Frances Yates was born in Hampshire, 1899 and studied at the University of London, receiving her MA in 1926. She spent 15 years as a private scholar before becoming successively Editor of Publications (1941-1944), Lecturer (1944-1957) and Reader (1956-1967) at the Warburg Institute. After her retirement she was an Honorary Fellow of the Institute until her death in 1981. Her wide research interests included Shakespeare, Renaissance thought, and many other aspects of European literature and culture. She was created OBE in 1972 and DBE in 1977.

Personal and working papers of Dame Frances Amelia Yates, historian, 1899-1981, including diaries, family documents, notes, working papers, lectures, articles, books, reviews, correspondence and photographs. Topics covered include: Influence of Italy and Italian on English Life, Humanism; Academies; Hermetic Tradition; Occult Philosophy; Neoplatonism; Enlightenment; Shakespeare, Ramon Llull; Giordano Bruno and Art of Memory.

Archive material is accessible for the purpose of private study and personal research and within the supervised environment and restrictions of the Archive reading room. Access is with permission from the Institute Director and by prior appointment only. Potential users are advised to browse the Institute website and contact the Archivist, Dr des Claudia Wedepohl, before planning a visit. Access to individual items in the Warburg Institute Archives may be restricted under the Data Protection Act or the Freedom of Information Act.
