These are the papers of William Booth College, 1883-2012.

The training of Salvation Army Officers began in 1879, but was based in various locations and training homes, and known under varying names. It became established in Denmark Hill in 1929, and (as of 2013) is still at this location. It was known as the William Booth Memorial Training College, but as of 2000, is known as William Booth College.

This collection is the complete records of all Salvation Army training from 1879, with the first records here dated from 1883 until the present day. As training before 1929 was not centralised and under different names, it has been regarded for the purposes of this catalogue that these are still 'William Booth College' records under a different name.

Due to the original order and context of the collection not surviving, the records have been arranged in a logical structure and not one which relays the original functions/departments of the college.

The archive consists of cyclostyled lecture notes produced for the Women's Correspondence Bible Class, a flyer and some letters from Katherine Bushnell to Mrs F White. The material reflects the study of women's representation in the Bible.

Records of the Westminster Jews Free School, 1846-1950. This is a short series of records and consists of minutes and financial accounts. The minutes date from 1846 and include the first minute book of the Jewish Girls Free School (1846-1853) which contains lists of pupils and letters.

Papers of Sophia Weitzman, comprising lecture notes, mainly about the history of English education in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, drafts and some printed material about the teaching of history c1937-1960s.

Records of the United Synagogue's Head Office, including minutes, agendas, presented papers, printed annual reports and accounts, byelaws and standing orders, papers relating to property, letter books and correspondence, financial accounts, insurance papers, membership papers, records relating to staff, administrative records, photographs, press cuttings, orders of service, Aubrey Newman's files, and papers relating to Soviet Jewry. This material has been catalogued in 20 sub-fonds (ACC/2712/01 to ACC/2712/20).

Also included in this collection are records of the individual member synagogues; these comprise mainly membership records, but there are also administrative and financial records for some synagogues. Records of bodies connected with the United Synagogue to a greater or lesser extent are also included in this collection, such as the Office of the Chief Rabbi, London Beth Din and Beth Hamedrash, the Kashrut Commission and various Jewish friendly societies and charities. The United Synagogue's close links with Anglo-Jewish education are also represented in the collection, including records of individual schools such as the Jews' Free School. Records of the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues (ULPS), dealing mainly with the creation of the new version of the prayer book Service of the Heart which was published in 1995. Rabbi John Rayner edited the new edition with Rabbi Chaim Stern as co-editor. Rabbi Julia Neuberger chaired the anthology committee. As well as aiming to combine general Jewish tradition with Progressive Jewish thought the editors wished to respond to changes in Jewish outlook in the late twentieth century. The use of language, in particular gender sensitivity, was carefully examined.

Other records include minutes and correspondence of the Federation of Womens' Societies Executive Committee and papers relating to ULPS educational courses.

Papers of the Thrift family of Clapham, including confirmation card, certificate stating that Annie Thrift had passed examinations in Religious Knowledge, and parish magazine of St Peter, Clapham containing death notice of Mrs Mary Thrift.

The collection contains correspondence, mostly concerned with the activities of the British Women's Temperance Association.

The collection mainly relates to Stopes' work on Shakespeare, though there is a little general correspondence, and some notes on women's suffrage and other women's questions.

Other printed material comprises articles and sermons on Maurice's death in 1872, and items relating to a dinner held at Lincoln's Inn, 1972, for its centenary. A manuscript letter from Emily Hill to Mrs Shaen, 1872, describes Maurice's death and a manuscript letter from Charles Kingsley to Maurice's widow, 1872, thanks her for a Greek testament.
