Records of the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths, bell-ringing society, comprising: name books, 1747-1999 (Ms 21658, 33995); peal books, 1748-1989 (Ms 21659, 34393); minutes, 1887-1989 (Ms 33996), rules, 1931 (Ms 33997); and notebook of ringing methods, [1924-35?] (Ms 33998). They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff between 1986 and 2006.

Some of the records were microfilmed in 1985 and Mss 21658-9 are positive copy microfilms deposited in the Library on indefinite loan by the Society which has retained the master negatives. The originals of Ms 21658 and Ms 21569/1 were deposited on 21 July 2003 (USE OF MICROFILM COMPULSORY), but the Society retains the original manuscript of Ms 21659/2. Permission to take reproductions from the films or to publish extracts from the records should be sought from the Society (enquire at the information desk for contact details).

The collection comprises administrative records, including: minutes, agenda and reports for meetings of the Society's General Committee (1884-1915), trustees (1915-1990), House/Western Lodge Committee (1920-1961), Executive and Finance Committee (1915-1925) and Western Asylum Sub-Committee (1843-1848); annual reports and accounts; trust deeds for the Society's funds and property; staff agreements and contracts; secretaries' letter books and correspondence files; 19th century papers and correspondence relating to the administration of the society, premises, bequests and staff; subject files on the administration of the Society, events, finance, fundraising, premises, staff and the history of the Society; and visitor books.

Records relating to residents at Western Lodge and the Society's other Asylums, including: censuses of admission; admission papers; admission and resident registers; reports on residents; index cards; rules and regulations; and menu books.

Financial records for the Society, including: balance sheets and accounts; a ledger used to compile the accounts; notes on the accounts; ledgers; audit books; cash books; donation books; board and lodging receipt books; returns of monies received and paid by the Superintendent; and a set of accounts paid by the Finance Committee in the 1820s and 1830s.

Records of the Society for the Relief of Persons Confined for Small Debts, including minutes; extracts of proceedings; Acts of Parliament; papers concerning J C Neild; financial accounts including legacy books, income books, general expenditure books, annual accounts and auditor's reports; papers regarding the disposal of surplus funds; bequests; press cuttings; correspondence; and histories of the Society.

The minutes contain reports of visits of inspection as well as names and numbers of prisoners assisted. A number of the papers relate to the destruction of the book containing the minutes and accounts of the Society 4 Mar 1818 to 5 Apr 1826 by John Camden Neild, treasurer 1814-1827.
