Records of the Spitalfields Great Synagogue, 1714-1922. The collection consists of deeds which trace the ownership and tenancies of the former synagogue from 1714 to the early twentieth century.

Records of Kent and Sons, solicitors, 1831-1923, including solicitor's diaries; financial records; day books; ledgers; letter books; clerk's records; returns of property; accounts of building materials; labour account book; estate records and attendance book.

These records include information relating to parish poor relief in Hampton.

Hampton Court Gas Company records, 1850-1892, including the deed of settlement, contracts and specifications, bills and receipts, lists of share-holders and share certificates, title deeds to property, correspondence and the seal of the company.

Records of Woodbridge and Sons, solicitors, 1281-1960, including:

*Official records, with papers of the Uxbridge Poor Law Union, Rural Sanitary Authority and Rural District Council, and of the Uxbridge Petty Sessions (members of the firm being clerks to these bodies) and also of the Harlington Tithe Commissioners, whose clerk was William Mercer, a solicitor with no apparent connection with the Woodbridge firm;

*Charity records, comprising account books, minutes, letter books, deeds and papers of the Lords in Trust of the Manor and borough of Uxbridge, later known as the Uxbridge United Charities;

• Administrative records of the firm including account books, salaries books and partnership agreements; and

• Practice papers, which themselves fall into several groups, namely, deeds of property of which the firm became mortgagee, Woodbridge family deeds and private papers, and clients' papers, by far the largest section. A large number of probates, letters of administration and unproved wills were preserved by the firm as a separate class. The rest of the clients' papers are preserved in separate personal or family groups (covering in many cases two or three generations); since many of the documents are title deeds, these bundles have been arranged according to the parish in which their property lay, although where a family owned property in more than one parish, the whole group has been listed under the parish in which the clients resided. An index of places is provided. Original bundling has been preserved although this has sometimes interfered with the logical arrangment. Where necessary for clarification, family trees have been included; although as accurate as possible these do not claim to be comprehensive.

Records of the Dutch Church at Austin Friars, City of London, including registers of baptisms, marriages and burials; financial accounts; letter books; lists of members; council and committee minute books; memoranda books; legal papers; property records including title deeds; rules and regulations relating to the governance of the church.

The records of the Scots Church before 1856 comprise constitutional documents, registers and records of the congregation, financial material, letterbooks and administrative papers, and deeds. Also papers of Dr Robert Young (1801-1813).

Records of the English Reformed Church, Hamburg, comprising registers (and related papers) of baptisms, marriages and burials. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff.

Records of the Hamburg Lutheran Church, including letters patent granting the right to establish the church; registers of baptisms, confirmations, marriages and burials; consistorial act books; papers relating to the construction of the new church in Dalston; and financial accounts.

Note that many loose papers, relating to every aspect of the Company's business, and dating from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, were gathered together, sorted and placed in 277 boxes and a further ca.430 bundles by the Company in ca.1925-30. Most of these boxes, and all surviving bundles, were deposited in the Manuscripts Section in 1996, and their arrangement has been retained with minimal alteration as Mss 34100-1. For schedules of these papers see Ms 34102. Readers should therefore be alert to the possibility that papers on any particular subject of interest to them may be contained within these two series, but obscured because the online catalogue does not include the detailed list contained in Ms 34102, though cross-references from the rest of the catalogue have been provided where possible.

Written permission from the Clerk of the Company is required for access to post-1965 material deposited in the Manuscripts Section, and for a few items of an earlier date which remain confidential.

  • Tunbridge Wells Middle School for Boys, later Skinners' School for Boys, Tunbridge Wells: The records comprise minutes, accounts and registers of boys, 1887-1949, only.
  • The Middle School for Girls at Stamford Hill, North London, later known as Skinners' School for Girls: The records comprise minutes, accounts and a register of girls, 1917-28.

  As well as education, the archive includes records of other charitable activity by the company, and of several named charities ie Lawrence Atwell's Charity, Hunt's Charity, John Meredith's Charity and Sir Thomas Smythe's Charity. The Charity Commissioners' reports (1819-40) held in the Printed Books Section contain background information about these charities.

  Skinners' Company almshouses: The records of these almshouses comprise regulations, ca. 1800-9 (Ms 30818); plans [1700?] and 1864 (Ms 30961 and Ms 30995), and schedule of plaques, undated (Ms 31313). Further references may be found in other Skinners' Company records such as minutes and accounts.

  The archive also includes extensive records of the Skinners' estates, not only in the City of London, but also particularly in Clerkenwell (Clarke's Close estate) and St Pancras (Sandhill's estate) in London, to a lesser extent in Kent and Surrey, and in Londonderry in Ireland.

Records of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, including registers of freedom admission from 1600-1921 (incomplete), and of apprentice bindings 1655-1867; charters; bye-laws and ordinances; Court and Committee minute books; quarterage books; financial accounts; letter books; deeds and other papers relating to property; and papers relating to charity.

They also include records of the Weavers' Company almshouses, which include quarterly lists of pensioners, minutes, papers relating to the receipt of rents, and financial records. Records of the Cannon Brewery Company Limited, 1787-1991. This collection contains corporate, accounts and staff and premises records. Corporate records include minutes of Board meetings and Directors' meetings. It also includes the minutes book of Pelican Caterers Limited, the meetings of which were held at the Cannon Brewery. Staff and accounts records include a salaries ledger and a volume of annual returns. Premises records include documents relating to brewery premises and individual public houses with title deeds and plans, tenancy agreements and documents relating to the transfer of properties with Ind Coope Limited after Cannon Brewery was acquired.

Records of Alperton Bottling Company Limited, 1949-1961. This collection contains records relating to corporate functions, premises, accounts and miscellaneous items, including minutes of Directors' meetings and Shareholders' meetings, file relating to the proposed erection of an extension to the bottling plant and an album of photographs of the opening of the bottling plant in 1951.
