Biographical history
William Emery (1798-1867) was a lighterman who became master of the Feltmakers' Company in 1848. His son William (1825-1910) was ordained as a priest in 1853, having been encouraged in religion by his father. In 1864 Emery was appointed archdeacon of Ely, and in 1868 was made a minor canon there. He died at Ely in December 1910.

Emery , William , 1798-1867 , Master of the Feltmakers' Company
William Emery (1798-1867) was a lighterman who became master of the Feltmakers' Company in 1848. His son William (1825-1910) was ordained as a priest in 1853, having been encouraged in religion by his father. In 1864 Emery was appointed archdeacon of Ely, and in 1868 was made a minor canon there. He died at Ely in December 1910.
These papers were given to Guildhall Library by a descendant in 1985. They were catalogued in the same year by a member of Guildhall Library staff. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
Papers mainly concerning William Emery senior, Master of the Feltmakers' Company, including copy portrait, baptismal certificate, sermons written by him, and probate copies of his and his wife's wills, 1810-67. Also papers relating to William Emery junior, Church of England clergyman, including letters to him, with some transcriptions and certificates relating to his professional qualifications and appointments, 1847-70.
