Local Government Guarantee Society board of directors minutes.

Records of the Middlesex County Council Local Taxation Department, 1916-1965, including Section Heads meetings notes; Inspector's Conferences notes; correspondence with the Ministry of Transport; statistics relating to licences; papers relating to overtime and leave; petrol allowances; papers relating to the administration and control of licences for hawkers, moneylenders, pawnbrokers and refreshment houses; papers relating to dog, gun and game licences; notes on local taxation licences; papers relating to vehicle registration and licensing including correspondence and registers; and examples of application forms and licences.

The collection comprises letters to James Loch and other members of his family. Many of the letters concern the founding and early management of University College London, then known as London University, and matters relating to the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. There are a few letters relating to personal and family matters.

Diary of Sir Charles Stewart Loch. It concerns chiefly his work as Secretary to the Council of the London Charity Organisation Society from September 1876 to November 1887.

Loci communes medici. In Latin and French, by two different compilers. The earlier part in both volumes is entirely in Latin, and may have been begun about the middle of the 17th cent., though the date 1667 is found on fol. 371v of the Vol. 1. This section contains extracts from late 16th cent. and 17th cent. medical works. An entry on Vol. 11, fol. 49v bears the date 1666. The entries by the later compiler are in French and Latin, with French predominating, and contain extracts from medical writers, notes of cases, etc., dated from the later part of the 17th cent. to 1721 (Vol. I, fol. 327). In Vol. II there are a few entries in French, and some on astronomical topics by a third writer; among these the date 1759-in the extract on 'Aphélie'-occurs.

Records of James Lock and Company including series of day books (1781-1969, with gaps) and order books (1805-1998, with gaps). There were always two order books in use at any one time, one in the shop and one in the office, and as a result the dates overlap in many volumes. There is also a series of rough order books, called waste books (1798-1819), and special order books series for ladies' hats, for hunting wear and foreign and export orders. There are product statistics for 20th century. Very few product drawings, or fabric samples are included (for samples for special orders 1995-1998 see B/LK/422).

All these series contain similar elements of information, namely the customer's name and address, description of hat ordered and the total cost.

The collection also contains financial records, including ledgers, cash books, customer accounts and bad debts which summarise outstanding payments due from customers; staff salaries (1927-1954) (B/LK/619) and R Lincoln's executors account (B/LK/254).

Papers relating to William Lockhart, comprising transcripts, 1995, of 170 letters (1805-1948) to and from William Lockhart and his family. The majority of the letters date from the periods 1833-1834, when he was studying in Dublin and London, and 1841-1844, when he first arrived in China. Also included is a typescript biography by A P Hughes, 'Dr William Lockhart 1811-1896: Medical Missionary to China', 1995.

Medical, cookery, and household receipts and prescriptions. There are many blank leaves, and a large number of the receipts are inserted loose. Among the latter are 17 holograph receipts, dated between 1830 and 1832 by Jules Sichel [1802-1868], the ophthalmologist. These were all prescribed for Lady Julia.

Personal Papers and correspondence of Sir Charles Locock (1799-1875) MSS.7807-7808. This consists of 11 items, 1821-1875. The Locock family papers, MSS.5782-5785, consist of 99 items, 1851-1948. The papers are primarily those of Revd Alfred Henry Locock (1829-1922), his wife Anna Maria, and Charles Dealtry Locock (1862-1946). The papers include a number of items relating to the illness and death of Sir Charles Locock. 1851-1948.

Lodz Ghetto papers, 1941-1942, comprise copies of registration cards of Isaak and Martha Teich-Birken, confirming their entry to and departure from the Lodz Ghetto, Poland.

Partial alphabetical list (letters R-Z) of names of the survivors of Lodz ghetto, Poland, during World War Two, including date of birth and last known address (1939). Created, 13-27 June 1945.

Papers concerning Lodz ghetto, 1942-1944, comprise post cards addressed to the Ältester der Juden, Jewish leader of the Lodz Ghetto, from various individuals in Czechoslovakia, Germany and Poland, enquiring after the whereabouts and health of family members. The collection also includes an identity card of Esther Goldberg, entitling her to a midday meal, Lodz Ghetto.

Microfilm of facsimile documentation from the Lodz ghetto, 1940s, including material on the controversial role of the chairman of the Judenrat, Mordechai Rumkowski, including printed public ghetto announcements in Yiddish and German dealing with such subjects as food rationing, forged ghetto money, saluting Germans, sanitary conditions, the use of electric cookers, and arrangement for the 're-settlement' of ghetto inmates, 1941-1944; fragment of a calendar covering part of the year 1942, the front bears an image of Rumkowski with the ghetto in the background and the month of January opens with the slogans 'work', 'bread', 'care of the sick', 'protection for the children', 'peace in the ghetto'; plan of Lodz ghetto entitled 'plan of Litzmannstadt showing Jewish populated areas' [1940] and school reports from former pupils of the Humanistischen Lyzeum, Lodz.

Account of Paul Loebl's experiences during the Nazi era. It is described as 'a translation of a report to the Director of the VAD'. The original is thought to have been in German. It is not known what the VAD is.

Part one of manuscript of paper, 'On the geology of portions of the Turko-Persian frontier and of the districts adjoining' by William Kennett Loftus, [1854-1855], from research conducted during Loftus' tenure as part of the joint Turco-Persian frontier commission between 1849-1852. Also large volume containing the manuscript watercolour and ink drawings of landscapes and geological sections, which illustrated the paper, by Loftus and Henry Adrian Churchill who was the secretary of the British contingent of the joint commission, [1849-1855].

Log book of the 'Speights Town' of Liverpool, 'bound to Madeira and Barbados', with entries from 28 Jan to 16 May 1788, and an undated account of expenses and goods bought at Madeira and Barbados on the back fly-leaves. The entries are in a Mariner's Journal Book, or the Liverpool ready-ruled Journal...by Egerton Smith (1787), a printed log-book, completed in manuscript. The ship's cargo included wine, sugar, and cotton. The front flyleaf is dated 'York 1788'.

Records of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, relating not only to the everyday administration of the Society (Acc/2899/01 and Acc/2899/02), but also to social and educational activities. Acc/2899/03 contains a large quantity of information relating to the latter. In the main the records date from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1970's, although there is a sizeable amount of earlier material, and a small amount for later years

This series consists of 45 deeds, leases and licences to sublet company land, particularly for the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, Blandford Square, Circus Road, Loudoun Road, Marlborough Hill, Wellington Road in St. Marylebone and Alexandra Road and Broadhurst Gardens in Hampstead. The majority of the deeds contain plans.
