Papers of Leon Freeman of Finchley Road 1937-1938. Album of press cuttings regarding the candidacy of Leon Freedman, Labour’s candidate for Dudley. Charting the period from when he made his first public appearance 'in the borough' as the new Labour candidate in June of 1937 to his 'attack on ''Jelly Fish Government''' and his 'biting similes' in reply to 'Premier’s Birmingham Speech' [Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain], taking part in 'Labour’s Peace Crusade' in the years leading up to the Second World War, with reported speeches against 'Britain [as] an arms profiteers' paradise' and criticising Government policy. A headline from 20 May 1939 reads, 'Challenging Speech at Netherton Labour Bazaar: Prospective Candidate Attacks Budget, Declares Conscription Unnecessary'. Several letters to the editor of the Dudley Herald. In June of 1940 Freedman resigned his candidature, citing 'his reason being that he is now unable to devote any attention to the borough. Mr Freedman, who is a barrister and has secured an appointment under the War Office, was a military representative in the northern district of the West Riding of Yorkshire in the last war'. In a manuscript letter marked 'Copy' written by Freedman to a Mr Connolly, Freedman states that '… my withdrawal of my Candidature at Dudley, was the only proper thing to do. It may have the result of eventually brining them to some sort of unity and a more common sense attitude towards the real situation … a house divided against itself, makes both the positions almost impossible'. Most clippings from the Dudley Herald, Birmingham Express and Star, but also Essex and Thurrock Gazette and Grays and Tilbury Gazette. The final item details legal proceedings of a case for slander that seems to have nothing to do with Leon Freedman, dated April 1945, [22pp] [June 1937- April 1945].

Ephemera collected from the anti-EDL protest in the East End of London, Saturday 3rd September 2011. The archive consists of two parts.

Part 1 consists of records collated during Billington-Grieg's membership of a large number of international women's organisations, associated correspondence, drafts of papers presented at conferences, as well as publications received from the organisations. In addition there are papers related to her unpublished biography of Charlotte Despard.

Billington Grieg was a keen suffrage historian, and her historical writings on suffrage (as well as papers reflecting her own suffrage activism) are represented in her archive.

Subjects covered include: women's suffrage, post-suffrage campaign period, status of women, equal pay, women workers, women's education, war and peace, sex and prostitution, international women's activism.

Formats include: correspondence, drafts and notes of speeches and articles, photographs and printed material (press cuttings, newspapers, leaflets, pamphlets, journals and books).

Letter form Henry Peter Brougham of York to T Hodgkin, Esq, of 5 Brunswick Terrace, Pentonville, [London], 5 Aug 1830. Written on the eve of Brougham's election as one of the four MPs for Yorkshire: 'I have not the least shadow of a claim to sit for this immense county except my principles and my known devotion to them.' Refers to the July Revolution in France: 'Never was such a death blow dealt to tyranny and priestcraft, never such a severe lesson inflicted on our own infatuated rulers ...'. The archive consists of letters from Charlotte Despard to Charles Wilson (1920-1932) ; photograph of Mrs Wilson (c. 1920); and a diary of a trip to the USSR (1930).

The letters cover the periods 1920-1922 and 1930-1932, and were written to Mr Charles Wilson of Willington, County Durham, Mr Wilson was a political activist who worked with the Durham miners, and Mrs Despard lectured to his students in 1921 and 1930. In the letters Mrs Despard refers to Mr Wilson's poetry; she also sent him a poem that she had written. She refers to her own political activities, in Ireland, lecturing for the Labour Party against British Policy in India. She also mentions several of the illnesses that were beginning to restrict severely such activities.

French revolutionary pamphlets collection comprises pamphlets by the Interior Ministry, the Police Ministry and other official bodies in the French republic. Pamphlet by the Chief of Police Sotin warns citizens that the enemies of the revolution are regrouping (c1794). A pamphlet of 1795 also urges vigilance.

Letter from William Hazlitt of 8 Alfred Place, [London] to Basil Montagu, Esq, 1 Sep 1838. 'I enclose the prospectus [missing] ... I did not ask you for the MSS. on Criminal Law, and on the Emancipation of the Jews ...'. Postscript: 'Mrs. Shelley's letter is dated from 4 Lower Belgrave St. They know her address always at Hookham's Library, 15 Bond St.' The third page contains a list of his father's (William Hazlitt the elder's) works.

Manuscript family diary of Joseph William Corfield (c 1810-1888), including contributions from his children, especially Emma Ann(a) Corfield (1835-1910). Contains entries on radical constitutional politics, Chartism, current affairs, the anti-slavery movement and women's suffrage, alongside revealing vignettes of family, business and social life. Also includes short diary written by wife Elizabeth Anna Corfield (nee Preston) consisting of notes on family news, visits, holidays and presents (1845-1860).

The archive was transferred to The Women's Library by two members of the group, both active in the late 1960s to mid 1970s. As a result, survival of records is not uniform and reflects their interests, rather than being representative of MIA as a whole. Some non-MIA material was also present: this has been catalogued as 5MIA/13.

The archive consists of correspondence, campaigning material, photographs, posters, postcards and badges. It mainly relates to the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, but also covers international peace campaigns. It includes the manuscript of a book on the menopause.

Letter from Sarah Smith of 17 The Grove, Clapham Common to Mr Pattison, 16 Apr [1886]. Thanking him for his offer of help. 'We like our new house very much, especially the quiet of its surroundings, as we have gardens and fields before us, and the Common within three minutes' walk ... These are very stirring times. I cannot see how Home Rule can be refused to Ireland by any real Liberal; the people have spoken so plainly. I never was a Gladstonite, but you know I am thoroughly a Radical, even a Republican; and I am often sorry that Cromwell's scheme of United States of Europe had not been founded by him ... We have drafted a bill for the Protection of Children ... The last time I was at the Shelter we had ten children in it ... I have no doubt the Society [for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children] is doing good; and I hope it will do more. We now have a night officer, who patrols the streets; but what is one man in London!'

Letter from James Stephen, Master in Chancery's Office, London to James Cropper Esq of Liverpool, 7 Nov 1825. 'I have just recd. a letter from our friend [?Zachary] Macaulay informing me of an intended publication of the Liverpool anti-slavery society of which he supposes a copy has been also sent to me. I have not received it, but from what he says of its contents, am afraid of losing a post in saying to you that I earnestly request its publication may be at least suspended, till we can submit to the consideration of your Society the remarks we have to make on it ...' [no such tract was published by the Liverpool Society of the Abolition of Slavery around this time, perhaps due to Stephen's letter]. Discussing current aspects of the problem of emancipation and concludes that direct legislation by parliament is 'the only means by which anything good for the slaves can or will ever be effected. My hopes I lament to say of any early adoption of such means are very faint indeed, but it is nevertheless our duty to call for them ...'.

Letter from Josiah Tucker of Gloucester to Dr [William] Heberden, 11 Nov 1775. Asking Heberden's brother to call on 'Cadell in ye Strand' [i.e. Thomas Cadell the elder, publisher] to enquire about the fate and non-appearance of 800 copies of Tucker's Address and Appeal to ye Landed Interest [discussing possible independence for the American colonies], sent with a presentation list, ten days before. 'I pressed Cadell to be as expeditious as he co[ul]d, in order that the pamphlet might be published at least some days before Mr Burke was to make his famous motion ... The cold, or whatever is ye name of this new disorder, so rife at London, now begins to spread at Glocester [sic]: but I think, at present, it chiefly attacks young people. Another epidemic disorder, Electioneering, has attacked all ranks universally; and spares neither age, nor sex. What is most remarkable in this case is, that many of those, who were formerly notorious Jacobites, are now fierce Republicans: so that, form maintaining, that one Family has an indefeasible right to ye Throne, on ye extinction of that Family, we are to have no Throne at all'. Letter from James Yates of Lauderdale House, Highgate, London to Samuel [A Thompson Yates], [1861-1871]. Mentioning 5s 6d paid to Mr Sackett for 'the engraving of Baskerville ... A person named Matthews in Birmingham has published a new edition of the view of the houses at Birmingham, which were destroyed at the Riots [of 1791 against Joseph Priestley and other non-conformists]. One of these is a view of Baskerville House. It [the house] was purchased and enlarged by Mr John Ryland, and in that state was destroyed by the mob ...'
