbatim. The cases are as follows:

The 'Medical Case', officially entitled United States vs. Karl Brandt: 20 of the 23 defendants were doctors, and the charges related principally to medical experimentation on human beings. Including 'CINFO Report No. 5': confidential report from the US Director of Intelligence, Military Government, Germany, consisting of an account of Nazi medical experimentation on Jews, including the case of Ahnenerbe, the institute for war related scientific research; sterilization; luminescent microscopy; and various other forms of experimentation, interspersed with transcripts of documents and a commentary, including appendices which provide short biographical details of staff involved in SS medical research and a roster of Ahnenerbe personnel and copy of an extract from the trial judgement entitled 'Permissible Medical Experiments'.

The 'Justice Case', officially designated United States of America vs. Josef Altstoetter, et al, of the 16 defendants indicted, nine were officials in the Reich Ministry of Justice. The others included the chief public prosecutor of the People's Court and several prosecutors and judges of both the Special Courts and the People's Courts. These papers comprise a part of the official transcript of the judgement and sentencing, 3-4 Dec 1947.

The 'IG Farben Case', the trial of 23 officials of I.G. Farben, officially designated United States of America vs Carl Krauch et al. Krauch was a member of the company's managing board from 1934 to 1940, and thereafter, until 1945, the chairman of its supervisory board. The material in this collection consists of transcripts of parts of the proceedings and documents relating to the case.

The 'Hostage Case', officially designated United States of America vs Wilhelm List et al. The term 'hostages' was used by the Germans to designate innocent civilians executed in retaliation for German soldiers killed. Comprising opening statement for the prosecution, 15 Jul 1947.

The 'Krupp Case', officially designated United States of America vs Alfred Felix Alwyn Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach et al, was the trial of the 12 officials of the Krupp concern. Papers include trial judgement, 31 Jul 1948; dissenting opinions of trial judges; reports on the Krupp complex produced by the German Economic Department of the Foreign Office, 1945; report and other papers on Baron Kurt von Schroeder prepared by Foster Adams and Emil Lang, of the Finance Division of the Military Government for Germany.

The 'Ministries Case' was officially designated United States of America vs Ernst von Weizsaecker et al. It became known as the 'Ministries Case' because most of the 21 defendants were charged with criminal conduct arising principally out of their functions as officials of the Reich government. Papers comprise a partial transcript of the case proceedings.

The 'High Command Case' was officially designated United States of America vs Wilhelm von Leeb et al. The defendants held various leading command or staff positions in the German armed forces. They were charged with having committed, together with other leaders of the Third Reich, crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and with having participated in a common plan or conspiracy to commit crimes against peace. Papers include the trial judgement, 27- 28 Oct 1948; confidential memo of incriminating evidence based on an analysis of documentation, referring to Brauchitsch, Runstedt, Manstein and Strauss; typescript annotated draft analysis of the role of the SS; annotated draft section of the indictment dealing with allegations against Raeder, head of the German navy from 1928-1943 and part of a document containing chapters on the Commando Order, the Commissar Order and Walter Warlimont.

Typescript report into conditions at Westerbork concentration camp entitled 'Kollektive Arbeit einer Widerstandsgruppe'; also correspondence between members of Wiener Library staff and Professor David Cohen regarding the reliability of the report as a historical document, including a short paper on the subject, 1944-1959.

Copy letter from Josef Weisz in Loosdrecht, Netherlands to his family, 1945, in which he describes his experiences as an inmate in Westerbork and Bergen Belsen concentration camps; copy statement made by Josef Weisz regarding his experiences as a victim of Nazi persecution, Amsterdam; copy part statement made by Josef Weisz regarding conditions in Bergen Belsen.

Report by August Grüber on conditions in Dachau concentration camp, 1936, giving a classification of prisoners in the camp also including mention of cabaret evenings replete with reference to jokes about conditions.

Papers of the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad (JCRA) and the Jewish Relief Unit (JRU) including volume of original signed minutes of the JCRA; reports from individual JRU members covering a wide variety of JRU activities in various countries and 6 bundles of apparently original lists of Mauthausen Concentration Camp inmates.

Collection of typescript poems of Grete Salus, written whilst in the camps of Terezin, Auschwitz and Oederan.

Papers of Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief, 1945-1948, comprise reports and memoranda documenting, in part, the challenges encountered by receiving such a large group of refugees with all their attendant problems. Included are some pamphlets and brochures regarding the CBF activities with children from concentration camps.
