This collection consists predominantly of correspondence. This includes letters to Sir Colville Barclay's parents, and letters relating to embassy life and events that occurred during Sir Colville Barclay's various postings. There are also official reports and papers, including Foreign Office confidential circulars concerning peace negotiations, 1918; draft speeches; press releases; notes of condolence collected at the British Embassy in Paris on the death of Queen Victoria; newspaper cuttings; Swedish periodicals; French satirical magazines; and memorabilia, including photographs of official visits from Sweden, Bulgaria and Hungary; magazines and newspapers containing features on King Edward VII's visit to Paris, May 1903; photographs and ephemera relating to Barclay's career in the diplomatic service, particularly his time in Washington, USA.

Collection of title deeds relating to ownership of property in Earl's Court Road, Somerset Place, Bath Place and Edwards Square, Kensington. Documents include leases, assignments, mortgages, abstract of title and releases.

The collection includes Robert Hammond's record of service and his survey, when Master of the Society of Pilots of the Cinque Ports, of the southern North Sea in the cutter GEM, 1841. The volumes collected by Barker himself consist mainly of logs of naval ships. They include that of the ORION, in home waters, kept by an Edward Barker in 1794, containing an account of the Battle of First of June; the Clyde, 1796 to 1800, kept by Lieutenant John Smith (fl 1780-1805), in home waters; of the CHALLENGER, 1828 to 1831, East Indies Station, kept by Commander John M R Ince (fl 1808-1850); the CALEDONIA, 1835 to 1836, Mediterranean station; the FLY, 1842 to 1846, surveying Australian waters, and the PILOT, 1850, East Indies station. There is also a journal of a voyage in the merchant ship VESTAL from North America to the West Indies, 1759 to 1760, by the author William Falconer (1744-1824); some of Falconer 's unpublished poems appear at the end of this journal.

Drafts, research notes and correspondence relating to various aspects of the career and life of Professor Theodore Barker, [1950-2000]; including correspondence and papers regarding the glass manufacturing industry, most notably the companies Pilkington and Triplex, airports and research material relating to various aspects of transport history, including correspondence with the Transport History Research Trust. Also includes research material concerning St Helen's, Liverpool, used by Barker in preparation for his PhD thesis and later publication on the area. Plans submitted to the London Borough of Barnet and predecessor local authorities in Finchley, Friern Barnet and Hendon, 1879-1986. The plans show examples of a diverse range of architectural styles in domestic housing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are also many shops, factories and workshops, as well as public buildings such as schools, cinemas and churches, many of which still exist today.

The files are interesting for the insight they give to the planning process, showing what was and was not acceptable from a design and structural point of view. And as many of the earlier plans are for the most part hand drawn and coloured, they can be very decorative.

Personal papers of Canon Samuel Augustus Barnett, social reformer. The papers comprise correspondence, sermons and lecture notes, and miscellanea. The bulk of the correspondence consists of weekly letters from the Canon to his brother, Francis G. Barnett and, after the latter's death, to his widow and her daughter and sons. For the years before 1883 there are no letters at all, and before 1889 there are fewer than for the later years of the correspondence. Normally the Canon wrote every Saturday, but there are frequent periods when there was no correspondence, when the Canon was in residence at Bristol during the summers of 1893-1906, and when the two families were holidaying together. There are also large groups of letters written by the Canon to his mother and family in the form of travel journals during his trips to Egypt in 1879-1880 and round the world in 1890-1891.

There are very few in-letters. The letters to F G Barnett are almost always four octavo pages in length. They were bundled in one or two year periods by Dame Henrietta when preparing her biography of her husband. On several letters there are editorial instructions, deletions and emendations by Dame Henrietta. These were made in pencil and were, at some subsequent period, erased. Within each bundle Dame Henrietta also numbered the letters. Her numbering has not been indicated in the list, nor has it been followed, as several of the letters were in fact misplaced.

There is a series of bound sermon notebooks and miscellaneous lecture notes amongst these papers. Although the sermon notes are basically complete for the St. Jude's period, 1875-1888, the lecture notes are only a fraction of the Canon's output.

Some miscellaneous documents and in-letters were kept by the Canon for their intrinsic importance, e.g. formal documents relating to his benefice at St. Jude's, and these have survived. There are, in addition, miscellaneous photographs, mostly of the Canon, but also of his wife and of his family.

These papers will be of interest to historians for the information they give on Canon Barnett's life, and for the frequent and lengthy discussions of the political, social and intellectual life of the day. They are enhanced in value by the fact that Dame Henrietta was avowedly unable to do them more than scant justice in her life of the Canon (see Canon Barnett: his life, work and friends vol I, p.377), and that the records of Toynbee Hall have been decimated by war damage and destruction.

Papers of Dame Henrietta Octavia Weston Barnett, 1930, comprise a letter to Mrs [?Helena] Normanton. Discussing the speech Mrs Normanton was to make at the annual meeting of the State Children's Association on 12 November 1930.

These records comprise Dame Henrietta Barnett's Autobiographical Memoirs together with autograph letters and other papers in manuscript and typescript by Henrietta and her friend and literary agent Marion Paterson. Most of the records concern travel to the USA, Japan, India and Italy.

This collection consists of 186 letters sent to or written by Samuel and Henrietta Barnett. The correspondence is from public figures, including authors, poets, artists and other social reformers.

Records of the Barton family relating to the manors of Ealing and Hampton Court, including property transactions, bankruptcy papers, family papers and court minute books (view of frankpledge and court baron).

Records of John Barton relating to the trust of Thomas Woodrouffe Smith. Apart from property in Essex, Surrey, Norfolk and the City of London, T. W. Smith was the owner and lord of the Manor of Teddington, and the bulk of the material in this deposit relates to that manor, including a series of court rolls. Throughout the Middle Ages the manor was the property of Westminster Abbey, being granted to Henry VIII in exchange for other lands in 1536, who then made it part of the Honour of Hampton Court. In 1603 it was granted to John Hill {1246/019} and its subsequent ownership can be seen from the deeds in this deposit {1246/019-082}. Between 1802 and 1863 John Barton's trustees sold the manor and demesne lands off in parcels, which heralded the beginning of Teddington's urbanisation. This and a previous deposit of manor court books {see ACC/0363} came from the solicitors who had acted for the trustees in the 1860's.

Papers of Dr William Barton, 1960s-1970s, contain Barton's collection of reel to reel audio tapes and reflect his professional interest in the work of Professor George MacDonald. Tapes notably include recordings of lectures made by MacDonald on subjects including yellow fever, malaria and health services, 1960s; broadcast series of lectures 'The Road to Hell', featuring Barton speaking on bilharzia and schistomiasis, 1960s, and an interview with a Mrs Barton on Girl Guides, in the Government Information Studio in St Vincents, 1970s.
