The documents are chiefly unbound business papers (in bundles, some original) and mostly dated between 1754 and 1898, together with a few family papers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and photocopies of items removed for sale in the late 20th century.

The archives in this collection are the surviving business records, covering mainly the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are primarily the records of the Strand and Royal Exchange shops - only Ms 18026 and 23823-4 relating to M. F. Dent, 1856-1920, appear to have survived.

A note at the front of the policy registers states that up to 1891 (policy number 13787), details of policies were entered in five books: policy ledgers; dockets (Ms 38667); ticket books; registers of notices of assignment (Ms 38668); and policy loan ledgers.
In 1908, new policy registers were compiled for all the policies up to number 13787 which were still in force (Ms 38664). These new registers contain all the information for each policy on a single page.
