There is a reference to a guild of pattenmakers in 1469. A patten was a type of undershoe which was fastened underneath a shoe with a leather strap. A charter was first granted to the company in 1670, and in 1717 it was granted a livery. The trade died out in the 19th century following the paving of streets.

The archives have been deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since 1949. The Manuscripts Section merged with London Metropolitan Archives in 2008.
Records of the Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers, 1669-1981. The records include registers of freedom admissions from 1674; apprentice bindings from 1673; charters; ordinances; Court minute books; lists of Masters, Wardens, Assistants and Liverymen; quarterage books; financial accounts; letter books; and brief history of the Company.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.
To assist the user, the catalogue has been arranged in sections representing sub-groups each with an archival classification code as follows: CLC/L/PC/A Constitutional records; CLC/L/PC/B Court records; CLC/L/PC/C Membership records; CLC/L/PC/D Financial records; CLC/L/PC/F Clerk's records.
These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information are subject to access restrictions under the UK Data Protection Act, 1998.
