História biográfica

The Diocese in Europe was established in 1980 with the amalgamation of the Diocese of Gibraltar and the Bishop of London's Jurisdiction of North and Central Europe. The new Diocese, officially called the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, is known as the Diocese in Europe. In October 1970, on the appointment of John Satterthwaite, the office of Bishop of Gibraltar was combined with that of the Bishop of Fulham, the suffragan responsible for North and Central Europe.

From 1970 to 1980 the jurisdictions of Gibraltar and North and Central Europe remained separate, although administered by the same Bishop of "Fulham and Gibraltar" and the records relating to this period have been catalogued as part of the records of the Diocese in Europe. Also series (such as confirmation registers, Ms32690/1-6) which begin before 1970 but continue beyond 1970 have been catalogued as primarily Diocese in Europe records.

The records of the Diocese in Europe [G.L. Mss 20983 and 32647-723] were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates in the 1980s and catalogued by Guildhall Library staff over a number of years. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Records of the Church of England Diocese in Europe. The records mainly relate to the administration of the Diocese, the oversight of chaplaincies and relations both with other organisations working within the Diocese and with other churches on the Continent. The bishop established a Bishop's Council to act as an advisory body for the Diocese.

It should be noted that many of the files are general and contain information on a variety of topics e.g. administration, finance and chaplaincy. This is especially true of the large series of correspondence between the diocesan administration and the chaplaincies, Ms32699/1-624.

There is a 30 year closure period on the Diocese in Europe material except Mss 32667/1-12, 32687 and 32688/1-12 which have a 50 year closure period and Ms 32699/1-624 which are closed for 75 years.

As the archive is large and complex, and to assist the user, the catalogue has been arranged in sections each with an archival classification code as follows:
CLC/318/DGEA Establishment and extent of the Diocese;
CLC/318/DGEBA Administration. Bishop's registers;
CLC/318/DGEBB Administration. Minutes and organisation;
CLC/318/DGEBC Administration. Correspondence;
CLC/318/DGEBD Administration. Staff;
CLC/318/DGEBE Administration. Finance;
