2. Letter from Comte Origeon(?), written from Paris, 4 Mar 1789, unaddressed.
3. Letter from Jean Marie Cécile Valentin-Duplantier (1758-1814), Préfet of the Landes, to the Director of the École Polytechnique [of Mont-de-Marsan?], acknowledging receipt of information about examinations, and written from Mont-de-Marsan, 28 Aug 1802.

Papers relating to Rhodesian politics collected by Anthony L McAdam, 1964-1972, including correspondence and papers relating to the multiracial University College Rhodesia, 1964-1971; correspondence and papers relating to African National Congress (ANC) meetings, particularly relating to the ANC Committee in London, 1971-1972; miscellaneous material on Rhodesia, 1970-1972, including correspondence on the right of entry to the United Kingdom for Rhodesian africans.

This collection covers both the public and the private aspects of Violet Markham. The documents relating to her public works cover her involvement in the National Relief Fund, the Central Committee on Women's Employment, the Women's Section of the National Service Department, the Unemployment and Assistance Board, the Trade Board for the Cutlery Industry, and the Voluntary Social Services Enquiry, along with material on the issue of domestic service. Records of the John Roan School, Greenwich, and predecessors. This collection contains Roan Estate deeds for property in Greenwich (1473-1955); Governors' minutes, Head Teachers' reports and Clerk and Surveyor correspondence files (1682-1995); Roan Schools administrative records (1866-2002), pupils admissions and discharge registers (1705-1994), various printed material including school magazines (1834-1999), a large collection of photographs depicting pupils and teaching staff (1895-1990), and commemorative trowel, school badges and items of clothing (1876-1979); and school log books (1884-1976) for various schools operating in Charlton.

Records of particular interest are the Roan Estate deeds (LMA/4442/01/01) which are an excellent resource for the research of family and local history of Greenwich from the 15th to the 20th centuries and the admission and discharge registers (LMA/4442/03/02) provide a fairly comprehensive set of details of pupils who attended the Roan Schools. The calendars and prize giving programmes (LMA/4442/03/03) are also useful for researching pupils at the school and the school magazines, prospectuses (LMA/4442/03/03) and head teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01) provide detailed information on school activities, events and other developments.

The school represents a good example of the use of increases in charitable gifts and funds in Greenwich from the 17th century and details can be found in the surviving records of the first school, the Grey Coat School, in the Orders of the Feoffees (1682-1716) (LMA/4442/02/01/01/001) and the Register of admissions and discharges (1705-1736) (LMA/4442/03/02/01/001) which includes churchwardens' charity payments to Greenwich poor widows.

The impact of the Second World War on the Roan Schools is documented by a number of records in the collection including the Governors' Clerk and Surveyor's correspondence files which give detailed descriptions of bomb damage in Greenwich.

Information on the school's planning for the evacuation can be found in the Governors' Clerk's files (LMA/4442/02/02) and some lists of pupils evacuated and accounts of the evacuation to Kent and South Wales for four years can be found in reports in the Roan Schools records (LMA/4442/03/01 and LMA/4442/03/03) and Governors' minutes and Head Teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01).

Copies of papers documenting discrimination against Jewish educational institutions and professionals during the Nazi era, 1933-1967. The subject matter ranges from dismissal on racial grounds of Jewish academics from 1933, through the separation of aryan and non-aryan instruction, c1938, to the closure of Jewish schools, 1941-1942. A substantial part of the material relates to institutions in Cologne and Frankfurt am Main. The letters are as follows:

1. Letter to Greaves from Eduard Benes, President of the Czech Republic, 16 Nov 1942. 'I have received and read with much interest your letter of 10th November in which you furnish me with particulars of your Provisional Committee for creating a United Nations University Institute in London. I note that amongst those with whom you are in touch is Dr. Slavik, our Minister of Education, as well as Dr. Ripka and Dr. Císar;. These gentlemen will, I am sure, let you have their views on the project from the Czechoslovak point of view.We have also in England a Czechoslovak Association of University Teachers, who will certainly be most interested in the idea. For myself, as a former Professor of Sociology, I naturally welcome any effort to promote understanding between university teachers of different nationalities. At the present epoch especially such association is of outstanding importance'.
2. Letter to Greaves from John Gilbert Winant, United States Ambassador, 16 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of November 12th telling me about the suggestion for the establishment in London of an International University Institute. I was interested in this and would like to attend the meeting to be held at the British Academy on Monday November 23rd. Unfortunately I have a previous engagement at that time and am sorry I cannot be with you. I would appreciate, however, your keeping me informed concerning any plans which may be decided upon in this matter and I am gratified for your courtesy in writing [to] me'.
3. Letter to Greaves from (George) Gilbert (Aimé) Murray, 17 Nov 1942. 'I am afraid I cannot come to the meeting at the British Academy on November 23rd, and I am still not quite clear in my mind about the purpose of the International University Institute. Of course I can see that there is great danger that all over the world intellectual values will be thrust aside and the whole intellectual side of life undervalued and neglected. This is partly the deliberate influence of both Nazism and Communism. If the International Institute is to be concerned with the preservation of these intellectual values, I can see important work for it'.
4. Letter to greaves from Richard Austen Butler, Board of Education, 8 Nov 1942. 'Thank you for your letter of 12th November...I should like to keep in touch with progress with this scheme but I shall be unable to attend meetings personally. I am, however, asking my Public Relations Officer, Mr. D.H. Leadbetter, to attend the meeting next Monday...'.
5. Letter to Greaves from Joseph Bech, Luxembourg Minister for Foreign Affairs, 18 Nov 1942. 'I am entirely in agreement with this scheme which I consider would be of immense value in helping to solve the problems of reconstruction which will arise in the near future and I am grateful to you for having invited me to take part in the launching of such an Institute. I, therefore, accept with much pleasure, your kind invitation to be present at the meeting on Monday, 23rd November, at the British Academy...'
