Born, London, 1943; worked at Ealing School of Art, 1962-1963; taught at Chelsea School of Art, 1960s; editor and publisher of Control Magazine, 1965-2002; Director, The Centre for Behavioural Art, London, 1972-1973; D.A.A.D. Fellowship, West Berlin, 1979-1980; Convenor of the Symposium, 'Art Creating Society', Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1990; solo and group exhibitions, 1964-2000, in the UK and Europe. Publications include: Art and social function. three projects (Latimer New Dimensions, London, 1976).

Papers of Stephen Willats, 1960s-1998, comprising documentation relating mainly to his West London Social Resource Project in the Greenford, Hanwell and Osterley area, [1972], including questionnaires, re-modeling books and manuals for Greenford, Hanwell and Osterley, black and white photographs of the areas, audio tape of statement and interviews with project operators, examples of returns from re-modeling books and manuals, participants' sheets, public decision sheets, map of project area, exhibition display mounts; papers relating to his Edinburgh Social Model Construction Project, 1973, including project operators' manuals, problem sheets for project areas, participant project file; advertising posters, photographs; exhibition catalogues, 1968-1998, for exhibitions of Willats' work in the UK, Europe and Toronto.

The material is filed chronologically. The photographs and exhibition display material are unsorted.

By written application to the Site Librarian, Manresa Road, London, SW3 6LS. Researchers from the London Institute may visit by appointment.

Photocopying is permitted, although copying of fragile material is at the discretion of the librarian.
