Records of the Land Tax Commissioners, comprising land tax assessments and redemptions for properties in the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Greenwich, Wandsworth, Westminster, Bexley, Barnet, Islington, Haringey, City of London, and Southwark.

Records of the Land Tax Commissioners for the City of London, including a number of administrative papers (see Ms 11295-315, 11318-20) and also a fine run of assessment books for the City, 1692/3-4 and 1703/4-1949, arranged by wards (Ms 11316-317D). The run of assessments are particularly valuable as they predate those for most counties, which only survive from 1780, when duplicate returns had to be lodged with the Clerk of the Peace.

The Tower Division of Middlesex covered the area to the east of the City of London including Hackney, Whitechapel, Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Wapping, Norton Folgate, Poplar, Stratford, Bow, Mile End, Bethnal Green and Stepney. The records comprise land tax assessment books arranged by parish.

Copies of contracts and notarial certificate documenting the sale of a house at Burgschmietstrasse 12, Nuremberg, property of Max and Frieda Landenberger, to Gauleiter Hölz for the sum of RM 4,000 and a summary of the event, 4 Dec 1938-27 Feb 1939. This collection is an example of the way in which the Nazis forcibly appropriated Jewish property under the guise of a legitimate transaction into which both parties freely entered.

Papers of Myer Jack Landa, 1900-1945, including papers relating to Jewish organisations including the Jewish Association of Arts and Sciences, the Jewish Fund for Soviet Russia, the Refugee Industries Committee and the Israel Delivered from Bondage Society; correspondence, 3 Sep 1943-27 Feb 1945 and newspaper and journal articles, chiefly reviews of books with a Jewish theme, some of them by Landa, 1900-1943.

Interview transcripts, research notes, press cuttings and draft broadcast scripts relating to Landmines: Hidden Assassins, 1997. The documentary examined the threat of land mines; efforts to ban them including the campaign of the late Diana, Princess of Wales; the lives of land mine victims; the process of removing anti-personnel land mines; educating children on avoiding land mines; the debate over the United States of America's refusal to sign the Ottawa Treaty (Mine Ban Treaty), 1997; and the use of high-tech land mines. The report focused on Cambodia, one of the countries most affected by the use of land mines. The collection includes drafts of the script; transcripts of interviews with land mine experts including ordinary Cambodians affected by landmines; Ian Doucet, UK Working Group on Landmines (now Landmine Action UK); Steve Goose, Director of Human Rights Watch Arms Division; Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1997 and Campaign Ambassador, International Campaign to Ban Landmines; Bobby Muller, founder, Vietnam Veterans of America and co-founder International Campaign to Ban Landmines; Robert Cowles, Demining Office, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict, Pentagon; Robert Bell, Special Assistant to President Clinton for National Security Affairs, 1993-1997; Colin King, international landmine and explosive ordnance disposal consultant; Ieng Moly, former Minister of Information, Cambodia; Dr Hans Winkler, Austrian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs; Ian Brown, aid worker, formerly of the Mines Advisory Group; and Paul Jefferson, former British mine disposal officer and freelance mine clearer severely wounded by a mine in Kuwait, 1991. Also research notes including background information on interviewees, anti-landmine campaign material, press cuttings, statistics, interviews and articles; schedules, lists of filming undertaken and lists of footage drawn from film archives.

These are persons charged with debt, damages, bills of Middlesex, in King's Bench Prison; not criminal offences.

Records of the Langbourn Ward, Corporation of London. The records comprise minutes, rate assessments and inhabitants lists, administrative papers and records of assistance sought from the benevolent fund. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

The only surviving records of Langbourn Ward School are trustees' minutes from 1738 and a set of rules.

Papers of Felix Langer, 1933-1941, comprise three volumes of diaries plus enclosures. The diaries contain mostly sparse notes often barely legible. A large part of the content relates to books.

Receipt for payment of a fine of £8.15s.8d. for admission to copyhold property in the Manor of Langford (Bedfordshire), paid by Mrs Squire as guardian for her son, William Enderby Squire, 16 July, 1781. The receipt is signed by John Pedley, Steward of the estate. The property consisted of a messuage, a close and 2½ acres of land.

Papers of Joseph Langland, undated, comprise copies of his poems about Buchenwald and Hiroshima entitled 'Buchenwald near Weimar'; 'The Lotus Song'; 'A Hiroshima Lullaby' and a copy of an entry from Who's Who in America.

Manuscripts of 'The Vision of Piers Plowman' and 'La Estorie del Evangelie'. The 'Piers Plowman' manuscript is written in a set book-hand on both sides of 97 folio leaves of vellum and is bound in modern white pig skin. The first page of the manuscript is decorated with an illuminated capital in blue, with red and brown ink penwork heightened with gold; the capital at the beginning of each Passus is blue with red ink decorations; Latin words in the text, names and the beginning and end of each Passus are written in red ink.

'La Estorie del Evangelie', a manuscript poem of 2206 lines, is written in the same book hand as 'The Vision of Piers Plowman', on both sides of 17 folio leaves of vellum. A space has been left for the initial 'S' but there is otherwise no rubrication, though spaces possibly for illustration, appear between the various sections of the manuscript.

Lansbury's personal and political correspondence; correspondence between Lansbury's biographer, Raymond Postgate, and others after his death; correspondence and papers on subjects of interest to Lansbury, including schools, the Labour Party, unemployment, agriculture, India, the 1931 Cabinet Crisis, and the Metropolitan Police; photographs, personal and official, and caricatures from the press; press reviews of Lansbury's published works; printed matter, including articles, pamphlets, speeches and leaflets by or concerning Lansbury, election addresses, and personal ephemera. Volumes 1 - 26 consist of the personal and political correspondence and papers used by Lansbury's son-in-law, Raymond Postgate, in researching The Life of George Lansbury, published in 1951. These papers were presented to the British Library of Political and Economic Science by Professor Postgate in 1950. Volumes 27 - 30 were added to the collection some time later, and volume 31 consists of three files of personal correspondence which were added to the collection in 1994 and one file found in 1999.

Authenticated copy by Gobinet de la Court, tabellion (scrivener) royal of Laon, France, 31 Dec 1457, of letters of King Charles VII of France under the great seal dated at Tours on 31 Jul 1436, letters of the Generaux des Finances dated at Tours on 2 Aug 1436, and letters of the Gens de la Chambre des Comptes dated at Limoges on 16 Aug 1436, by which the Abbey of St Vincent was to pay to Poton, Lord of Xaintrailles and captain of royal troops in Laon, the sum of 3,000 livres for the prosecution of the war in return for an annual pension of 300 livres assigned on royal revenues in the Vernandois until the sum was repaid. An endorsement sets forth that the Dean and Canons of the Church of Our Lady at Laon have acquitted the King and all others concerned of the rent mentioned in the copied letters, and have delivered the originals to the King's Receiver.

Papers of Cpt Dennis Augustus Hugo Larking, consisting of private letters to Captain Larking from Admiral of the Fleet Earl Beatty (1871-1936) and Lady Beatty (d 1932). Lady Beatty's letters, 1914 to 1918, were mostly written from Aberdour House, Fife. The letters from Earl Beatty, 1914 to 1928, date mostly from the war, when the Admiral commanded the First Battle Cruiser Squadron, later the Battle Cruiser Force, and then the Grand Fleet.
