Disputatio quinta et ultima pathologica, in qua agitur de curandis affectibus praeter naturam. The first few leaves of Vol. II have a marginal running title 'Onofrii Ricci Practica'. This volume is dated 1650 at the end. These are notes of Lectures in a Course on the general Practice of Medicine. As in that MS. there is the inscription: 'Ex Rev. D. Indico Mancini' written on the verso of the last leaf of each volume. On the verso of the last leaf of Vol. I: 'Indicus Antonius Mancinus Anno MDCLXXXiii': and on the second fly-leaf of Vol. II 'Del Ph[ilippo?] Fidelis Manzi'. Produced in Naples.

Medical papers and letters of Robert Whytt, Professor at Edinburgh Medical School from 1746. Whytt's association with the University began in the years 1730-1734, as a pupil of Alexander Monro (1697-1767). After qualification and general practice, Whytt joined the faculty, becoming an important figure in its establishment as a leading centre of medical education in Europe. These papers span the period of Whytt's working life from his student training through to the teaching and publications of his mature years. The materials are largely professional, although there are a few family items. Manuscripts include notebooks and lectures compiled by Whytt as both student and teacher: drafts of published and unpublished works; case-notes and prescriptions; correspondence and fragments of letters written to Whytt; and miscellaneous other papers collected by him.

Manuscripts from the collection of the British Medical Association, formerly held in the BMA Library, Tavistock Square, London. The manuscripts were numbered and catalogued at the BMA, with two exceptions among these papers - however the numbering of surviving documents is not consecutive, so that the original collection must have contained at least 26 catalogued items and an unknown number of unrecorded acquisitions. Former BMA MSS.1-6 (transferred at the same time as the manuscripts described here) are now GC/140; one fugitive BMA manuscript was purchased separately and is now MS. 6881. The location of the remainder is not known. The contents mainly comprise transcripts of medical lectures and case notes.

Manuscript copies of texts by, or collated by Ruffo, plus in some cases other veterinary texts added to works by Ruffo. The texts reflect his work in veterinary medicine, primarily concerning the care and treatment of domestic animals, particularly horses. Letters and papers of René Desgenettes, 1793-1813, mainly official orders relating to medical services in the French army in Egypt, of which he was physician in chief. With a few letters from Desgenettes to his wife. The letters and papers concerning the Egyptian campaign complement Desgenettes' own published account, Histoire médicale de l'Armée d'Orient (Paris, 1802), which was largely compiled from copies of his out-letters.

Personal papers and correspondence of John Coakley Lettsom, 1766-1812, including medical papers and pamphlets by Lettsom, newspaper cuttings relating to him, or subjects that interested him. Letters from various correspondents, mainly from the medical profession. The papers reflect his primary interests in 'Quacks and Quackery', clinical medicine, pathology, materia medica, variolation and vaccination. Many relate to the business of the Medical Society of London, of which Lettsom was President. There is also a fragment of an autobiography of his life as a as a student, MS.3245.

MSS.3259-3285 comprise chiefly scientific material; they include student notebooks on zoology, botany and geology (MSS.3259-3280); scientific logs from the British Antarctic Expedition (MSS.3281-3283), specifically a biological log (MSS.3281-3282) and a log of whales sighted (MS.3283), both spanning 1910-1913; an address delivered in 1913 to the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association on Mendel's principle of heredity (MS.3284); and some notes on fish and fishing (MS.3285). MSS.5252-5254 comprise more personal and more miscellaneous material. MS.5252 is a scrapbook kept by Lillie, containing news cuttings, photographs and miscellaneous papers, spanning the period c.1845-1910 and including cuttings (with portrait prints) on science and scientists, 1845-1901; caricatures by Lillie of lecturers and staff at Birmingham University, 1904-1905; geological photographs, 1907-1909; family photographs (including a group class portrait at United Services' College, Westward Ho!, c.1892); and ephemera from Cambridge, 1909-1910. MS.5253 comprises cuttings from newspapers and illustrated magazines, spanning 1910-1914 and mainly relating to Robert Falcon Scott's British Antarctic Expedition. Finally MS.5254 comprises correspondence and very miscellaneous papers from the period 1824-1938 (plus some undated material) among them letters to his grandfather John Lillie D.D. (1806-1866), and to his maternal relatives the Macaire family, and letters to Lillie from E.A.N. Arber, Caroline Oates and others.

Typescript signed with holograph additions and corrections entitled "Our Fathers that begat us, and other papers on the history of Medicine", by Donald Percy McDonald with a Foreword by Professor Sir Francis Fraser [1885-1964]. Inserted loose are 8 photographs intended for illustrations for the printed book. Included is a typescript letter signed by the author dated 11 July 1946 referring to an illustration of a surgeon's instrument-case belonging to Lord Lee of Fareham [1868-1947], with an initialed note of permission to use it by the owner in red crayon. In both volumes there are historiated ornaments, vignettes, tail-pieces, etc., by the calligrapher who signs himself on the title-page of Vol. I 'J. S. Fyot, Écrivain. 1796'.

'Leçons sur l'astronomie sphérique', illustrated by numerous pen-drawn diagrams and figures. The MS. is written with very wide margins, and contains the complete course of 54 lessons.

The collection centres on Wallich's work on biology, particularly marine biology, and his belief that other figures in the field were ignoring or plagiarising his discoveries. As well as his notes, it includes a collection of offprints by Wallich (MS.4969) and a collection of offprints by other scientists, with Wallich's comments (MS.4970).

Two notebooks of Claude François Déveille, 1807-1836, one recording pharmacy in use in military hospitals (plus some erotic poems) and the other a commonplace book.

Translation into English of ancient Egyptian text on the healing art.

'Consulti medici con varie annotazioni al Boeraavio [sic] estratte d'all' Aller [sic] e Wanswieten [sic]', the two volumes contain 300 'Consulti', many of which are apparently written by Felici or signed by him, usually dated from Terni, and giving his title 'Primo medico'. Other entries are probably copies, and are written by different hands, and assigned to various contemporary Italian physicians. The first volume has a title as given above, the second is lettered 'Consulti medici, Volume secondo'. Produced in Terni [etc.].

Personal correspondence and papers of Baron Ernst von Feuchtersleben, mainly relating to medical topics and to the Faculty of Medicine in Vienna, 1826-1858. The papers are mainly copies of medical texts with mansuscript annotations and copies of medical essays by him - some unpublished. Also, his case book 1836-1842. The records often relate to the Viennese Medical Faculty, his interest in medical education, and addresses given by him. The correspondence is primarily from medical colleagues in Austria and Germany.

Papers of Frederick Gardiner comprising short papers on dermatological subjects, and material for the third edition of Gardiner's Handbook of Skin Diseases.

Book by Sir John Jacob Hansler entitled Dyspepsia. Or the Autobiography of an Invalid. Containing many singular Adventures and Providential Escapes during an eventful life, interspersed with a Variety of Original Anecdotes, useful Information, Medical Recipes from some of the first Galens of the late and the most celebrated Esculapians of the present Day-the whole compiled with an earnest Desire to promote Health and Longevity. As well as Truth and Amusement ... In two Volumes. Mainly holograph, but with passages written by another hand, probably that of a lady. The latest date found in the text is 1837, and the diary proper seems to end in 1835, having been begun in about 1808. The book is dedicated to H.R.H. Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex [1773-1843], and was apparently prepared for the press, but no record of its publication has been traced.

Papers of Matthew Hay on chemistry, 1882-1884, in particular its application to the life sciences; nitrogen compounds and their use in treating angina pectoris comprise the largest subject. One item (MS.2796) is produced in collaboration with Sir David Orme Masson (1858-1937).

Commonplace book by Henry Holden (MS.2863), plus notes by A W J Haggis of the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum (MS.8956) summarising the volume and comprising a contents list and some transcriptions.

Notes and extracts on vegetable materia medica, botany, etc. (with the exception of MS.2882, which deals with British insects, and MS.7961 which consists of general correspondence). The plants discussed include species from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Many of the pieces are drafts of lectures (to bodies such as the Royal Botanic Society) or of papers later published in journals such as the Pharmaceutical Journal, Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association, etc. Some items include inserted correspondence.

Traité des fièvres. The general title, and that on the spine is 'Leçons de Médecine'. The work is probably incomplete, as at the end of the second volume is 'Fin du tome second': it appears to be a student's notes of lectures, probably given at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris. On page 416 of volume one, the date 1814 occurs, which is stated to be 'l'année dernière'. Produced in Paris.

Emily Jermyn papers, 1818, comprising: 'Botanic etymology, or an attempt to derive from their original language, and to explain the names and terms, generic and specific, used in the Science of Botany: and to determine from such sources their proper and correct prosody. With short biographical notices of such eminent persons whose names have been honored in their adaption to plants: and many anecdotes ... relating to their cultivations, properties and uses. Author's holograph MSS. An exhaustive work which must have involved enormous labour: it is unpublished.' Produced in Sibton (Suffolk).

Papers of Dominique Jean Larrey including personal correspondence (1770-1855) and a journal (1813-1814). Correspondence by him to his wife, daughter and son, and letters to him by various correspondents. The papers originate mainly from his journeys and campaigns with the army, including: France, Germany, Italy, Egypt Prussia, Russia, Poland, Austria, Spain and Austria. In addition MS.3173 is a resumé by Larrey's son of his career 1766-1814.

Records of the Abortion Law Reform Association, its officers, and individuals connected with the attempt to reform the abortion laws, plus various associated materials. The administrative records of the ALRA c 1935-1978, include papers of Chairman Janet Chance, and, following the passing of 1967 Act making abortion legal, papers of the 'Lane' Committee on Working of the Aberdeen Act and Abortion Amendment Bills.

Papers of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). The genesis of ASH is illustrated in Fletcher's papers (section Q), arising out of his work on the Royal College of Physicians smoking reports. There is a full run of Committee minutes from 1971 onwards (section B). The bulk of the files are those of the Director, associated with all aspects of ASH's campaigning and administrative work. These overlap to some extent with the files of the Project Officer (section P), which are concerned with various specific campaigns, especially about smoking in the workplace and in public places. Published papers, leaflets, posters and booklets are to be found in files throughout the archive, but section T consists of publications which were filed together, apparently transferred from the ASH library.
