Mowat Collection (of Professor Charles Loch Mowat, 1911-c1969), comprising 2500 photographs in albums of railway scenes, 1926-1969 (mostly 1942-1969, with a few before 1924). These are mostly of small and medium sized railway stations (trains are generally incidental), covering most of the United Kingdom, with particular emphasis on the GWR and Wales, with coverage of Somerset and Dorset, Midland and South Western Junction, Lincolnshire, Midland Railway in the West Country, Great Eastern, Glasgow and Edinburgh Suburban, Bristol Suburban, Ireland, and narrow gauge lines in the UK such as Ffestiniog, Penrhyn, Bishop's Castle and Ditton's Prior. He also covered south east of Manchester in 1962, including the Hayfield, Macclesfield, Buxton (London North Western and Midland) and North Staffordshire lines. This volume is one of a set of seven that records the damage caused by the Independent Force’s bombing raids during 1918 and the enemy counter-measures that were encountered. This volume records attacks and their affect on blast furnaces in iron and steel works situated at Burbach, Maizieres, Karlshutte, Hagendingen, Rombach, Dillingen and Volklingen. Many of the photographs show bomb damage caused by specific raids and many of the site plans are marked to show where bombs exploded. A statistical appendix records loss of production ascribed to the air raids.

The archives comprise of the administrative records of the College and its predecessor bodies from 1841. The archive also includes personal and asylum records donated by former prominent Members and Fellows of the College, and some printed material in the form of booklets containing histories of mental hospitals, reports of Commissioners in Lunacy, reports on London County Asylums and Parliamentary Papers on Mental Health. Specifically, the records include:

Foundation Papers: Papers of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane (the first predecessor body of the College); Circulars received by Dr Jones of Chester announcing the preliminary meeting of the Association, with minutes of the preliminary, first and second meetings, 1841 and 1842. Announcements of Association meetings in the 1850s and 1860s; report of the Special Committee to consider the Government's Bills for the Amendment of the Laws relating to the Care and Treatment of the Insane, 1859.

Minutes and related papers: on the foundation of the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane, 1841 and minutes of meetings, 1841-54, excluding 1845, 1846, 1848, 1849 and 1853 when there were no meetings. Annual meeting minutes have been abstracted onto a Meetings Database. The database can be accessed from the College Library online catalogue. There are no manuscript minutes after 1854 as the Journal of Mental Science was started in that year and the minutes printed in the journal became the official record. Financial information contained in the minutes was also considered the official record and there are no separate financial papers.

Administrative papers, correspondence and circulars: of The Medico-Psychological Association 1870s-[1920], including a few papers on nursing and other examinations, asylum officers superannuation, insanity as grounds for divorce, letters of congratulation, meeting programmes and abstracts, dinner invitations, and menus.

Council minutes, 1887-November 1971: with a few supporting papers, e.g. agenda. An acting sub-committee (also referred to as the managing committee) was appointed at the 1856 annual meeting and there are references to council meetings in the 1860s but no minutes before 1887 have been found. There are some omissions after 1887, especially in the early years but it is not clear if this was because there was no meeting or because no minutes were taken. Council minutes 1887-1971 have been abstracted onto the Meetings Database.

Mental Nursing Papers

The Nursing Certificates: The Certificate of Proficiency in Mental Nursing was founded at the Medico-Psychological Association Annual Meeting in 1890 and until 1921 was the only recognised qualification in mental nursing. A separate certificate in Mental Deficiency Nursing was instituted in 1919 and a short-lived Occupational Therapy Certificate was introduced in 1939. After negotiations with the General Nursing Council, the examinations for these certificates were discontinued, the last being held in 1951.

Letters sent from Iris Murdoch to her friend and fellow philosopher Philippa Foot from 1942 to the 1990s. Iris Murdoch and Philippa Foot met at the University of Oxford and went on to share a flat together in London from 1943 to 1945. There followed a period of some estrangement as Philippa Foot married historian Michael (MRD) Foot, following his previous relationship with and subsequent rejection by Iris Murdoch. Their friendship was rekindled in 1959 following Philippa Foot’s divorce, and they remained friends and corresponded regularly while the latter was based in the USA. In the letters their friendship is discussed, as well as their work in philosophy and literature, and events taking place in the wider world at large.

Papers of Iris Murdoch, 1993, comprising a letter of thanks to Ana Olos for her suggestion that Murdoch write her biography but turning her down: 'Alas I have very little time left and to tell your story well would take a lot of time, I am very sorry. I have little time to write my own work'. The collection also contains a copy of Ana Olos' (Psycho)analytical approach to a case of reading therapy, Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies 4.1-2 1998.

Circa 5000 books collected by Vane Ivanovic. The strength of the library is books on 20th Century Balkan history and books on the Second World War, although there are books on a number of other subjects including the history of the Olympic Games and Spear-fishing. There are also a small number of books pre-dating 1900, going back to the 1490s. The vast majority of books are in English, although a small number are in other Western European languages or Serbo-Croat.

Papers of Peter Conradi, 1933-2001, comprise research papers compiled during his research for the authorised biography of Iris Murdoch and notably include profiles of people who knew Murdoch including Hans Gunther Adler and Elizabeth Anscombe; Peter Conradi's correspondence with individuals who knew Murdoch, including Miriam Allott and Kenneth Baker MP; notes and transcripts taken during interviews with people who knew Murdoch and audio recordings of some interviews; original manuscripts and drafts of Murdoch's work including drafts and a typescript of the final version of 'Eulogy for Borys Villers (1923-1992)' and secondary resources including photocopies of press cuttings about Iris Murdoch and reviews of her work. Papers of Iris Murdoch, c 1981-c 1995, comprising letters to Sugana Ramanathan, responding initially to Ramanathan's letter expressing interest in Murdoch's books, which later developed into a literary friendship. The letters discuss Jesuits and a Jesuit College (presumably in India) and Murdoch's interest in this, as she has had 'many highly intelligent Jesuit pupils'; describe their first meeting, and reflect on Murdoch's works including the Gifford lectures.

Small collection of books collected from Iris Murdoch's flat in London. Consists of books collected by Iris Murdoch throughout her lifetime. Many of the books in this collection were gifts given to the author, and are signed by the original author or the giver of the book. This includes her Bible given by her Grandmother in 1921. Also in the collection are first or rare editions of her own novels, notably the Booker Prize winning edition of The Sea, the Sea.

Records of Merseyside and North Wales Faculty, subsequently the Mersey faculty. [Existing faculty, 1998]. The Merseyside and North Wales Faculty was founded in 1954. From November 1987 when the North Wales subfaculty achieved full faculty status, it became the Mersey Faculty.
