Anthony Crosland was educated at Highgate School and Trinity College, Oxford. He graduated in PPE in 1946, following war service in Italy, and was a lecturer and fellow of Trinity College from 1947-1950. He was Labour MP for South Gloucester 1950-1955 and for Grimsby 1959-1977. He was Minister of State for Economic Affairs 1964-1965, Secretary of State for Education and Science 1965-1967, for Local Government and Regional Planning 1969-1970, and for the Environment 1974-1976, and Foreign Secretary 1976-1977. He was also secretary of the Independent Commission into the Co-operative Movement, 1956-1958, and a member of the Consumer's Council, 1958-1963. He married Susan Catling in 1964.

A deposit of scrapbooks, press cuttings, photographs, war medals and correspondence, c1920-c1980 was received on 10 July 1998 (Accession Number: M 1889); A file on the International Monetary Fund, 1976-1987, was received on 22 November 1999 (Accession Number: M 2000).

This collection encompasses all the main phases of Crosland's career; his education and early career, World War II, his time as a Member of Parliament. It includes personal and professional correspondence, diaries, notes and notebooks, publications, speeches, broadcasts, photographs, and ephemera (including opera, theatre and concert programmes) and comprises the following:
Part I. Education and Early Career, 1930-1950
Section 1) Highgate School (exercise books and certificates); Section 2) Trinity College, Oxford (essays and notes, material relating to student societies, and ephemera); Section 3) War (including diaries, correspondence and notebooks).

There are two later accessions of scrapbooks, press cuttings, photographs, war medals and correspondence, c1920-c1980, and a file on the International Monetary Fund, 1976-1987.

The collection has been divided into four major parts (Education and Early Career; Member of Parliament; Correspondence; Various) and 18 sub-sections as given in scope and content. The correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by correspondent.

Open, with the exception of (scrapbooks, press cuttings, photographs, war medals and correspondence relating to Crosland's career, c1920-c1980), which is closed.
