Manuscripts collected by Augustine Vincent, some also created by him. The focus is strongly genealogical, but other types of content are included. Other identifiable authors, besides Augustine Vincent's son John, include Richard Scarlett (d 1607), Robert Glover (d 1588), Robert Cooke (d 1593), Richard Lee (d 1597), and the antiquarian Richard Gascoigne of Bramham Biggin, Yorkshire (d c 1661). Louise Campbell, editor of the published catalogue (see 'Finding Aids') categorises the volumes as laid out below:

44 volumes of pedigrees and 26 volumes of 'pedigrees and evidences', i.e. pedigrees supported by evidence such as charters. Eight of these 70 volumes are in the hand of Augustine Vincent, a further 4 have a substantial contribution in his hand, and many of the others have additions in the hands of both him and his son.

6 volumes containing pedigrees of one family (or in the case of MS Vincent 207, two families).

44 volumes of extracts from records, and 1 volume by John Vincent of copies or extracts from medieval muster rolls (MS Vincent 29). 17 of the 44 were written either by Augustine Vincent or a clerk working to his instructions; a further 3 include a contribution in Vincent's hand.

29 volumes of heraldic visitations: the original manuscript of the 1615 Visitation of Northumberland, and 28 copies of visitations. 13 of these are in Augustine Vincent's hand, of which 10 are not simple copies but amplified versions. These include expanded versions of visitations he conducted: Northamptonshire, 1618-19 (MS Vincent 113); Warwickshire, 1619 (MS Vincent 126); Leicestershire, 1619 (MS Vincent 127); Rutland, 1618-19 (MS Vincent 132); Shropshire, 1623 (MS Vincent 134). The expanded copy of the visitation of Surrey made by Vincent in 1623 is not in his own hand, but does include some material in his hand bound with it, and some church notes which are not in the record manuscript of the visitation.

MS Vincent 97 includes list of summonses to Parliament in the hand of Robert Glover, and MS Vincent 417, mostly in the hand of Richard Scarlett, includes lists of Knights of the Garter, with narrative material on the Order and some arms

Armorials: 34 volumes of armorials, 5 of which are armorial only in part. Includes painted armorials MS Vincent 152 (known as 'Prince Arthur's Book') and MS Vincent 153, both made by Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Garter King of Arms (d 1534). 'Prince Arthur's Book' so called due to the arms on page 1 originally of Henry VIII impaling those of Catherine of Aragon but altered to make them refer to Prince Arthur instead of Henry. This also contains royal arms and badges and a small pen drawing of a young King Henry VIII (p 90). 4 of the 34 manuscripts are written and either tricked or blazoned by Augustine Vincent, including MS Vincent 178, 'Vincent's Ordinary', a manuscript in 2 volumes containing about 15'000 shields of arms. 6 of the 34 armorials contain a series of copies of medieval rolls of arms. 15 of the 34 armorials are wholly, or in the case of 2 manuscripts, partly written and tricked by Richard Scarlett, including 3 of the 6 with copies of medieval rolls of arms.

Precedents, ceremonials, heraldic treatises and historical miscellanies: 14 manuscripts and part of the contents of a further 10 manuscripts. 5 of the collections of precedents are written by Augustine Vincent, assisted by a scribe. These include MS Vincent 151, 'Vincent's Presidents [Precedents]', a collection of precedents relating to Officers of Arms, their creation, organisation as a corporation and government, to orders of precedence, and to the marshalling of ceremonies for the various degrees of nobility, with fine illustrations. Also includes MS Vincent 444, a copy of Nicholas Upton's treatise De studio militari written by Robert Glover and illustrated with drawings, and two manuscripts dating to c. 1500-1550, MS Vincent 25, a ceremonial, and MS Vincent 50, an heraldic treatise.

Titles of honour, precedents concerning inheritance of title: 6 manuscripts, including MS Vincent 57, a copy of Robert Glover's Nobilitas politica vel civilis in the hand of his nephew Thomas Milles, possibly the one from which Milles had the treatise printed in 1608, and MS Vincent 58, written for Vincent and begun in his hand, apparently a version of the treatise printed by William Bird in 1642 under the title The magazine of honour

Grant books: 5 volumes of memoranda of grants of arms, MSS Vincent 157, 161, 162, 163 and 169, originally part of Vincent's collection, have been given the status of Records and are now part of the Record class known as Old Grants. Apart from these 5, 4 manuscripts in the collection (MSS Vincent 61, 86, 88 and 92) include small collections of mostly medieval grants of arms. The first 3 of these are in Vincent's handwriting.

Papers of Guy Pascoe Crowden, 1927-1953, largely relate to his appointment and work as Lecturer in Applied Physiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and comprise a comparative study of the development and physiology of identical twins by Crowden; information on the applied physiology course 1930-1931; paper on 'The practical value of physiology to industry' by Crowden, communication to the Department on Industrial Co-operation, British Association for the Advancement of Science, Leicester, 11 September 1933; appointment of Crowden as University Reader in Industrial Physiology and as Professor of Industrial Hygiene; material relating to his service in World War Two.

Papers of Dr Christopher Draper, 1949-1997, includes correspondence, research papers, notebooks, photographs, slides, articles, publications, teaching material, data tables and graphs concerning Christopher Draper's career as a medical officer, researcher and lecturer in tropical medicine. The collection relates to many of Draper's research projects overseas such as malaria studies in East Africa, particularly the Pare-Taveta and Mara regions and material also relates to other short-term projects abroad on behalf of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, World Health Organization or Overseas Development Administration. Research papers concern important work carried out in seroepidemiology, ELISA tests and malaria and teaching material includes slides for lectures, handouts and correspondence with students. Most of the papers stem from Draper's time at the LSHTM although photographs of Draper's posting as medical officer in the Middle East for the Red Cross are included.

Papers of Robert Henry Elliot, [1864-1936], reflect his specialisation in the field of ophthalmology and comprise original drawings, slides and catalogues. The collection notably includes hand drawn and coloured illustrations of diseases of the cornea and each is labelled with a diagnosis; slides, comprising 300 black and white photographs of patients with eye disorders and catalogues, including Catalogue of stereoscopic pictures, Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Madras, Elliot School of Ophthalmology (Government Press, Madras, 1932). Papers also include photographs of the original layout of display cases within the Elliot collection museum.

Twelve scientific notebooks, 1869-1886, relating to Lewis' research work while in India and as Assistant Professor in Pathology at the Army Medical School, Netley including information on patient observations, dissections of parasites and drawings.

Papers of William Norman Pickles comprise two epidemiology charts, dated 1929-1940 and 1956-1963, both complied in Aysgarth, Yorkshire.

Papers of The Centre for Sexual and Reproductive Health Research comprise posters and ephemera relating to sexual and reproductive health, and evaluation and campaign material, 1980s-1990s. Posters notably concern AIDS prevention and originate from countries across Europe including Norway, Greece, Switzerland and UK. Posters use strong imagery including condoms and syringes to illustrate the importance of sexual health, for example a Swedish poster includes an image of man and woman with condoms as halos, the caption reads 'Var din egen skyddsangel' or 'Be your own guardian angel'. Ephemera includes badges, bags, leaflets and tapes and videos from various countries concerning AIDS and sexual health campaigns.

Evaluation and campaign material relates to work carried out in 1980s and 1990s concerning AIDS and notably includes pamphlets and leaflets from campaigns carried out across Europe, AIDS Strategic Monitor publications and surveys and research collated by various market research companies. The material was presumably collected from and hence relates to Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, Poland, Austria, Italy, Luxemburg, UK, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Norway and Greece.

This series has nine sub-series. These cover Telegrams (general), Greetings Telegrams, Forces Telegrams, the Telemessage Service, Overseas Radio and Telecommunications Branch, the Rules and Procedures, material used for exhibitions, Press cuttings and History.

This series comprises publications, reports, minutes and correspondence on the establishment, operation and development of the Public Relations Department (PRD) and its predecessors and successors. It also contains records on the communication and marketing activity of the Post Office, as well as advertising, training, and educational material produced by the PRD and other Post Office departments.

This series contains Post Office documentation relating to the lifespan of Girobank, from its setting up until after its sale. Documentation takes the form of annual reports, organisational reviews, correspondence with other branches of the Post Office and with external bidders, press releases and clippings, press briefings, minutes of committees representing the Girobank sale or other businesses within Royal Mail, correspondence with Government officials and departments, promotional material, specimen samples of stationery, staff training leaflets and analytical studies. This series also takes into account the impact of the sale of Girobank on Post Office Counters Ltd and charts subsequent Post Office events during the 1990s.

This series relates to conveyance of mails within the United Kingdom and Ireland by sea. The majority of records are on the Irish and Scottish packet services, with a few contracts for mail services to the Scilly Isles, Lundy Island and the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, placed at the end of the series.

This series comprises copy letter books relating to administration of the Post Office in Britain and Ireland and, to an extent, overseas.

This series relates to the postal draft system from its inception in 1912 until it ceased in 1969 with the introduction of Girobank services. It comprises correspondence between the Post Office and government departments, committee minutes, reports, and specimens of postal drafts.

POST 2 comprises the Receiver General's monthly record of all money received and expended on a monthly or quarterly basis by the Post Office. However, POST 2/107-112, covering the Bye and Cross Road Letter Office, contain quarterly accounts only. Subject, place and name indexes are included in POST 2/1-44, covering 1677-1748, although they are not contemporary compilations. Dates on volumes prior to 1752 have been revised in the catalogue to conform to the modern Gregorian calendar.

This series relates to the transmission of newspapers by post and comprises records relating to the franking privilege of the Clerks of the Road, the transmission of newspapers overseas, and the postage rates of Newspaper Post. The majority of the class consists of published lists of newspapers registered at the Post Office for transmission under the Newspaper Post, (POST 24/21 - 24/72). Also included are items relating to the introduction of a rural newspaper delivery service in the 1970s.

This series contains historical accounts, annual, financial and other reports, letter copy books, minutes and correspondence on the establishment, operation and development of the money order and postal order services. The series also contains records on the prevention and detection of fraud, the use of postal orders as currency in wartime, and information on agreements with other Empire or Commonwealth countries for the sale of British postal or money orders in their territories.

This series comprises material relating to Post Office services supplementary to the core activity of the business. It consists of reports, minutes, correspondence and memoranda relating to the introduction, operation and development of individual Post Office ancillary services, their profit and expenditure, recommended improvements and alterations, and information sheets and guides to the services.

The Packet Minute series (POST 29 and 34) comprise minutes to the Postmaster General from the Secretary to the Post Office, on the Packet Boat and overseas mails services. It began in 1811, at which date those subjects were transferred from the Postmaster General's Minute series (POST 30 and 35).

POST 29 consists of volumes containing a copy of, or reference to, every minute submitted to the Postmaster General, including those which have since been destroyed. POST 34/1 - 105 are indexed. The Postmaster General's decision on each case is also recorded. POST 29 consists of those actual papers which are still in existence (comprising both the original minute to the Postmaster General and the papers leading up to, and following from, the Secretary's submission). It has been produced in two versions, one numerical and the other alphabetical, i.e., set out under subject headings. When requisitioning papers, both the catalogue reference Nos. and the Minute No. should be quoted, e.g., POST 29/4, Pkt 203B/1314.

As a result, the minuted papers frequently consist of quite large bundles of files on a common subject spanning many years. The date range of the files is consequently often much earlier or much later than the date suggested by the 'Former Reference' used by the registry staff and, in many cases, the precise dates covered by the files have not yet been listed. The subject of individual files among the minuted papers can be wide-ranging, from the mundane administrative minutiae to policy decisions on developments of critical importance.

This series comprises 'minuted' papers relating to all manner of Post Office matters.

This record series comprises memoranda, letters and reports on the establishment and operation of the Foreign and Colonial Parcel Post, and agreements between the Post Office of the United Kingdom, and foreign postal authorities and shipping companies. It also includes papers relating to 1970s and 1980s overseas parcel services.

POST 5 comprises a series of quarterly accounts of warrants issued by the Treasury authorising payment, by the Receiver General, of incident bills incurred by the General, Twopenny and London District Post Offices (the Twopenny Post was replaced by the London District Post in 1844).

Accounts cover a wide variety of items and are arranged under general subject headings, such as 'pensions', 'packets', 'tradesmen' and 'rents'. Entries include the date of issue of warrant, what or whom it is for, date payment is due and the amount. Volumes are indexed by person, subject and place. Warrants are mainly for payments of:

· Pensions, salaries and allowances to chief and senior officers, clerks, sorters, messengers and servants working in the London headquarters departments, including offices of the Secretary and Accountant General, and the Foreign, Inland, Express, Mail Coach, Dead Letter and Ship Letter offices; packet agents; surveyors; postmasters; inspectors of mails, letter receivers and carriers and packet ships; commanders and mates of packet ships, or their widows; letter receivers and carriers in London; and mail guards

· Expenses for mail conveyance by sea, including costs incurred by packet ships operating from Falmouth, Harwich, Dover, Whitehaven, Donaghadee, Weymouth, Milford Haven and Holyhead, and in the West and East Indies, notably hire charges, lighting dues, wages and victualling for captains, officers and crew whilst at sea, out of employ or while the ship is undergoing repairs; and ship letter mails

· Expenses for inland mail conveyance, notably for payments to mail coach contractors; road, bridge and ferry tolls; supply and upkeep of fire arms, time pieces, mail bags and mail guards uniforms; mail coach maintenance; and railway and steam packet company charges

· Compensation for abolished offices or duties

· Tradesmen's bills for items supplied or work done

· Legal expenses, notably relating to investigation, detection, capture and trial of felons

· Rents, taxes and rates for offices in London

· stationery printing costs

· Transit postage and tonnage dues to foreign post offices

· Travelling expenses, particularly surveyors'

· Advances or loans (covered by imprest warrants) to employees, particularly seamen.
