The Community Nursing Needs Assessment Project was undertaken in response to the NHS and Community Care Act 1990. The project dealt principally with the ability of health visitors and district nurses to meet the new legislative requirements when addressing the needs of their patients and to suggest modifications to nursing education based on the findings. The project was sponsored by the English National Board for Nursing and based at King's College London, conducted by the Department of Nursing Studies and led by Professor Sarah Cowley, Lecturer in Health Visiting. Other researchers on the project included Ann Bergen, lecturer, Kate Young, lecturer and Ann Kavanagh, research associate. The project consisted of three phases: phase one involved a series of eight focus groups made up of consumers (members of local support groups, carers and those with disabilities) , practitioners (district nurses and health visitors), managers (purchasers and providers) and educationalists (community practice teachers and lecturers). Phase two involved observing recently qualified district nurses and health workers with patients and clients and following up with an interview with the district nurse or health worker on needs assessment. Phase three involved discussing the findings and preliminary proposals with an expert panel made up from the various interest groups. The project ran from Mar 1994 to Jan 1996. The full project title is `An investigation into the changing educational needs of community nurses with regard to needs assessment and quality of care in the context of the NHS and Community Care Act 1990'.

The records were transferred to King's College London Archives by the project leader Professor Sarah Cowley, Department of Nursing Studies, King's College London, 2005.

Papers, data and secondary materials of the Community Nursing Needs Assessment Project, 1980-1995, assessing the ability of health visitors and district nurses to meet the legislative requirements of the NHS and Community Care Act 1990 when assessing the needs of their patients. Including applications and correspondence relating to the acquisition of ethical approval from various local health authorities; research proposal; papers relating to the focus groups, including briefing papers for focus groups and a steering group, transcripts from focus groups 3 and 4, field notes from focus group 5 and audio tapes of all groups; papers relating to the interviews including consent forms, list of interview questions, papers relating to the recruitment of volunteers and audiotapes and transcripts of interviews with volunteers; papers relating to the recruitment of the expert panel; copies of articles from journals, magazines and other publications used for secondary research for the project.

Arranged in sections as follows: proposal and ethical approval, administration and data from phase one, administration and data from phase two, administration from phase three and secondary materials.

Records relating to individuals are subject to the Data Protection Act, and are closed for 80 years from the last date in the file. They may be consulted by Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery staff with permission from the Head of Department. Access may be granted to researchers in certain circumstances, and upon signature of a special undertaking, providing such research if for purely statistical purposes and published data is anonymised such as to prevent the identification of individuals.

Copies, subject to the condition of the original, can be supplied to Departmental staff. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Director of Archive Services, King's College London.
