Records of Messrs Cooling Lawrence & Sons, 1904-1955, comprising a volume containing material samples and details of customers' orders, with some correspondence with customers, 1928-1929, 1953-1955.

The collection is of family papers belonging to Isabella, Lady Cooper, her children and grandchildren. The papers include documents detailing Lady Cooper's inheritance and assignments of its stock to her husband and children.There is a collection of title deeds for Isleworth Estate, together with leases of various parts of it, tradesmen's vouchers, accounts and particulars of its eventual sale (1855-78). There are also some 17th century title deeds to property in Hidden, Hungerford, as well as later deeds, accounts, rentals and leases.

Among the personal papers are a group concerning the settlement made on the marriage of William Honywood, Lady Cooper's grandson, with Barbara Whyte, and a group of financial papers chiefly on the subject of loans and securities, the same is true of the papers belonging to William's sisters Elizabeth and Caroline. There are also papers dealing with a mortgage he held from Sir John Shelley on property in Maresfield and Fletching in Sussex and as an executor of his grandmother's will he was forced into lengthy proceedings against the Ware family of Cheltenham for a long outstanding mortgage debt owed to Lady Cooper.

The last group of family papers relates to Elizabeth, Lady Cooper's younger surviving daughter, who married, secondly, the Reverend Edward Henry Dawkins. It includes their marriage settlement, and a number of his financial papers. The most interesting part of the whole collection relates to the sugar plantation of Dukinfield Hall, Jamaica (1719-1877). There are title deeds for a particularly tortuous descent, yearly accounts of crops, letters from the Jamaica agents and inventories of stock, which include slaves and give their names, ages, country of origin, occupation and state of health. There is also the will of Robert Dukinfield (1755), the original owner of the plantation, which makes provision for his negre mistress and their children out of his other property. The family name has a variety of spellings, Dukinfield being the one most frequently applied to the estate, although the main branch of the family comes from Duckenfield, Chester.

There are also a few papers concerned with three plantations on the Island of Grenada, which Lady Cooper also inherited (1773-1867).

Papers of Leslie Cope-Cornford, consisting of letters, 1902 to 1927, received by Cope-Cornford from Rudyard Kipling and others, thanking him for copies of his books, discussing the politics of the day and personal matters. The correspondence with Professor Sir Geoffrey Callender (1875-1946), refers to a scheme to establish a national maritime museum and there are many letters from Callender to Mrs Cope-Cornford, 1928 to 1938. Also present are two volumes of Press Cuttings of his own work, serving as a portfolio of his journalistic career.

Copied from a note by Gabriel Harvey, in a miscellaneous volume containing the 'Medea & Thyeste of Lod.Dolce.-The Hecuba and Iphigenia of Euripedes in Latin by Erasmus.-and the first Italian and English Grammar' by Henry Grantham 1575 A copy made by S.W. Singer (ob. 1859) of some annotations by Harvey. The volume also contains a copy of a cypher used for a letter by Queen Elizabeth to Nicholas Throckmorton, diplomat, 1 July 1559; with autograph letters from T.W. Jones (1854) and J. Thompson (1818) to S.W. Singer.

The greater part of this group of thirty-one facsimiles consists of copies of letters by Lord Nelson, 1758 to 1805. Some were produced in the early nineteenth century.

The principal series include the papers of Sir William Coventry (1628?-1686), 1585 to 1680, in the possession of the Marquess of Bath; the Royal Greenwich Observatory papers, 1674 to 1892, and the Board of Longitude papers, 1714 to 1829, held by the Royal Greenwich Observatory; and papers of Admiral Sir John Duckworth (q.v.) 1793 to 1813, held by Yale University and other repositories in North America. The remaining microfilms are mostly of smaller items, some obtained in fulfilment of conditions to secure an export licence. Examples of these include copies of the journals of Augustus Keppel (q.v.) kept during Anson's circumnavigation, 1739 to 1744; of Captain Cook (1728-1779) in the ENDEAVOUR, 1768 to 1770; and of Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) kept during the same voyage, 1768 to 1771.

These include photographs of letters of Lord Nelson, 1794 to 1797; of his journal of the AGAMEMNON, 1794; two letters written by Captain Cook, 1772; and some papers of Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1813), Astronomer Royal, 1761 to 1793.

These include two early works on shipbuilding: Matthew Baker's 'Fragments of English Shipwrightry', c 1586, and Sir Anthony Deane's 'Doctrine of Naval Architecture', 1670, held in the Pepysian Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Other examples include copies of two letters written by Sir Francis Drake, ([1540]-1596) 1587 and 1589, a copy of his will, 1595, and one of his 'Pilot of the Caribbean and Azores', 1596; copies of the will of Captain Cook, made in 1776, and of fifty-six letters by or about Lord Nelson, 1780 to 1805, and the personal papers of Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1813), Astronomer Royal.

These include transcripts of documents dating from the sixteenth century: the earliest is a description of Drake's preparations for his expedition in 1585. There are also transcripts of official letters, 1718 to 1720 to Admiral Sir George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington (1663-1733), when he was in command of the British fleet in the Mediterranean; a copy of a letter describing the sinking of the GREAT BRITAIN in the St Lawrence River, 1842; and transcripts of letters from the Duke of Windsor and Prince Albert (later King George VI) to Admiral Sir Campbell Tait (1886-1946), 1913 to 1919.

(i) Describes the towing of The Mary (of which A Copland was part-owner) off the rocks at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire (6 December [1827]). (ii) Last leaf of a letter, bearing only 3 lines of writing (13 March 1828 [endorsement]). Both letters appear to be autograph but are unsigned.

(iii) Newspaper cutting advertising The Mary, a 40-ton ship 'intended to be a regular trader between Aberdeen and Peterhead'.

Papers of Alice Mary Copping, 1921-1985, relating to nutrition, comprising correspondence, research papers and publications. Correspondence notably includes letters regarding Dame Harriet Chick, including a letter from P M Victory at The British Nutrition Foundation, thanking Copping for forwarding Chick's introduction to a lecture and for Copping's participation in a lecture, 1975; a letter from Dr George Pitt of The British Journal of Nutrition thanking Copping for a photograph of Chick, enclosed with the letter, 1978; correspondence also includes letters from A N Duckham of University of Reading, 1973-1978 and Sue Papworth of ASP Biological and Medical Press B V, 1976 both regarding the publication of 'Food production and consumption: The efficiency of human food chains and nutrient cycles', which contains a chapter written by Copping.

The collection also includes published articles by Copping notably including 'Planning Nutrition Education in Developing Countries', 1968 and 'Nutrition and Growth', 1964; publications from institutions including Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine, including 'Monkey welfare' by E M Hume, 1956 and copies of Nutrition History Notes, 1979-1985 and other newsletters. The collection also includes glass slides labelled 'pantotheine', housed in envelopes addressed to Copping. Pantotheine is a derivative of pantothenic acid (vitamin E), these slides reflect Copping's interest and research in vitamins and nutrition.

The collection also contains publications regarding nutrition worldwide including dietry surveys of Indians and Fijians and a section concerning Vienna, comprising an article entitled 'Ætiology of Rickets in infants: Prophylactic and Curative Observations at the Vienna University Kinderklinik', by Harriette Chick and others, 1922 and 'Hunger- Osteomalacia in Vienna, 1920. Its relation to diet', by Elsie J Danyell and Harriette Chick, 1921 and four black and white photographs depicting undernourished children in Vienna, [1921-1922].

Letter from a woman to her children and her husband prior to her deportation to Theresienstadt (includes an English translation).

This World War Two Austrian soldier's letter, amongst other things, describes the systematic murder carried out by the Wehrmacht in Poland, and in particular the murder of civilians by the author's unit. The author also mentions the murder of a number of their own officers by the rank and file and includes an English translation.

Copies of Francis Bacon's Essays taken by John Payne Collier, literary scholar and forger, 1867-1883. Collier notes that the MS. in question was "apparently made before any of them [the Essays] were printed. they appear to vary very materially from any of the printed copies I have met with, but I never saw the first edit." 'Monsieur Babbage m'a fait passer la lettre que vous avez eu la bonté de lui écrire au sujet d'inventions de M. [Philippe] de Girard … Je prends la liberté de vous récrire a çe sujet, car cette affaire est d'une haute gravité pour notre famille … Vous dites …que le "moyens de M. de Girard sont ingénieux mais que le même effet a été produit par des moyens plus simples, et tellement analogues qu'il me serait difficile de prendre un brevet"'. Saying that if this sentence concerns 'les greniers à blé', she would like to ask certain questions: (i) whether the process analogous to that of Girard is patented in England; (ii) under what name; (iii) at what date and since when; (iv) what are the differences that make it simpler and what are the things analogous to it? Excuses her importunity on the grounds of the matter's important to the memory of her uncle.
