Black succeeded William Cullen as Professor of Medicine and Chemistry at Edinburgh University in 1776. His last lecture was given in 1797.

Lectures on chemistry: three sets of holograph notes of Joseph Black's lectures taken by students at Edinburgh University. Students taking the notes include the future Sir Charles Blagden (1748-1820) (MSS.1219-1227). Produced in Edinburgh.

Arranged in sections as follows: Lectures on chemistry: notes by Charles Blagden, 1766-1767; Lectures on chemistry, 1776 and Lectures on chemistry: notes by Robert Perceval, 1777-1778.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.
