Papers of Jean Nicholas Marjolin and his son René Marjolin, 1849-1894, including notes of Jean Nicolas Marjolin's lectures, by a medical student; letters from René Marjolin to his friend Edmond Dascols relating mainly to personal affairs, and the health of the Dascols family (with advice on cholera and other maladies) and letters from Paris at the time of the siege and the Commune, 1870-1871, when René Marjolin was active in treating the wounded prior to his arrest as a Bonapartist agent.

Lecture notes and other papers of Sir Hermann Gollancz including notes from lectures on the philosophy of mind, given by George Croom Robertson (1842-1892) at University College, London; notes from lectures at University College, London, comprising lectures on applied mathematics by William Kingdom Clifford (1845-1879), and on physics by George Carey Foster. Also included are notes on the history of the Jews in Sicily; notes on aspects of Jewish religion and theology. Signature inside the front cover, 'H Gollancz, Jews' College' and medical prescriptions written for Sir Hermann Gollancz, and miscellaneous medical ephemera.

Papers of Charles, Joseph and Jean Sédillot, medics, 1790-1875.

Recipe and account book with ownership inscription of Thomas Brigstocke Humphreys, Portmadoc, 1859. The book has later been used to accommodate newspaper cuttings (including several relating to members of the Humphreys and Brigstocke families, among them H. Humphreys of Aberystwyth, also a chemist, and various Humphreys in Llanelli) and ephemera. The latter relate to a wide variety of chemists' firms, chiefly in London; these include Corbyn and Co. (see MSS. 5435-5460).

Carbon copies of Martha Marquardt's transcripts of Paul Ehrlich's copybooks, 1898-1915, made by her during the early 1950s. There are 6 series, representing both copies of letters sent by him, and notebooks. There are not complete sets of transcripts for all of these: in some cases the originals themselves appear to no longer exist. Users should be aware that, according to a letter from Dr E A Underwood, Director of the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, to Gunther Schwerin, 25 Mar 1963 (WA/HMM/CO/Eau/13), there are some misreadings by Marquardt of scientific terms in the originals, as, although she was capable of deciphering Ehrlich's writing, she was not herself a scientist. The originals are now in Boxes 4-22, 27-27A, 28-28A, 29-36 in the Paul Ehrlich Collection at the Rockefeller Archives Centre, and another set of transcripts in Boxes 80-86 there.

Papers of William Edward Van Heyningen, 1947-1978, including laboratory notebooks (bacterial toxins, dysentery, tetanus), 1947-1961; correspondence on cholera, 1967-1978, and tetanus, 1956-1974; miscellaneous reports and publications (mainly cholera).

Papers of Sir William Drummond Macdonald Paton, 1930-1993, chiefly comprising papers relating to his main research interests, namely underwater physiology, histamine, synaptic transmission, drug dependence, anaesthetic mechanisms, allergy electron microscopy and the history of science, particularly medical science. The collection also includes correspondence, research papers and laboratory notebooks, and papers relating to the committee work that occupied his energies. Papers from Paton's time as both a Rhodes Trustee and a Wellcome Trustee provide further evidence of the extent of his commitments in committee.

Papers relating to Paton's Chairmanship of the Research Defence Committee (1972-77) are particularly extensive and reveal the social and political pressures of the period, the passionate challenges of the anti-vivisection lobby, as well as Paton's personal commitment to a socially responsible use of animals in scientific experimentation. Papers relating to Man and Mouse: Animals in Medical Research (1984), in which Paton set out his fundamental position on animal experimentation, provide further material on this topic.

Another field of interest in which Paton expended considerable energy was that of drug dependence, particularly the pharmacological action of cannabis. Through work in laboratory and committees, and through the media and many speaking engagements, he campaigned strenuously to warn of what he judged to be the deleterious effects of cannabis, and forged campaign alliances with American colleagues who shared his concerns.

Throughout his career, Paton maintained strong links with the Royal Navy, acting as scientific adviser and consultant on deep diving and underwater physiology. This strand of his work was of enduring interest: Paton's work on the physiological properties of gases at high pressure led directly to the development of the deep-diving breathing mixture known as 'Tri-Mix', in which nitrogen is added to helium and oxygen. Paton took great pleasure in the Royal Navy achieving, in 1980, the world's deepest dive (see D/2/14).

Sargant was an outspoken supporter and practitioner of what he termed the 'practical rather than philosophical approaches' to the treatment of mental illness, pioneering and publicising various physical treatments and vociferously opposing the use of psychoanalytic techniques. The majority of the collection consists of his writings, both published and unpublished, supplemented by a small quantity of correspondence and other material. In addition, the collection contains clinical records for about 500 cases from Sutton Emergency Hospital in the 1940s. As well as covering clinical subjects (in Sections D, E, and F) and Sargant's views on the practice of psychiatry in general (Section B), the collection also contains material relating to his interest in the related issues of religious conversion and brainwashing (Section G).

Papers on a development by Henri Spahlinger of a controversial vaccine treatment for tuberculosis, 1909-1929, and press-cuttings relating to public reaction to his claims 1932-1939.

Society of Apothecaries of London: Prizemen in Botany and in Materia Medica and Pharmaceutical Chemistry collection, 1830-1894, comprises records relating to the two prizes offered to male medical students by the Society of Apothecaries and include various registers detailing entrants and prizewinners, press notices, the Clerk Robert Brotherson Upton's letter to the Royal College of Physicians regarding Willam Wyon's design for the Galen Medal and his letter to Joseph Hooker at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew requesting his assistance in editing a press notice and Hooker's reply, 1862, prizewinners' bookplates (blank) and copies of examination papers, 1893 and 1894.

Widdows Golding collection comprising a commonplace book containing records of cases at the London Hospital about the year 1786, including notes on operations performed by Richard Grindall, Henry Thompson, George Neale, and other surgeons; notes on surgery, midwifery and anatomy. (The anatomical notes are illustrated by fine water-colour drawings). 'A concise account of an epidemic fever which was in the united parishes of Newnam, Mongwell, Nufhill and Gray's in the year 1788' and notes on medicine. At the end is a large collection of receipts.

Papers of Reginald Hale-White chiefly relating to the Fellowship for Freedom in Medicine, including correspondence; address at the Tunbridge Wells meeting of the Fellowship for Freedom in Medicine, Apr 1953; typescript drafts of reports; press-releases and printed Bulletins of the Fellowship for Freedom in Medicine, 1948-1972 (some were added to the collection by Hale-White's widow after his death). Also comprises material about his other medical interests including correspondence and other papers about the Government proposal to ban the manufacture and import of heroin in the United Kingdom, and about Hale-White's participation in opposing the ban, 1955-1956; copies of letters from Hale-White to the Daily Telegraph and the British Medical Journal, 1958-1967 and typescripts of speeches and lectures given by Hale-White, some annotated by him in manuscript.

Papers of Ronald Francis Woolmer, 1942-1964, comprising personal items, 1962; press cuttings, c1962; lectures, 1958-1962; publications by Woolmer, 1942-1964; Bernard Price Memorial Lecture, 1962-1964; notes and photographs, 1950s-1960s; and other publications, 1960-1962.

Extensive papers of Howard Walter Florey, Baron Florey, relating to almost every aspect of his career in science and public life. The scientific materials include a complete run of laboratory notebooks, 1924-1968, files on the work for which Florey is best known, penicillin and antibiotics, 1940-1962, together with papers, research notes and photographs on mucus secretion, traumatic shock and electron microscopy. Florey's writings are preserved in the form of drafts and proofs of published items, together with relevant correspondence. His correspondence indicates the depth of his involvement in the affairs of particular organisations, notably the Oxford University School of Pathology and the Royal Society. The work of Ethel Florey (née Hayter) and Margaret Augusta Florey (née Fremantle) is also present.

Papers, 1780s-1790s, largely of Captain Francis Light, including several hundred Malay letters, primarily letters received by Light and his business partner, Captain James Scott, from rulers and dignitaries of the Malay Sultanates.

The letters cover the history of relations, negotiations and conflicts between Light, the rulers of Kedah and the Governor General in Bengal leading up to and including the settlement of Penang in 1786 and the armed conflict of 1791. There are also letters dealing with business affairs between Light and Malay nobles such as the purchase, shipment and sale of commodities, ammunition, slaves and opium, and the maintenance of good political and economic neighbourly relations; letters from the Sultanate of Selangor; letters from royal merchants at the Malay courts; and letters concerning trade from various rulers and nobles in the Peninsula and Sumatra, especially from Aceh, Asahan and other North-Sumatran states.

In addition, the collection contains several dozen letters and documents from the same period relating to Bencoolen (Benkulen) and the West Sumatran Presidency, which are unrelated to Light.

Records of Smith Kendon Limited, 1826-1987. The collection mainly comprises the papers of Donald Smith and his capacity as Managing Director and Chairman of Smith Kendon Limited, including papers relating to the formation of the business such as articles of partnership and certificates of registration; deeds and other legal documents relating to property owned by the company; insurance policies; inventories; correspondence; minutes of meetings; Donald Smith's business diaries; sales figures; financial accounts; papers relating to stock and stock control; papers relating to sales; papers relating to products including recipe books; advertising; reports; staff records and papers relating to the Second World War.

Prescription books from 16 Jun 1745-25 Dec 1747 and 12 Nov1768-30 Nov 1769. The second volume contains entries for medicines prescribed for the Duke of Wellington, who was born at Mornington House, 24 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin on April 29, 1769. On the outside of the upper cover is a slip dated 17/8/1899, which states that the original earliest entry in the volume for 30 April 1769 has been cut out and framed for display in the shop at 49 Dawson Street, Dublin: another dated July 2 has also been cut out and 'given to Fielding Ould [?] Esqre' (i.e. Sir Fielding Ould, Dublin obstetrician, 1710-89). This manuscript still contains entries for the Countess of Mornington 2 May; 'Lord Mornington's young child', 4 May; 'The Countess of Mornington, the young child' 16 May; 'Lady Mornington, Master Frank Wesley, Young son', 25 May; 'The Hon. Master Arthur Wesley', 17 June. This last entry is also found for 2 July, 3 July, 6 July. According to the notice in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Wellington used the form 'Wesley' for his name until 1798. Produced in Dublin.

Personal papers and correspondence of John Coakley Lettsom, 1766-1812, including medical papers and pamphlets by Lettsom, newspaper cuttings relating to him, or subjects that interested him. Letters from various correspondents, mainly from the medical profession. The papers reflect his primary interests in 'Quacks and Quackery', clinical medicine, pathology, materia medica, variolation and vaccination. Many relate to the business of the Medical Society of London, of which Lettsom was President. There is also a fragment of an autobiography of his life as a as a student, MS.3245.

These papers comprise the manuscript collection of F[rederick] Bacon Frank (1827-1911). They include a medieval medical miscellany (MS.550), material by or relating to the 17th century Yorkshire physician Nathaniel Johnston (MSS.3083-3086 and 6080), and some Bacon family administrative documents (MS.6079). One item relating to Nathaniel Johnston that did not form part of the Bacon Frank collection has been catalogued with it for convenience (MS.3086).

Papers of William Gelder including letters from Gelder to his parents in Wakefield, while a dispensing and visiting assistant to [R Lucie] Reed, surgeon, at Whitechapel Road, London, Mar-Nov 1832, and while in Edinburgh in the employ of Mr Cope, a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist and druggist, Mar-Aug 1834. Notebook begun by Gelder in Edinburgh in 1834, and continued on a tour through Lancashire, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Wales in 1835, and in trade in Yorkshire, 1836-1837. Containing verses, commonplaces, orders for medicines and other goods, and miscellaneous notes. Signature inside front cover, 'William Gelder, Apothecaries' Hall, Edinbro, 1834.' On the rear end-papers is a coloured engraving of Apothecaries Hall.

Papers of Ann Gwendolen Dally and Peter John Dally, 1953-1991 including patient and other records of their joint private practice, plus Dr Ann Dally's correspondence with General Medical Council and writings relating to drug addiction.

Papers connected with James Randal Hutchinson and William Henry Bradley's work in the Ministry of Health, 1890-1959 with some retrospective material, and small groups of papers of Sir Weldon Dalrymple-Champneys (on Brucellosis) and Dr J Allison Glover.

Bad trip to Edgewood consists of, interview transcripts, research files and videos for a television documentary on US Army testing of chemical and biological warfare agents on human 'guinea pigs' between 1955 - 1975, and includes files of mainly photocopied documents, reports, scientific articles, letters and newspapers articles, with some printed brochures, as well as videotapes. There is also a video copy of Bad trip to Edgewood which was produced by Michael Bilton, Yorkshire Television, and broadcast as a First Tuesday film in March 1993.

The files focus on secret projects carried out by the US Army Chemical Corps at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Edgewood, Maryland USA, between 1955-1975, in which US Army volunteers were used to test the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), benzilates such as BZ (3-quinuclidinyl benzilate, also known a QNB) and glycolates.

The testing programs were suspended in 1975 when information about them became public. A number of volunteers claimed to have suffered long term mental health effects from the tests. They also claim they were not informed at the time of immediate or long term effects of the agents tested. In 1977 US Army notified 686 volunteers who has been tested with LSD and conducted a follow up study of their health. The LSD follow-up study report released in 1980 found 'the majority of subjects evaluated did not appear to have sustained any significant damage from their participation in the LSD experiments'.

There are notes and transcripts of interviews conducted with former US Army personnel who were volunteers in the research programmes, individuals involved in the running testing programs, medical experts and lawyers.

Several files relate to particular law suits including that of Sgt James B Stanley, US Army, volunteer at Edgewood during 1958. In 1977 he was informed by the army that he had been given LSD as part of the testing program. In 1987 a controversial judgement by the US Supreme Court found against Stanley, effectually granting immunity from liability for money damages for all federal officials who intentionally violate the constitutional rights of those serving in the military.

Other notable cases frequently mentioned in the files include that of Frank Olson and Harold Blauer. Dr Frank R Olson, US Army scientist at Fort Detrick, apparently suicided, on 28 November 1953. In 1975 the Commission on CIA Activities within the United States (the Rockefeller Commission) revealed Olson had been given LSD without his knowledge while attending a meeting of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) personnel eight days before his death. A civilian, Harold R Blauer died on 8 Jan 1953 after being given a lethal injection of Experimental Agent 1298 supplied by the US Army Chemical Corps to the New York State Psychiatric Institute where he was a patient. A 1975 Senate investigation revealed the facts of his death. Files also contain material on bacteriological testing by the Army and the CIA carried out in Washington DC, Florida, San Francisco, and New York. Particular reference is made to the case of Edward Nevin, a civilian, who died on 1 Nov 1950 in San Francisco as a result of a rare bacterial infection Serratia Marcescens, which coincided with a significant and unexplained outbreak of this infection between Oct 1950 and Feb 1951. In 1976 it was revealed that the US Army had conducted bacteriological warfare experiments with Serratia Marcescens over San Francisco Bay during September 1950.

There is a small amount of material relating to the role of American Citizens for Honesty in Government, a Church of Scientology sponsored organisation who campaigned during 1979 for a full investigation of the testing and storage of BZ and compensation for volunteers suffering long term effects from testing of the substance, and to chemical testing carried out in the UK at Porton Down, Wiltshire, UK and production of chemical agents at Nancekuke Base, Cornwall, and Anglo American cooperation in this area.

Records of Fulham Road Pharmacy, Chelsea, including prescription books, 1887-1989, controlled drugs and poisons books, 1939-1978 and loose prescriptions 1953-1980.

Papers of Herbert Davies Chalke, 1924-[1980] including lecture notes, papers and publications, including re alcoholism, TB, care of the elderly, and food safety. Also papers re service with RAMC in North Africa.

Harrods Pharmacy Department registers of prescriptions dispensed daily, Jul 1935-Jan 1977. There are gaps in the sequence between July 1936 and September 1938 and between December 1943 and April 1946, where the relevant registers were found to be missing on transfer to the Wellcome Archive.

Reports and correspondence relating to the development of the drug Balsalazide, for treatment of people suffering from ulcerative colitis, 1979-1991.

Papers of the Burroughs Wellcome and Co arm of the British Insulin Manufacturers (BIM) including correspondence, marketing, production and research of insulin. Most of the papers date from 1938-1953. Also including British Insulin Manufacturers committee minutes.

The archive spans Browne's career from school onwards, but the core series of records focus on his work as a medical missionary at the BMS hospital in Yakusu, Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). Section B comprises records for the period 1938-1958, including registers of leprosy sufferers, case records and photograph albums documenting various symptoms. Section K contains further photographs (mainly clinical) for the period 1938-1977, the most important series of which dates from Browne's time at the Baptist Mission Hospital and comprises over 900 negatives and prints together with supporting documentation, 1954-1958.

Section C contains a small number of files compiled by Browne during his research into leprosy, yaws, onchocerciasis and ainhum, 1946-1983. Particularly notable are the files on the anti-leprosy drug B663 (now known as clofazimine), into the use of which Browne conducted pioneering studies whilst director of the Leprosy Research Unit, Uzuakoli, Eastern Nigeria, 1959-1966.The remaining records comprise personal and biographical material, 1923-1985 (section A); general subject files containing correspondence, reprints etc. on a wide variety of topics, 1948-1986 (section D); writings by Browne, 1935-1985 (section E); records of Browne's involvement with the International Leprosy Association, 1909-1985 (section F) and various other organisations, 1959-1986 (section G); records on foreign visits, 1965-1985 (section H); and a few files on religious matters, 1959-1984 (section J).

Letter from Mordaunt Martin of 'Burnham' to Dr [John Coakley] Lettsom, Sambrook House, London, 8 Mar 1801. Stating that he has despatched to Lettsom a parcel of mangelwurzel seeds. Explaining that he was prevented from answering Lettsom's letter of 3 Jan by an attack of gallstones, since relieved by pills of soap and rhubarb. Discussing the 'Brown Bread Act' [probably 41 Geo.3.c.16] to which, he says, Lettsom was in some degree accessory; quoting Lettsom and Horne Tooke on the Act; Martin prefers brown bread for his breakfast, using his own wheat 'sifted in the coarsest hair sieve', but deprecates the 'indiscriminate use of it'. Attacking at length the Potato Premium Bill, which had just been rejected, according to 'the paper of this night'; claiming that such a bill would force by premiums an unnatural produce on land which the occupiers could use for more profitable crops. Adding that his and Lettsom's 'hearts will beat in unison' on reading pages 109-110 of the 2nd edition of [Robert] Fellowes's Christian Philosophy [1799].
