The collection comprises diaries of William Hugh Burgess, a fifteen-year old boy from a family of Huguenot descent, who lived in Marylebone in the late eighteenth-century. They are rare examples of historical diaries written by a child.

In what became part of his daily routine from January 1788 until October 1790, William wrote about himself and his everyday life, simply recording what he did and what he saw.

The collection contains papers, correspondence and diaries of Sir John Burdon-Sanderson and also papers of his wife Lady Burdon-Sanderson. Some of the papers include notes and drafts of lectures and addresses. There are also papers that were used for a Memoir of John Burdon-Sanderson, begun by Lady Burdon-Sanderson and completed by Burdon-Sanderson's niece and nephew, Elizabeth Sanderson Haldane and John Scott Haldane (published in Oxford, 1911).

Papers of Geoffrey Bullough, [1957-1975] contain typescript proofs of publications edited by Bullough. The collection contains annotated galley proofs from Bullough's Narrative and dramatic sources of Shakespeare (Columbia U.P, 1957 and later editions), notably including two copies of The Tradegie of Antonie by Robert Garnier, translated by Mary Herbert (1595) and two copies of The Troublesome raigne of King John (anonymous, 1591); carbon copy of The Taming of the Shrew [edited 1957-1975], which includes pencil annotation 'check this with original text'; annotated photocopy of Rosalynde. Letter from William Humphries Budden of Newcastle upon Tyne to Charles Manby, 28 Oct 1859. 'I am glad you are going to write a memoir of our dear Chief'.

The majority of the collection is made up of journals kept by Buckle during the years 1866-1870, during which he travelled to South America, South Africa and Australia (there are also periods during which he was stationed at Portsmouth). There are some lacunae in the sequence of diaries. There is also one autograph album kept by Buckle relating partly to his own affairs (his application to become House Surgeon at the West Norfolk and Lynn Hospital, 1863-1864) but also including older material predating his birth.

Correspondence, 1996, on The Buchenwald Poem, chiefly comprising numerous versions of the poem in English with covering letters and a letter from Gary Wollner (formerly Gerhardt Wollner), to whom the poem was dedicated, explaining how and why the poem was written.

This collection consists mainly of correspondence received by Harry Brittain. Manuscripts from the collection of the British Medical Association, formerly held in the BMA Library, Tavistock Square, London. The manuscripts were numbered and catalogued at the BMA, with two exceptions among these papers - however the numbering of surviving documents is not consecutive, so that the original collection must have contained at least 26 catalogued items and an unknown number of unrecorded acquisitions. Former BMA MSS.1-6 (transferred at the same time as the manuscripts described here) are now GC/140; one fugitive BMA manuscript was purchased separately and is now MS. 6881. The location of the remainder is not known. The contents mainly comprise transcripts of medical lectures and case notes.

The correspondence, papers and diaries of Sir Charles Blagden. Blagden's papers are interesting on several levels, generally for his close contact with European men of learning, and his relationship with Sir Joseph Banks. Blagden's professional researches are represented by medical notes in the boxed sequence. These are grouped with papers on other subject interests, including linguistics, e.g. a draft Tahitian-English dictionary, compiled from conversations with Omai, whom Blagden inoculated after Omai's voyage to England with James Cook. Blagden's interest in antiquities and travel is documented by diary entries, as is his intercourse with fellow scientists, particularly those associated with the founding of the Royal Institution.
