Records of the Exploring Living Memory project, organised by the London History Workshop Centre. This collection contains files relating to the administration and organisation of the Exploring Living Memory workshops, conferences and exhibitions together with copies of images and sample sections of text used in the displays of participating groups and individuals. Working papers and correspondence of Sir John Henry Gaddum. The scientific material in the collection centres on a run of student and laboratory notebooks for 1922-1965, together with files of notes and calculations on biological assay and other topics. Further papers concentrate on Gaddum's teaching and publications in the form of lecture scripts, typescripts of articles and related correspondence. Material on his administrative work includes correspondence on conferences and organizations, with some Royal Society papers, but also Physiological Society letters, 1936-1941. Non-paper records such as slides and personal souvenirs are also preserved.

This collection mainly consists of personalia including educational certificates, school reports, examination papers, and notebooks of William Joseph George Hands' mathematical studies at Cambridge. It includes a small amount of ephemera relating to the Board of Education Exhibition which took place in connection with the Imperial Education Conference, 1923 and to the activities of the International Educational Society. Also included are a paper by Hands on 'A simplified curriculum based on occupations', 1925, and papers on experiments with English composition at St Mary's Boys' School, Weymouth and with the topical treatment of history and geography at S. Aldhelm's Girls' School, Branksome, c.1910.

Papers relating to HMS Mercury consisting of manuscripts relating to the history of signalling, 1781 to 1914. The printed part of the original collection, also to 1914, is in the Library. The manuscripts include sixteen late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century signal books; a book of codes for use with an electric telegraph, 1855; correspondence concerning the rules for the use of wireless telegraphy, 1893; correspondence and photographs relating to the development of communication by flashing signals, 1861 to 1893, 1904; a collection of annual reports on the Naval Pigeon Service, 1903 to 1908; proposed Forming, Disposing and Stationing Signals, 1890 and 1892; correspondence on Equal and Unequal speed manoeuvres, 1891 to 1892, and on Battle Tactic Signals, 1901. Foremost among the correspondents on these and other subjects is the first Superintendent of the Signal School, Admiral A.F. Everett (1868-1938).

Papers relating to an international anti-Jewish congress in Belgium, [1930s], comprise details of the congress, entitled Union Antijudaique Universelle, papers concern the secrecy of the event, Muslims amongst the participants, earlier conferences of this sort and a permanent office for the Union Antijudaique Universelle in case of a new Jewish war.

Records relating to the International Bookfair of Radical Black and Third World Books, including original programmes, stationery, correspondence and notes from members of The Alliance and from artists and those who attended the conferences. Also listings of families and individuals who provided accommodation for artists and rotas for the staffing of the Fairs.

The programmes are an excellent resource for information about the social and political issues that were of concern to Black people living in London in the 1980s and 1990s. They show the international links and connections between individuals of different artistic disciplines.

The development of the organisation and it's influence on diverse groups in the community are well documented in the correspondence and minutes; LMA/4462/M/01 and 02.

The photographs are both formal and informal. They show the Fair in action and special guests and artists performing or speaking at the different events. One album was put together by a participant as a gift to the Huntleys.

The press cuttings give valuable information on how the Fairs were being received by the Black community and others in London and internationally. There is an exclusive interview with Sonia Sanchez and an article by Margaret Busby which gives an historical overview of the Fair.
