Papers of the Medico-Botanical Society of London, 1815-1852, including correspondence letters and administrative papers of the Society, primarily relating to membership issues. In addition there are papers of John Frost (1803-1840), MS.7691 (4 items), relating either to botanical interests or the Medico-Botanical Society .

Manuscript volume, apparently dating from 1425, containing a dictionary of medical terms and other treatises. Marginal comments throughout, 16th-17th century, including medicinal recipes, the entries frequently stating the name of the person who found them beneficial and the date. The fly-leaf bears text of theological content in a 13th-century script.

Letters and papers of James Ormiston McWilliam, 1839-1862. The letters to McWilliam show the interest generated by his investigations into contagious diseases such as yellow fever, and his subsequent official reports. Other contemporary naval issues form a major part of the subject-matter, especially the working conditions and status of assistant surgeons, on whose behalf McWilliam campaigned.

Letter from Mordaunt Martin of 'Burnham' to Dr [John Coakley] Lettsom, Sambrook House, London, 8 Mar 1801. Stating that he has despatched to Lettsom a parcel of mangelwurzel seeds. Explaining that he was prevented from answering Lettsom's letter of 3 Jan by an attack of gallstones, since relieved by pills of soap and rhubarb. Discussing the 'Brown Bread Act' [probably 41 Geo.3.c.16] to which, he says, Lettsom was in some degree accessory; quoting Lettsom and Horne Tooke on the Act; Martin prefers brown bread for his breakfast, using his own wheat 'sifted in the coarsest hair sieve', but deprecates the 'indiscriminate use of it'. Attacking at length the Potato Premium Bill, which had just been rejected, according to 'the paper of this night'; claiming that such a bill would force by premiums an unnatural produce on land which the occupiers could use for more profitable crops. Adding that his and Lettsom's 'hearts will beat in unison' on reading pages 109-110 of the 2nd edition of [Robert] Fellowes's Christian Philosophy [1799].

Papers of Jean Nicholas Marjolin and his son René Marjolin, 1849-1894, including notes of Jean Nicolas Marjolin's lectures, by a medical student; letters from René Marjolin to his friend Edmond Dascols relating mainly to personal affairs, and the health of the Dascols family (with advice on cholera and other maladies) and letters from Paris at the time of the siege and the Commune, 1870-1871, when René Marjolin was active in treating the wounded prior to his arrest as a Bonapartist agent.

Papers, 1780s-1790s, largely of Captain Francis Light, including several hundred Malay letters, primarily letters received by Light and his business partner, Captain James Scott, from rulers and dignitaries of the Malay Sultanates.

The letters cover the history of relations, negotiations and conflicts between Light, the rulers of Kedah and the Governor General in Bengal leading up to and including the settlement of Penang in 1786 and the armed conflict of 1791. There are also letters dealing with business affairs between Light and Malay nobles such as the purchase, shipment and sale of commodities, ammunition, slaves and opium, and the maintenance of good political and economic neighbourly relations; letters from the Sultanate of Selangor; letters from royal merchants at the Malay courts; and letters concerning trade from various rulers and nobles in the Peninsula and Sumatra, especially from Aceh, Asahan and other North-Sumatran states.

In addition, the collection contains several dozen letters and documents from the same period relating to Bencoolen (Benkulen) and the West Sumatran Presidency, which are unrelated to Light.

Personal papers and correspondence of John Coakley Lettsom, 1766-1812, including medical papers and pamphlets by Lettsom, newspaper cuttings relating to him, or subjects that interested him. Letters from various correspondents, mainly from the medical profession. The papers reflect his primary interests in 'Quacks and Quackery', clinical medicine, pathology, materia medica, variolation and vaccination. Many relate to the business of the Medical Society of London, of which Lettsom was President. There is also a fragment of an autobiography of his life as a as a student, MS.3245.

Recipe books of Philadelphia Lee, [1780].

Papers, 1940-1987 (some undated), of J Alfred Lee, largely relating to professional matters, comprising notebooks, files, slides and photographs, 1940-[1987], some of which are labelled and relate to Lee's publications, including various editions of A Synopsis of Anaesthesia, containing notes, bibliographical references, and inserts including press cuttings, from sources such as the British Medical Journal and The Lancet, including entries on regional analgesia, general anaesthesia, professional techniques, anaesthetic drugs, and the history of anaesthesia; notebook containing tabulated anaesthetic records, 1944; notebook containing meeting agendas and minutes, 1946-1949, of various bodies, including Southend Hospital; miscellaneous correspondence, 1957-1987, the correspondents including various other anaesthetists, on subjects including the history of anaesthesia, publications on anaesthesia including Lee's Synopsis, and also including some printed material on professional techniques.

Other records comprise printed booklets, articles, brochures, leaflets, diagrams and typescripts, 1939-1976, on subjects in anaesthetics including equipment (including apparatus produced by A Charles King Ltd and the British Oxygen Company Ltd), the development of anaesthetic techniques and drugs, and the history of anaesthesia and eminent anaesthetists including printed Inventory of the A Charles King Collection of early anaesthetic apparatus present to the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland by A Charles King March 6th 1953; copies of the K Bryn Thomas's article, 'The A Charles King Collection of early anaesthetic apparatus', Anaesthesia, vol xxv, no 4 (Oct 1970); and various British Standards, 1950-1970, on anaesthetic and other medical equipment.

Papers of the Sir Francis Avery Jones, 1934-1998, comprised of four main sections: Personal items, including memorabilia and photographs. Correspondence relating to Avery Jones' various areas of interest, including published letters. Publications and reviews, mostly written by Avery Jones but also including articles by other people which he gathered together throughout his career. Items relating to Societies and Institutions which Avery Jones was involved with in various capacities.

Essays by Peter Johnston Johnston-Saint, c 1927-1938, including 'The Herbal. The fore-runner of the pharmacopoeia in ancient and modern times', 'Healing Saints. A brief account of some of the Healing Saints to be found in Brittany' and 'Historical View of the Theory of Spontaneous Generation'.

The collection comprises correspondence, writings and administrative material relating to the Jenner family, particularly Dr. Edward Jenner (pioneer of smallpox vaccination) and the associated Black and Davies families, 1680-1877.

The material on Edward Jenner includes papers relating to organisations set up in the aftermath of his vaccination discoveries: the National Vaccine Establishment, the Royal Jennerian Society and the London Vaccine Institution.

Patient files and papers relating to the CUTLASS (Clinical and Cost Utility of the Latest Antipsychotics in Severe Schizophrenia) Study, [1999-2001]. Administrative material includes: blank forms for patient information used in the study; hospital psychiatric and non-psychiatric manuals; articles and newsletters on antipsychotics and related subjects, rating criteria for levels of psychosis; and minutes and memoranda from CUTLASS committee meetings.

Recipe and account book with ownership inscription of Thomas Brigstocke Humphreys, Portmadoc, 1859. The book has later been used to accommodate newspaper cuttings (including several relating to members of the Humphreys and Brigstocke families, among them H. Humphreys of Aberystwyth, also a chemist, and various Humphreys in Llanelli) and ephemera. The latter relate to a wide variety of chemists' firms, chiefly in London; these include Corbyn and Co. (see MSS. 5435-5460).

Records of Howards and Sons Ltd, manufacturers of pharmaceutical chemicals, 1902-1956. Comprising documents in English, French, German and Dutch, the collection reflects the company's active involvement in the world quinine market, especially in the years immediately following World War I (1918-1920), as well as its membership of the Association of Quinine Manufacturers in Allied Countries and the Quinine Manufacturers' Association at that time.

Notes and extracts on vegetable materia medica, botany, etc. (with the exception of MS.2882, which deals with British insects, and MS.7961 which consists of general correspondence). The plants discussed include species from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Many of the pieces are drafts of lectures (to bodies such as the Royal Botanic Society) or of papers later published in journals such as the Pharmaceutical Journal, Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association, etc. Some items include inserted correspondence.

Papers of Samuel Holland, 1740, comprising four volumes of manuscript notes from Charles Alston's lectures on 'Materia Medica'. The first volume is titled Dr Alston's Lectures, 1740. The other volumes are: Volume 1 containing notes on minerals, lead, silver, copper, iron, tin, alumen, borax and vitriolum, 1740; Volume 3 containing notes on vegetables, roots, bark, leaves and flowers, 1740; Volume 4 containing notes on fruits, seeds, juices, and animals, 1740.

This small but important collection is concerned with the research and development of penicillin. Heatley's laboratory notebooks (A.1-3), October 1939-June 1941, and sketches and diagrams of apparatus, 1941 (C. 1-5) form the core of the collection. The famous experiment of 25 May 1941 on the 'Curative Effect of Penicillin' on mice is recorded in notebook A.2. There are also diary entries, narratives and explanatory notes, some prepared by Heatley expressly for the collection. The correspondence and reports exchanged between Heatley and Florey (section D.) is a set of photocopies, included to provide a complete account of the collaboration between the two on the penicillin project.

Harrods Pharmacy Department registers of prescriptions dispensed daily, Jul 1935-Jan 1977. There are gaps in the sequence between July 1936 and September 1938 and between December 1943 and April 1946, where the relevant registers were found to be missing on transfer to the Wellcome Archive.

Notebooks of William Harrison containing notes on the practice of physic, pharmacy, midwifery, varia and botany, materia medica, toxicology and chemistry, [1852].

Notebooks of Daniel Hanbury containing copy out-letters, lecture and research notes and abstracts of published works on materia medica, 1842-1875. Much of this material was generated by Hanbury's interest in exotic drugs, resulting in his magnum opus Pharmacographia. His correspondence was consequently wide-ranging, and included letters to scientific colleagues, commercial contacts and other correspondents in many parts of the world.

Accounts for medicines supplied by Hallifax as Royal Apothecary to George, Prince of Wales (afterwards King George IV) and to the Prince of Wales' household. Both sets of accounts bear the signatures (on examination and approval) of Sir Richard Jebb, physician to the Prince, and Charles Fitzroy, 1st Baron Southampton, groom of the stole to the Prince. With signatures (on receipt of payment) of Robert Hallifax.

Papers of Reginald Hale-White chiefly relating to the Fellowship for Freedom in Medicine, including correspondence; address at the Tunbridge Wells meeting of the Fellowship for Freedom in Medicine, Apr 1953; typescript drafts of reports; press-releases and printed Bulletins of the Fellowship for Freedom in Medicine, 1948-1972 (some were added to the collection by Hale-White's widow after his death). Also comprises material about his other medical interests including correspondence and other papers about the Government proposal to ban the manufacture and import of heroin in the United Kingdom, and about Hale-White's participation in opposing the ban, 1955-1956; copies of letters from Hale-White to the Daily Telegraph and the British Medical Journal, 1958-1967 and typescripts of speeches and lectures given by Hale-White, some annotated by him in manuscript.

The records relate to proprietorship of the recipe for "Doctor Johnson's Golden Ointment" including legal documents and legal case papers; and records relating to the manufacture and sale of the ointment including financial accounts, order books, correspondence, sales summaries, testimonials, advertising, legislation involving patent medicines and history of the ointment. Also various family and estate records.

Lecture notes and other papers of Sir Hermann Gollancz including notes from lectures on the philosophy of mind, given by George Croom Robertson (1842-1892) at University College, London; notes from lectures at University College, London, comprising lectures on applied mathematics by William Kingdom Clifford (1845-1879), and on physics by George Carey Foster. Also included are notes on the history of the Jews in Sicily; notes on aspects of Jewish religion and theology. Signature inside the front cover, 'H Gollancz, Jews' College' and medical prescriptions written for Sir Hermann Gollancz, and miscellaneous medical ephemera.

Widdows Golding collection comprising a commonplace book containing records of cases at the London Hospital about the year 1786, including notes on operations performed by Richard Grindall, Henry Thompson, George Neale, and other surgeons; notes on surgery, midwifery and anatomy. (The anatomical notes are illustrated by fine water-colour drawings). 'A concise account of an epidemic fever which was in the united parishes of Newnam, Mongwell, Nufhill and Gray's in the year 1788' and notes on medicine. At the end is a large collection of receipts.

Two large manuscripts of works by Jean Julien Giberti, apparently prepared for publication entitled "Traitè des médicamens" and "Traité de l'hygiène".

Anonymous student's lecture notes, the manuscripts, written largely in the same hand, have been assigned to Estienne Louis Geoffroy. Produced in Paris, [1760].

Papers of William Gelder including letters from Gelder to his parents in Wakefield, while a dispensing and visiting assistant to [R Lucie] Reed, surgeon, at Whitechapel Road, London, Mar-Nov 1832, and while in Edinburgh in the employ of Mr Cope, a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist and druggist, Mar-Aug 1834. Notebook begun by Gelder in Edinburgh in 1834, and continued on a tour through Lancashire, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Wales in 1835, and in trade in Yorkshire, 1836-1837. Containing verses, commonplaces, orders for medicines and other goods, and miscellaneous notes. Signature inside front cover, 'William Gelder, Apothecaries' Hall, Edinbro, 1834.' On the rear end-papers is a coloured engraving of Apothecaries Hall.

Working papers and correspondence of Sir John Henry Gaddum. The scientific material in the collection centres on a run of student and laboratory notebooks for 1922-1965, together with files of notes and calculations on biological assay and other topics. Further papers concentrate on Gaddum's teaching and publications in the form of lecture scripts, typescripts of articles and related correspondence. Material on his administrative work includes correspondence on conferences and organizations, with some Royal Society papers, but also Physiological Society letters, 1936-1941. Non-paper records such as slides and personal souvenirs are also preserved.

Papers of John Gaddum including correspondence [1954]-1964; Cambridge Biochemistry Laboratory journals 1923-1930; reprints and photographs. These extant papers by no means reflect the whole of Gaddum's career. They date mostly from [1957]-1964, when he was Director of the Agricultural Research Council Institute of Animal Physiology at Babraham, Cambridge.
