Records of Cheap Ward, Corporation of London. The records comprise minutes, rate assessments and accounts, presentments, papers of the volunteer association and other administrative papers. They were catalogued by members of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

The archive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy provides a comprehensive record of its activities and development, dating back to its foundation - with two press cuttings books of the 1894 'massage scandals' (P.1), and Council minutes from 1894 onwards (B.1). The core of the collection is formed by complete runs of minute books for the various committees. There are no committee working papers or correspondence files other than those bound with the minutes. Papers relating to education and examination including minutes for all the major committees and sub-committees (C.1), and material relating to the actual administration of examinations: syllabuses, examination papers, result books and reports (C.2). Records relating to membership including membership registers 1895-1975, published lists of members 1920-1986 and minutes and registers of the fund and prize committees 1949-1957 (D). Records of some branches and special interest groups within the CSP can be found in section J.

Material relating to protecting and improving the status of its members within the medical profession can be found in section F, especially in connection with the debates on the place of physiotherapy within the NHS - training, conditions of service and its existence as a profession distinct from others such as occupational therapy. These topics are also discussed in publications (N). Other publications illustrate specific physiotherapy and lifting techniques and advertise physiotherapy as a career. Section P contains 'historical' material relating to the early years of the Society: the 'massage scandal' press cuttings, and correspondence re the Harley Institute massage school 1912-1914. Section P also contains material relating to the writing of the Society's commissioned histories, and personal papers and reminiscences, including a group of papers and photographs relating to Olive Guthrie-Smith and the Swedish Institute, (later St Mary's Hospital School of Physiotherapy), 1904-1939. There is a substantial photograph collection (Q.1), dating from 1900-1980, illustrating many aspects of the Society's work as well as specific treatments and hospital departments. Papers, 1798-1923, of Sir Edwin Chadwick. Over half of the collection consists of correspondence dating from around 1820, but most of the letters were written after 1834. Some of the earliest papers in the collection are notes on the police. There are papers relating to Chadwick's service as Secretary of the Poor Law Commission, including material on his troubled relationship with the Poor Law Commissioners and his unsuccessful attempts to be made a Commissioner. There is a good deal of material on public health and sanitation. There are also drafts and notes for many of his published writings to do with the reform of central and local government and military training and education.

Records of Castle Baynard Ward, Corporation of London. The records comprise wardmote and committee minutes and financial accounts. They were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff at various dates.

The archive consists of a typescript autobiography by Cartland and a pamphlet about her publications. The autobiography describes her work as a campaigner and in local government as well as her work as a romantic novelist. It includes accounts of her work to provide wartime brides with white wedding dresses and her campaigns to enable traveller children to attend school. She also writes about her romances, marriages and social life.

Papers of H V Carter including correspondence of Carter and of members of his family; Carter's journals, 1848-1862; 'Reflections' by H V Carter on his personal and professional development, and on his religious life as a Dissenter and wills, estate and other financial papers.

Papers of Ann Carlton, primarily relating to her work as Local Government Officer for the Labour Party between 1967 and 1974. There are also some papers from the late 1950s and early-mid 1960s when Michael Ward and later Joan Bourne were Local Government Officer. The collection primarily consists of papers from various groups and committees Carlton and her predecessors were involved with, particularly the Labour Party Home Policy sub-committees relating to local government, which the Local Government Officer was Secretary of. These were the Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1959-1960 and 1963-1964), the Regional and Local Government Advisory Committee (papers from 1965-1970), and the Regional and Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1970-1971). Carlton was also Secretary for the Association of Municipal Corporations Labour Group (papers from 1963-1973). Other papers relate to a Study Group on the Maud Report on the Management of Local Government (papers from 1964 and 1967), the Association of Education Committees and its future (papers from 1973-1974), and the reorganisation of local authority associations (papers from 1973). There are also copies of papers circulated to Labour groups from 1968-1972, and correspondence and press cuttings relating to Ann Carlton's work.

The papers have a particular focus on proposals to reorganise local government in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impact of this on local authority associations. The topics of housing and town planning, local government conferences and local elections also feature heavily.
