Papers of David N Deacon, 1998-1999, comprise detailed, semi-structured interviews with representatives from selected extra-governmental agencies (including both 'recognised' and 'non-recognised' quangos) regarding media and publicity issues, and with national and local news professionals regarding their use of quangos as news sources and their relationship with these executive agencies. All the interviews were made between 1998 and 1999. With a file containing interview schedules and 4 floppy disks.

The papers comprise personal correspondence between G Elton Mayo and his wife, Dorothea and his daughters, Patricia and Gael, 1913-1947. Dorothea Mayo expected her husband to write to her daily whenever he was away and the result is a series of diary style letters sent during their periods of separation. The fullest series are for 1922-1923 when Mayo visited the USA prior to settling in Philadelphia and for the period from 1929 to 1937 when Dorothea remained in England with their daughters.
The second series of correspondence comprises letters to his daughters while they continued their education at Bedales in England and during World War Two. The correspondence is mainly with his eldest daughter, Patricia, though there is some correspondence with Gael and also Patricia's first husband, Walter Goetz.
Both series of letters contain detail on Mayo's work and life at Harvard, including meetings with colleagues, lectures and research projects. In addition there is discussion of books, ideas and people which influenced his work and thinking. The World War Two letters include comments on the war from the USA and detail events leading to Gael's escape from behind German lines in France with her son and first husband.

Papers of Sir Andrew McFadyean, c1891-1974], notably material concerning the Dawes Plan and other reparation negotiations of the 1920s, his connection with the Liberal Party; correspondence from his work at the Treasury (1910-1920), extensive personal and business correspondence; papers relating to rubber production and regulation and his work in North Borneo and draft trasncripts of his autobiography 'Recollected in Tranquility'.

Papers relating to Lord Merlyn-Rees' political career, 1949-2002, concerning his role as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Among the papers are: transcripts of Merlyn Rees' taped diary, 1972-1976. These are a very useful insight into Rees' contemporary views on politics and events in Northern Ireland. Included are accounts of: the Ulster Workers' Strike; the collapse of the power sharing executive; the Constitutional Convention; meetings with politicians; parliamentary proceedings; and, security matters such as internment and special category status for paramilitary prisoners. Biographical material of Edward Dene Morel, including diaries and photographs; papers and correspondence concerning Morel's parliamentary candidature and activities as an MP, his publications, the Congo Reform Association and its publications, trials and atrocities in the Congo, the Union of Democratic Control, and research into the origins of World War One and armaments after the war; general correspondence; books of outgoing letters concerned mainly with the Congo Reform Association and the publication of the 'African Mail'; material relating to the newspapers with which Morel was involved, including the 'West African Mail', the 'African Mail', and 'West Africa'; books, pamphlets and articles by Morel and others on Africa, the Congo, and World War One; British and Belgian parliamentary reports and discussions concerning the Congo; and family correspondence.

Taped interviews and transcripts of interviews with figures involved in the Munich Agreement of 1938, made in preparation for the making of a 90-minute documentary, Munich 1938, produced by Brian Lapping Associates Ltd. The collection also contains production notes and correspondence with the interviewees over their involvement in the programme. The main issues covered by the interviews are the politics surrounding the actual signing of the agreement and the British policy of appeasement, ethnic relations between Czech and German Citizens in the Sudetenland and the nature of Nazi Germany's foreign policy after 1933.

The collection of primarily bound volumes comprises the business documents of Robert Newman and Co., and related companies, 1774-1955. The documents themselves include letter books, journals, ledgers, account books, memorandums and ship registers, and relate chiefly to trading in Newfoundland, Canada. Many of these internal working documents were originally intended to serve as permanent records. They can provide the researcher with a general overview of the financial and statistical history of the firm, giving a record of transactions as they occurred. In addition, they offer a degree of descriptive information, showing the development of codes and ciphers used by the firm, an insight into labour relations, and a detailing of the raw materials used for trade.

The majority of these papers relate to Prest's time as a committee member of the Royal Commission on Civil Liability and Compensation for Personal Injury. There are also documents relating to his collected writings, his time as editor of the "Three Banks Review", his time as a member of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission, and miscellaneous correspondence.

This collection covers Read's fieldwork among the Ngoni of Malawi, 1935-1939, her work on education and nutrition in India 1958-1960, her teaching, and her published works.

The collection of the politician Neville Sandelson, 1923-1996, includes a series of scrapbooks of press cuttings covering Sandelson's period as an MP, files relating to the Hayes and Harlington constituency, and papers on the Labour Party and the SDP. Sandelson took a keen interest in foreign affairs, and there are files on the Middle East, Afghanistan, Gibraltar and Northern Ireland. There is also an extensive collection of photographs documenting his political life.

Papers relating to Lord Shinwell's time as a backbench MP and peer; correspondence; publications by and collected by Shinwell; family papers; and photographs. Unfortunately, no papers survive to document Lord Shinwell's early trade union and Labour Party career and relatively few survive from his period in office in the 1945 Labour government.

Kenneth Young acted as research director and adviser to the Committee (6 boxes). Also includes papers relating to the 1947 Local Government Boundary Commission, 1945-1954, including minutes of meetings, memoranda, statements submitted to the Commision, correspondence, statements of reasons and public relations bulletins. The papers were given to Kenneth Young by 2nd Baron Silsoe, son of the chairman of the Commission, Malcolm Trustram Eve (1 box).

The majority of this collection consists of correspondence between Vyvyan Adams other politicians, his constituents and letters regarding his candidacy. The collection is divided into eight sections: Section 1: Correspondence, 1924-1951; Section 2: Miscellaneous papers, 1895-1941; Section 3: Articles and transcripts, 1912-1944; Section 4: Speeches, 1933-1939; Section 5: Pamphlets and printed materials, 1914-1953; Section 6: Capital punishment, 1929-1949; Section 7: Press cuttings, 1933-1950; Section 8: Coronation souvenirs, 1937. The political correspondence and the ordered files correspondence reflects his opposition to appeasment policies and the general themes of the time. Pamphlets and printed material cover international issues. The capital punishment file contains miscellaneous material relating to capital punishment. Press cuttings relate to political affairs. Coronation souvenirs contain miscellaneous items relating to the 1936 coronation of Edward VIII.

Records of Franklin and Deacon, architects and surveyors, 1922-1938, consisting of correspondence, tenders, estimates, specifications, plans and photographs of building work carried out at various public houses and other properties in Harrow Weald, East Sheen, Wembley, Regent's Park and Edgware.

The records of this collection fall into two related groups: the records of three Huguenot families who came to England between 1685 and 1690 (ACC/2079/A-C); and the records of several successive firms of solicitors in which one of the descendants of those Huguenot families, P A Hanrott, worked (ACC/2079/D-F).

The collection is of interest for the study of Huguenot families, and contains a good deal of genealogical information (see for example the Gascherie family tree in AC/2079/A/1/24). Papers of the Gascherie and Chesneau families are arranged in four groups. The first group is the largest and consists of documents relating to a legal action brought by Madeleine Gashry on behalf of her mother Suzanne Gascherie, widow of Francois Gashry (see ACC/2079/B1), in La Rochelle to reclaim lands inherited by more distant relations on the death of her sister, Suzanne Gashry (Gascherie) in November 1762. The case required extensive proof of family relationships and copies of baptism, marriage and burial register entries were produced, as well as wills and marriage contracts and other legal documents relating to the lands in question (ACC/2079/A1/003-036). The case was conducted by agents in La Rochelle as Madeleine Gashry and her mother were in Amsterdam and The Hague at the time (ACC/2079/A1/001-002). Although these records partly relate to the Gashry family, they chiefly refer to lands held by Estienne Gascherie, Suzanne Chesneau, his wife and the inherited title of their daughter, Suzanne Gascherie, widow of Francois Gashry. Other records of the Gashry family are listed in section B.

The second group consists of other papers of Estienne and Suzanne Gascherie, including receipts for soldiers billetted on them in La Rochelle in 1685 (ACC/2079/A2/001) and a bond concerning a ship which may have been used to bring Estienne Gascherie to England (ACC/2079/A2/002).

The third group represents the papers of Brigadier Paul de la Gascherie, son of Estienne and Suzanne Gascherie, whose invention concerning sails and keels of ships won him a pension from the Estates General of the Netherlands (ACC/2079/A3/001). He worked all over Europe fitting his invention to ships of various fleets. He went to Moscow and Poland (ACC/2079/A3/016-025) and was in Portugal at the time of the Lisbon earthquake (ACC/2079/A3/008).

The fourth group of papers relates to the Chesneau family, principally the parents of Estienne Gascherie's wife, Suzanne Chesneau. They were French Protestants, and it would seem that Suzanne's father was imprisoned (if not even sentenced to death) during anti-protestant feeling in 1656 (ACC/2079/A4/001). This may explain the context of the exhortation written by Suzanne's mother to both her children, encouraging them to stand firm in the Protestant faith (ACC/2079/A4/003).

The records of the Archbishop of York's estates are interesting for a study of development of the Battersea and Wandsworth areas. The arrangement of the documents reflects these four aspects of their work. ACC/2079/F1 consists of general documents relating to the sale of the Battersea estates, the original deeds, precedents for the Archbishop's tenure of the estates, schedules of deeds and leases, and correspondence relating to more than one property. ACC/2079/F2 consists of documents relating to the Battersea and Wandsworth estates arranged alphabetically by tenant, as the holdings are not described fully enough to arrange them topographically. ACC/2079/F3 refers to the purchase of estates in Bishopthorpe and ACC/2079/F4 to the purchase of Lord Petre's house in Grosvenor Square.

There are also several items in the collection which do not appear to have any connection with the families or the solicitors' firms (ACC/2079/G). P A Hanrott collected a large library, and it is possible that these records were also collected by him.
