John Baker Holroyd was born in 1735. In 1781 he was created Baron Sheffield of Dunamare, Co. Meath in the Peerage of Ireland and in 1802 created Baron Sheffield of Sheffield, Co. York in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was President of the Board of Agriculture, a Lord of Trade and one of His Majesty's most honourable Privy Council. He was known in the literary world as a writer on political economy. He died in 1821.

The British Library, London, holds correspondence and papers, 1750-1819 (Add MSS 34883-5, 34887); correspondence with Lord Auckland, 1781-1814 (Ref: Add MSS 34419-60, 457289); letters to the Earls of Chichester, 1795-1803 (Ref: Add MSS 33093-130 passim); letters to Edward Gibbon, 1790-1794 (Ref: Add MS 34886); correspondence with the Earls of Liverpool, 1779-1801 and 1818-1820 (Ref: Add MSS 38217-311 passim); and letters to Arthur Young, 1771-1820 (Add MSS 35126-33 passim). East Sussex Record Office, Lewes, contains documents, 1770-1863 (Ref: SP), and a rent book, 1854-1868 (Ref: A 5762) relating to the Sheffield Park Estate; correspondence and papers, [1760-1821]; and letters received by Holroyd, 1774-1820 (Ref: AMS 5440). The West Yorkshire Archives Service, Leeds, holds material relating to the Temple Hirst Estate, 1402-20th century (Ref: TM). Doncaster Archives Department has rentals, leases and correspondence relating to the Temple Hirst Estate, 1849-1882 (Ref: DX Box/62020). The National Army Museum holds Holroyd's papers as a troop commander, 1761-1821. Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies Service has correspondence and miscellaneous papers, 1763-1821 (Ref: DSA 13-33). Coventry Archives contain correspondence concerning elections in Coventry, 1780-1784 (Ref: Acc 854). The East Kent Archives Centre, Dover, holds correspondence and notebooks, 1797-1811 (Ref: U471/A112, C134). The William L Clements Library, University of Michigan, has letters received by Holroyd, 1801-1819 (Ref: Sheffield Papers).Beinecke Library, Yale University, contains letters from Sir Joseph Banks, 1788-1819. The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University, holds letters to William Hayley, 1794-1795. The National Archives, Kew, has letters to William Pitt (Ref: PRO30/8).
