Genealogical papers of George Benington Wood, 1884-1920.

Notebooks of Alexander Kinloch Forbes, historian of Gujarat, containing notes on Gujarati history, legends and customs, pedigrees, descriptions of historical monuments and translations of inscriptions, compiled from 1849 onwards. The volumes are the remains of a larger body of research materials gathered by Forbes, from which he compiled Râs Mâlâ, Hindu annals of Western India with particular reference to Gujarat (1856). They contain however much additional matter, and indeed Forbes continued to add to them after publication of that work.

Three notebooks connected to the same Ross-on-Wye medical practice including notebook from William Edward Green’s student days, 1861, containing notes on anatomy and biochemistry, pharmaceutical formulae, notes on childbirth and notes on physiology and chemistry; general notebook of William Edward Green, the cover bearing a faded label reading "Club Prescription: Bate's Charity" and notebook of Walter Holcroft Cam, Arthur Llewellyn Baldwin Green and George Marner Lloyd, recording particular cases and noteworthy items from the medical press, 1932.

These manuscripts comprise material gathered by Norman Comben, a retired vet and dealer in books and manuscripts on veterinary topics, 1796-1913. The items originate from a wide variety of places in the United Kingdom; areas particularly well-represented include Cumberland and Westmorland, northern Ayrshire, Linlithgow, Cheshire and the neighbouring areas, and Herefordshire.

Notes of lectures on anatomy and surgery by William Hunter and William Cruikshank, taken by a student. The notes cover a course of 79 lectures given at Hunter's Great Windmill Street School, London, at some time after he had been joined by Cruikshank as assistant in 1771 (cf. MS. 5595). The latter's contribution to the course seems from these notes to have been considerable, suggesting that he was already well-established as co-lecturer. The student was probably John Power (fl. 1791-98), later a surgeon at Market Bosworth, Leics.

Diary of Captain Martin W Littlewood, Royal Army Medical Corps, from embarkation to join the B.E.F. in France in January 1917, through the battles of Arras and 3rd Ypres, the German offensive of Spring 1918 and the final advance leading to the Armistice, and on to his demobilisation in March 1919.

Translations by Miss K. Lone of extracts from the 'Dictionnaire des antiquités grecques et romains ... / sous la direction de Mm. Ch. Daremberg et Edm. Saglio'... (Paris: Hachette, 1877-1904).

'Abyssum duplicatum cum Hyrogliphis', illustrated by a few pen-drawings of alchemical apparatus, and 14 water-colour symbolic figures from the 'Viridarium chymicum' of Daniel Stolcius, published at Frankfurt in 1624. The contents of Volume I seem to be a transcript of Anton Joseph Kirchweger's 'Aurea catena Homeri', the title of which, beginning 'Eine Beschreibung von dem Ursprung der Natur [etc.]', is found on the third leaf. This work was first published at Leipzig in 1723 [cf. Ferguson, 'Bibliotheca Chemica', Volume I, pp. 469-471]. The second volume is concerned with the 'Introitus apertus ad occlusum regis palatium' by Eirenaeus Philaletha [cf. Ferguson op. cit. Vol. II, pp. 190-194], and it is noted that the German translation of this work published at Hamburg in 1705 has the title beginning 'Abyssus Alchymiae exploratus'.

Papers of Norman Ashton, 1924-1998, including correspondence relating to Ashton's research activities, his acceptance of numerous honours and awards, his duties whilst member of many socieities and institutes, and his activities whilst in various professional posts. Some correspondence from his childhood and teenage years is also included.

Also relating to Ashton's research activities are details of experiments, photographs, reports on findings, and copies of lectures and articles. Many unpublished speeches given at the events of various societies and institutes can also be found.

The collection includes Ashton's practical notebooks from his time as a student at Kings College London, and ephemera relating to his social pursuits in his early years, such as programmes for performances he was involved in, photographs, and illustrations. Also amongst the papers are Ashton's unpublished memoirs, which cover his life from 1913 to 1995.

Papers relating to Professor Garnham's career, with a little material of personal and biographical interest in Section A, and includes notebooks, correspondence, photographs etc. relating to his career in the Colonial Medical Services in Kenya, 1925-1947, and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 1947-1968.

These papers reflect the careers of the paediatrician, Philip Rainsford Evans, and of his wife Barbara, mainly in her capacity as medical journalist and author, 1923-1989. They include some family and personal material; diaries, correspondence and reports on setting up a Paediatrics Department at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, 1950s-1970s; material on the activities of the British Paediatric Team in Saigon, 1966-1973, including photographs; P R Evans's correspondence as Medical Adviser to Independent Television Companies Association, 1964-1989; material more generally on P R Evans' professional activities; general medical journalism and related material of Barbara Evans; files relating to her book Life Change on the menopause; her involvement with the Research Council for Complementary Medicine; and the research materials for and correspondence relating to her biography of Helena Wright, Freedom to Choose.

Papers of Hugo Rast, 1920-1976, including wartime diaries (with transcripts); papers relating to his activities as neutral member of the Mixed Medical Commission on Prisoners of War in the UK, with a little personal material and photographs, etc, of the German Hospital, also a selection of his files on distinguished patients.

Papers of Robert Macfarlane relating to his research, mainly on blood coagulation; notes and drafts for his biographies of Sir Alexander Fleming and Lord Florey, [1930-1986].

Midwifery records of Gertrude Mary Ethel Shannon constituting a relatively full record of midwifery training in the 1920s, and thus quite unusual. They are also of interest as Mrs Shannon trained under the pioneer medical woman Annie McCall at the Clapham Maternity Hospital (which was later renamed after Dr McCall), who supplied her with a testimonial (PP/SHA/1) and signed the certificates, PP/SHA/5/1-2. The exercise book includes notes on lectures by Dr McCall. The Central Midwives Board certificate is signed by Sir Francis Champneys.

This material represents Dr. Simpson's MSc project for the London School of Economics, 1980, investigating patient satisfaction with the pioneering day-care abortion service provided by Mile End Hospital in east London. 37 women applying for an abortion and 13 who had had abortions at the clinic were interviewed in the summer of 1979 about their expectations and experience of the service. The collection consists of the text of the dissertation, plus a shorter version of the findings published in Social Work Today in 1982, some additional material, and the tapes of the interviews undertaken for the project. The tapes contain numbered interviews, and in some cases also numbers which relate to the specific women who were subjects of the research, but this has not been done consistently, and there is no key to or explanation of the system. Some of the tapes are dated, others are not, but all of the interviews took place in summer 1979.

Papers of Fred Stratton, 1959-2003. Section A, Biographical, is very slight. It presents obituaries of Stratton, his curriculum vitae and list of publications. Section B, Research, is not extensive. There is some general and miscellaneous material, including schemes for Medical Research Council trials from 1978, a little documentation of research work of colleagues C.M. Giles and A.H. Merry, and material relating to a proposed private/public cooperation on blood preservation. There are subsections relating to Stratton's interest in the rare condition Angioneurotic Oedema, and to the Working Party on the Standardisation of Antiglobulin Reagents, a joint working party of the International Society of Blood Transfusion and the International Centre for Standardization in Haematology. There is a short sequence of correspondence, chiefly relating to haematology, and non-textual material, principally slides but also including a photograph, marked 'Very valuable' of 'Haemolysing anti P'.

Section C, Lectures and publications, is the largest in the collection. It comprises principally a sequence of drafts 1959-1986, mostly relating to public and invitation lectures delivered worldwide - Stratton travelled widely - on blood transfusion topics. The bulk of the drafts date from the 1970s and 1980s. In preparing a lecture or paper Stratton corrected and revised his drafts extensively and the material bears witness to the care he took. The section includes some illustrative material, chiefly for slides for lectures, and offprints of some of Stratton's publications.

Section D, British Blood Transfusion Society, covers the period 1981-1991. It offers significant documentation of the conception and establishment of the BBTS - membership, constitution, funding, relations with other bodies - and its early days during Stratton's inaugural Presidency, including administrative papers, organisation of meetings, speeches given by Stratton at BBTS occasions and awards made. Section E, Visits and conferences, is a presentation of a little material relating to visits made and conferences attended. The range and frequency of Stratton's travel is better evidenced in section C; many of his lectures are noted as being delivered to overseas audiences or at international conferences. There is also an index of correspondents.

The papers of T L Cleave, a pioneer in the field of nutrition, are predominantly correspondence files, generated by the series of publications in which he outlined his views on the medical dangers of a diet containing refined carbohydrate. The collection reflects the organic growth of an hypothesis, together with supportive evidence gathered from across the world, culminating in The Saccharine Disease, first published jointly with G D Campbell (1966). The majority of the papers are from 1952-1975.

Papers of the Association of Health and Residential Care Officers including minutes, yearbooks, and files on conferences and on general organisational matters. Minutes of the entire organisation survive only from 1915 and there is a large gap for the period 1933-1946, although there are earlier minutes from No 2 and No 4 Inspection Districts. Files relating to the organisation of, and proceedings at, Annual Conferences only go back to 1961.

Papers of the British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) documenting its work, consisting mainly of unsigned minutes of Council meetings, AGMs and Committee meetings, 1971-1994, including editorial board of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy; meetings programmes, 1972-1994; newsletters, 1990-1995; reports and discussion documents, 1982-1994; and records of international conferences, 1988-1993.

The records comprise the archive of the English Association and of the merged Association and give a representative overview of the work of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.Council minutes date from the establishment of the Association and include minutes of a joint Scottish/English Council 1952-1974.

The minutes and associated papers of the Executive Committee and other committees and sub-committees are not as complete: some may have been lost during the move to the present offices in 1989, others disposed of before then.

Papers of the Beit Memorial Fellowships for Medical Research Trust, 1910-1994. The bulk of the archive is made up of the files of Beit fellows. The first Fellowships were awarded in 1910 and the lists in Section B.1 cover all the Fellows, 1910-1994. The Fellows' files in A.2 date from 1912-1990. Other records include minutes of the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board (Fuller sets of minutes remain in the hands of the Trustees), correspondence, handbooks, some financial records and Directors' Reports and a newscuttings album. There is also a printed history of the Fellowships in section G.2.. A great deal of the correspondence on individual subjects survives from TR Elliott's time as Honorary Secretary.

Papers of the Health Visitors' Association dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th century until 1984, when Jane Wyndham-Kaye retired as General Secretary. It consists of minute books of the Executive Committee and various sub-committees, publications, ephemera and photographs, produced or collected by the Association. It does not, however, include any material from the Association's regional Centres and specialist Groups.

Papers of the Medical Research Council Medical Cyclotron Unit (MRCMCU), 1934-1961, comprising records relating to the Radium Beam Therapy Research Committee, 1933-1945; and records, including case registers, of treatment carried out using the radium beam and linear accelerator, 1934-1960.

This collection is made up of school magazines and other ephemera relating to the school. This includes a publicity poster, a speech day programme, and various pamphlets outlining the history of the school. There are no original records relating to the school or students in the collection.

This collection consists of ephemera relating to the Battersea Men's Institute such as brochures, syllabuses and programmes for annual shows of work by the members. There are also runs of the Weekly Bulletin and several copies of the Institute's journal Scope. Additionally there is also a copy of a 1930 inspection of the Institute carried out by the London County Council.

The collection is contains material relating to Spencer Park school including copies of the school magazine, papers outlining the history of the school and the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum site, prospectuses, photographs, newspaper cuttings, programmes and various other items. There are no administrative records for the school in the collection. Additionally there is a series of deeds, leases, and other papers relating to the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum site, the building of the school, and the sale of the site in the 1980s for redevelopment.

Papers of the Camberwell Council on Alcoholism including Minutes 1963-1980; annual reports, 1970s; reports and research papers, 1973-1979; files on alcoholism, homelessness, licensing laws, drunken driving, etc, and papers relating to liaison with related bodies, 1961-1980.

Records of the Cancer Research Campaign formerly the British Empire Cancer Campaign, covering all aspects of the Campaign's organization and activities. Sections A-C comprise committee minutes, agenda and papers, 1923-1976. The minutes of central headquarters committees are extensive, but there are serious gaps in the top level committees: Grand Council, the Executive Committee and the Scientific Advisory Committee. Efforts to locate the missing records have so far been unsuccessful. In addition, many minutes of sub-committees are either incomplete or unsigned copies. The collection contains very few records of regional branches; and information regarding either their existence or whereabouts is scant. The main body of the archive, Sections D-R, consists largely of files generated by Campaign headquarters, mainly the General Secretary's office. Files contain correspondence, reports, pamphlets, legal documents, press cuttings, articles, off-prints, posters, ephemera, etc. They cover the Campaign's history and organisation; senior members; relations with regional councils, branches, affiliatated bodies and other cancer organisations, both in the UK and overseas; cancer research and government provision; fund raising; research materials and equipment; cancer cures and causes; views and enquiries from the general public; cancer education and publications. There is also a series of press cuttings volumes, and three publicity films made in the 1950s.

The collection covers material relating to activities of the Association of District Community Physicians from its inception to 1980. They include minutes, lists of members, newsletters and subject files. Many files relate to the role of the District Community Physician in the reorganised NHS. The final year of its existence is not covered; however, some information may be found in the papers of the Society of Medical Officers of Health (SA/SMO) and Association of Area Medical Officers of Health (SA/AMO).
