Unaddressed fragment of a letter written by Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London, which possibly refers to the parliamentary debates on the slave trade in 1788. An extract reads 'There will undoubtedly in so very complex a business in which so many interests are involved, be a great diversity of opinion on this [illegible] other Points. But they are now submitted to the wisdom of Parliament, and most of them will I hope this Evening be settled to your entire satisfaction'.

Papers of Sir James Porter, almost entirely comprising letters to his family, 1889 to 1913, and include accounts of various battles during the South African War. Section B, Research, relates to Porter's research at Cambridge including notes, drafts and data which also includes periods at Sheffield and records the funding of his research arranged alphabetically by funding body from 1955 to 1987; also includes correspondence with suppliers from 1955 to 1979 and a miscellaneous section on the Davy Faraday Research Laboratory detailing its collaboration with the University of London and the Photochemistry Discussion Group meetings at the RI. Section C, Royal Institution, documents the Director's involvement in the administration of the RI, its organisation, funding and finance, membership, building and maintenance; it also records the organisation of events such as Discourses and Christmas Lectures at the RI for example the correspondence between the Director and Discourse lecturers arranged alphabetically, discourse invitations declined, suggested lecturers and topics, discourse statistics, discourse dinner party records and correspondence with lecturers about their Christmas Lectures; there is also material on the history of the RI, its library, archives and developments of the academic study of the history of science at the RI. Section D, Lectures, broadcasts and publications relates to Porter's role as a scientific communicator. There are drafts chronologically from 1955 to 1988 and alphabetically by folder title or topic, drafts of lectures at the RI for Schools Lectures, Discourses and Christmas Lectures, and research lectures on photochemistry; there is correspondence on BBC radio programmes, and with journals in Porter's editorial and advisory role; there are also records of his teaching at Cambridge, Sheffield and through the Open University as well as his student notes. Section E, Societies, organisations and consultancies, relates to Porter's association with eighty-one organisations. Refers to Porter's membership and leadership of various organisations particularly those of science education and popularisation aspect. The Royal Society is well represented as well as the Paul Instrument Fund. There are also commercial organisations such as the General Electric Research and Development Centre. Section F, Correspondence, consisting heavily ofMiscellaneous Correspondence Files' arranged alphabetically by correspondent and dating from Porter's time as Director of the RI. There is also correspondence of Early Scientific and Miscellaneous Correspondence form 1966 to 1987, as well as Soviet Scientists from 1970 to 1987 and Japanese Scientists from 1973 to 1985. Petition, [1720?], to the justices of the peace for the West Riding of Yorkshire on behalf of Abraham Bean, a farmer of the parish of Cantley, near Doncaster, and signed by John Fox, Vicar of Cantley, Samuel Crabtree, William Morehouse and John Leetham, parishioners. The petition 'Sheweth That your Petitioner is an honest and labourious Person And hath maintain'd himself and family (since he had one) reputably on a Small Farm in This Parish...', and appeals for further aid - the Justices had granted £10 immediate relief the previous August at Rotherham. He had lost 16 head of 'Great Cattle' in the winter, and his house had been burned down. Both he and his wife had suffered from burns, and they and their two children had been forced to enter an alms house 'and are there now barely kept from starving by the Parish'. A note is added at the foot: '29 1. as Charity to be paid by the Treasurer'.

This collection includes all records relating to the organisation of sports and social activities by members of the Polytechnic except for records of the individual clubs themselves, which are catalogued as separate collections. However it does include correspondence with the clubs by the Secretary and Committees. This collection also includes papers relating to the award of Polytechnic-wide medals and trophies, including the Elsie Hoare Trophy, Studd Trophy and Ditchman Trophy.

Records of the Polytechnic Harriers, cross country running and athletics club. The collection comprises records relating to the administration of the club as well as scrapbooks, photographs and publications. These highlight the club's achievements and also reveal the tireless work of individuals that was necessary to run such a successful club and especially annual events such as the "Poly Marathon" and "The Kinniard Trophy". In addition to this they provide an interesting insight into how athletics has developed over the last one hundred years.

Four letters from the historian Albert Frederick Pollard to Josiah Clement Wedgwood, 1st Baron Wedgwood, written between April to July 1942, concerning mainly articles on parliamentary history written by Pollard for the English Historical Review.

Papers of Alfred Pollard, 1884-1948, including contains personal correspondence from Alfred Pollard, primarily to his parents and his secretary, E. J. Davis (1884-1925, 9 boxes). There are also letters from Pollard's father, Henry, primarily to his son (1885-1924, 4 boxes). These letters give a valuable insight into the development of Alfred's historical and political opinions as well as providing an account of domestic circumstances in the Pollard family. The remainder of the papers relate to Alfred's academic and University of London activities. These papers contain correspondence and printed items, and span the length of his academic life. Key phases and activities recorded in the papers include: Alfred's achievements during his own university education; contributions to the Dictionary of National Biography; involvement with the Committee of the League of Nations, the Historical Association, the Institute of Historical Research, the University of London's Academic Council, the Anglo-American Conference of Historians, University College London, the London History School, Victoria County History, Committee of the History of Parliament; and his candidature for the London Liberal Federation for the University of London constituency. There are also boxes of lecture-notes, newspaper cuttings, scrapbooks, and pocket diaries.
