Copies of correspondence from Rosel and Selli Goldstein in Gorlice, Poland, to their former teacher, Fräulein Dr. Apt, in Dresden, later Upper Norwood, 1938-1939. The letters offer some insight into the experiences of German speaking Jewish residents of Poland in the immediate pre-war period.

The archive consists of diaries (1902, 1908); albums (1902, 1911); volumes of press cuttings (1900-1937); letter-books (1919); manuscript of article (undated). These refer to her 1902 visit to the United States of America, her 1903 Federal Senate election campaign (Australia) and her 1911 visit to England.

Papers of Richard Goodings, comprising research material, notes and drafts, mainly relating to Goodings' work on a history of the Institute. Papers of the Gordon family of Letterfourie, Banffshire, Scotland, relating to their merchant interests and financial matters, 1735-[1800], comprising, including a bond in £250 of 1735 discharged in 1751 by James Gordon and his son Patrick to John Gordon; two letters from Strauss & Schmidt, Lisbon, to James Gordon, 1763; an invoice and bill of lading, dated Oct 1770, for goods shipped on the Hambro Packet from Hamburg by order of Alexander Gordon & Co., Madeira; a letter from C. Grant, Edinburgh, to James Gordon, 7 Dec 1785; two receipts of 1799 for money paid by a Mrs. Gordon; and a letter from James and Alexander Gordon at school to their parents in Letterfourie, [1800].
The collection also contains material not apparently relating to the Gordon family: accounts of John Scott, vintner in Portsoy, 'for Letterfouries servants and horses when sundry times in Banff', 22 Dec 1798-3 Jun 1799; a 'Certificate of the term of payment of Lady Fraiser [of Durris]'s annuities, 19 Nov 1776, signed by the town clerk of Aberdeen; and a receipt of 1780 for payment for goods bought from E. Fielder, stationer, London, by a Mr. Ruddick. The connection between the Gordon items and the last two items is unknown.

Letters and papers of Charles George Gordon, known as 'Chinese Gordon' and later 'Gordon of Khartoum', with related letters by his brother, Colonel S.E. Gordon, and Captain C Orde Browne, 1856-1884.

The letters and papers document many aspects of Gordon's career, including his service in China and the Sudan. They shed light on his political views, religious faith and personal ambitions and are especially important in showing his interest in biblical history and archaeology.

The letters were largely addressed to fellow officers in the Royal Engineers.

Letter from Charles George Gordon of Khartoum, [Sudan] to the Mudir [Governor] of Dongola, 22 Jun 1884. Indicating the state of affairs at Khartoum and asking for news of the relieving force. The letter appears to be more a record of a few spoken sentences than a connected message. A transcription of the Arabic into Latin script and two different translations into English are filed with the original.

Records of Hendon Magistrates' Court, 1873-1992 and Harrow (Wealdstone) Magistrates' Court, 1889-1934. Records of Hendon Magistrates' Court include: court registers (Hendon, Edgware and Harrow Courts); registers of juvenile, income tax and matrimonial cases; court minute books; licensing registers and bail forms. Records of Harrow (Wealdstone) Magistrates' Court include: court registers; Justices' Quarterly Meeting minute books and petitions.

Court registers record the date of the hearing, the name of the informant or complainant (often the police), the name of the defendant, a brief note of the offence and the decision of the magistrate. Court minute books or notebooks are rough notes of the proceedings recording the gist of the evidence given.

Domestic / matrimonial cases: A married woman under the provisions of the Summary Jurisdiction (Married Women) Act 1895 and subsequent Acts could go to a magistrates' court and apply for orders which in certain circumstances would enable her to separate from her husband, have custody of any children and receive maintenance from him. Under the Poor Law Amendment Act 1844 a mother expecting a bastard child or who had given birth to one could obtain a maintenance order against the putative father.

This small collection comprises tickets of admission to University of Edinburgh lectures; letters of confirmation of attendance at lectures; professional diplomas and Gorman's Grant of Arms.

E/GOR/1-174 comprise documents relating mainly to Gresse Street, Stephen Street, Percy Street and Tottenham Court Road, St Pancras, London. E/GOR/175-243 comprise documents relating to East Cowes Castle Estate and other properties at Whippingham and East Cowes, Isle of Wight. E/GOR/244-263 comprise documents relating mainly to Oatlands and Roxborough, Co Limerick, Ireland.

Each of these sections is further divided into: (i) marriage settlements, probates, and other documents listed by person, which cannot be related to a specific property; and (ii) documents listed by property. Except in listing the original numbered series, sub-numbering has only been used where an item was originally enclosed inside another item.

E/GOR/59-174 form an original numbered series. The series contains a few conveyances but consists mainly of licences to demise granted by the Lord of the Manor of Tottenham to a trustee under the will of John Jones, leases made by the trustees under the same will, and assignments of leases.

The properties were held in trust for his daughter, Elizabeth Mary, wife of George Tudor (who was also one of the trustees) and later wife of John Prendergast, Viscount Gort. Each group of deeds relating to a property has an original number (marked in red ink on some of the documents) making it a part of an original series consecutively numbered.

Within this number series the series is ordered by street and then by street number, although occasionally a document relates to different properties in different streets. Many of the documents are not numbered but were found with numbered documents relating to the same properties. This particularly applies to the licences.

The collection illustrates the history of piracy from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. It includes a journal of the voyage of Captain Bartholomew Sharp in the MAYFLOWER, 1680 to 1682, kept by his second-in-command, John Cox; it was on this voyage in the Pacific that Sharp captured a Spanish derrotero and the navigational information in it was used in the atlases of William Hack ([1656]-1708). Two letters from Sir Thomas Lynch (1603-?1684), Governor of Jamaica, give many details about measures taken to suppress piracy; the first, written to Sir Leoline Jenkins (1623-1683), Secretary of State, in 1683 relates principally to the interruption by privateers of the sugar trade of the West Indies; the second letter was written in 1683 to the Secretary of State for Northern Affairs, Lord Sunderland (1640-1702), and gives an account of the attack, led by Vanhorne (d.1683), on Vera Cruz. There is a journal and narrative account of the burning of La Trompeuse and other pirates in port at St Thomas's Island by Captain Charles Carlisle (d 1684) in the FRANCIS, 1683, and a collection of documents received by Sir Evan Nepean with some draft replies while Nepean was Governor of Bombay. These are mainly concerned with the expedition against piracy in the Persian Gulf between 1817 and 1819. There are also personal papers of Dr Gosse, which all relate to his publications on piracy.

The letters are mostly between Gosset (known as 'Student') and Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher (1890-1962) who became Professor of Eugenics at University College London. Letters from other scientists are interleaved where they bear on the correspondence.
