Harvey's papers, 1602-40, consist of offical and legal documents, include his diploma of DM from the University of Padua, 1602; Lease to Harvey of lands called Buckholte, in Kent, 1611; Letters patent of Charles I under the Great Seal, granting to Harvey a general pardon, 1625/26, and annuities of £50 per annum, 1631, £300 per annum, 1637, £100 per annum, 1639, and £200 and £100 per annum, 1640.

Sir Henry Head's papers, 1891-1909, consist of his casebooks of patients with Herpes Zoster, with sketches and photographs, chiefly from Head's work at the London Hospital, 1891-1909, and his casebooks of patients with various diseases, with sketches and charts, from his work at the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Heart and Lungs, Victoria Park, 1894.

Medical log of the slave-ship LORD STANLEY, kept by Christopher Bowes the ship's surgeon between 23 March-26 July 1792. The ship traded between the African coast and the Isle of Grenada, West Indies. Of the 389 slaves on board, 16 died. The log gives the daily sick rate and there are brief notes of the cases and treatment.

At the end of the manuscript, Christopher Bowes states it is a "just and true journal" which he then presents to Custom House, at St George, Grenada in 1792. This is witnessed and signed by George Ferguson [Possibly George Ferguson, Governor of Tobago c1781]. The next page of the volume contains a statement signed by George Ferguson, saying that this is a "true copy of the original journal", and is dated September 5th 1792. Therefore it is likely that this manuscript is a copy of the original journal, which was perhaps retained in Grenada.

At the front of the volume is a letter to Arthur Bowes Elliot (grandson of Christopher Bowes) dated 5th October 1911, from Sir Ronald Ross (FRCS) 1857-1932, regarding the contents of the volume, and the diseases the slaves were suffering from.

Correspondence, diaries and other papers of Sir Alfred Charles Glyn Egerton, including some personal papers but largely relating to The Royal Society and particularly to wartime activities and post-war research needs in Britain. The diaries form an almost complete record of Egerton's career during the period 1943-1959. Earlier diaries date back to 1917 and the period 1929-1930, but for the most part they relate to the period 1938-1941.

The correspondence of Sir John Frederick William Herschel, comprising three main groups of documents:
The first series comprises 19 volumes of manuscript letters sent to Herschel, with drafts of his replies (Ref: HS 1-19).

The second series comprises 16 volumes of copy letters from Herschel (Ref: HS 20-25). These are arranged in chronological order and are apparently constructed from Herschel's original letters brought together by a son, Col. John Herschel R.E., for a proposed biography and then returned to their original owners. The biography was never produced. There is some duplication between these versions of finished letters and the rough versions of the same in HS 1-19.
The third series comprises five boxes of unbound manuscript letters, copy books and listings (Ref: HS 25-28) in which there appears information on the copying project, and groups of original letters on particular topics, such as Herschel's involvement in W H F Talbot's photography patent disputes.

Working papers and correspondence of Sir John Henry Gaddum. The scientific material in the collection centres on a run of student and laboratory notebooks for 1922-1965, together with files of notes and calculations on biological assay and other topics. Further papers concentrate on Gaddum's teaching and publications in the form of lecture scripts, typescripts of articles and related correspondence. Material on his administrative work includes correspondence on conferences and organizations, with some Royal Society papers, but also Physiological Society letters, 1936-1941. Non-paper records such as slides and personal souvenirs are also preserved.

Some correspondence, papers, notebooks and publications of Sir James Hopwood Jeans. Early manuscripts in the series relate to Jean's education at Trinity College, Cambridge, in the form of early lecture notebooks, largely on mathematical topics. A collection of letters, 1901-1907, documents his treatment for tuberculosis at Ringwood Sanatorium, where he completed work on the theory of gases; correspondents included G H Hardy and Adam Sedgewick among others. Jean's engagements in popularizing science are represented by proofs and typescript of lectures and essays, especially those written for the BBC, 1934-1935, together with associated letters and press cuttings. The series contains collections of offprints, reprints, and extracts of published works by Jeans and others, notably from the Philosophical Transactions and the Philosophical Magazine.

The working drawings of John Smeaton, civil engineer. They illustrate his researches on waterwheels and applied mechanics, and the relative efficiency of overshot as opposed to undershot wheels. With supplementary engravings and manuscript notes.

The correspondence of Sir John William Lubbock, providing information on a wide range of Lubbock's contemporaries, not exclusively in the field of science. The largest collections of scientific letters are from George Biddell Airy (113 letters), John George Children (128 letters), Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquis of Northampton (98 letters), G P D de Pontecoulant (67 letters) and William Whewell (87 letters). There are smaller but no less important groups of letters from Charles Babbage, Francis Baily, Francis Beaufort, Charles Darwin, John Couch Adams, J F W Herschel, Baden Powell and W H F Talbot.

Papers of John Canton.

Reports on scientific papers submitted for publication to the Royal Society from 1832 to date (Peer Review). The referees were appointed to advise the Committee of Papers, and were drawn from appropriate subject disciplines within the Fellowship. Referees Reports vary in content between terse notes recommending acceptance or rejection to long monographs devoted to the subject under review. Much of their interest derives from the comment of one scientist on the work of another, for example Michael Faraday on J P Joule (RR.3.154,158) or Sir Oliver Lodge on Ernest Rutherford (RR.13.106).

The papers are extensive but by no means comprehensive. There is no personal or biographical material and very little record of Thompson's research. On the other hand his contributions to international science and football are extensively documented. There is a very full record of Thompson's Foreign Secretaryship of the Royal Society and his organisation of the European chemical conferences (EUCHEM) and substantial documentation of his work for ICSU and IUPAC, including the Commission on Molecular Spectroscopy and the Triple Commission on Spectroscopy. Thompson's contributions to international relations were not limited to science (or football) and he kept detailed records of his Chairmanship from 1972 of the Great Britain - China Committee (later Great Britain - China Centre). The football papers are substantial, particularly for the last decade of Thompson's life, and thus there is full documentation of his Chairmanship of the Football Association and of the many problems facing football at that time, including hooliganism amongst its supporters.

The collection mainly consists of a set of Isabel Fry's personal diaries and notebooks dating from 1878-1958. These are supplemented by letters to her friend Eugénie Dubois, c1930-1958, and a few publications and photographs. The diaries reflect all aspects of her life and career including her teaching activities and educational ideas; her preoccupations with political and social affairs, including political reform and emancipation in the East and in Turkey and Persia; her friendships with liberal intellectuals; and her involvement with anti-militarist movements, slum clearance, socialism and feminism. Also included are details of her relationship with her family, friends and their wider social circle.

Case for the opinion of counsel in the matter of the Incorporated Association of Headmasters and of the disciplinary powers exerciseable by schoolmasters over their pupils: as to the limits of a headmaster's authority in a secondary school over pupils out of school time and off school premises, 1926.

Papers of Margherita Rendal relating to two research projects, namely:'Graduate Administration in Local Education Authorities', 1965-1968, including material relating to project administration; correspondence and memoranda; interim and final reports; sample questionnaires; information about the survey program used to analyse the data; coding lists; sample punch cards. Also included is a file of correspondence and papers relating to The Committee on the Management and Staffing of Local Government (the Mallaby Committee), 1965. 'Survey for UNESCO of Courses and Research in Political Science, Law and Related Disciplines Concerned with the Role and Status of Women', 1979-1982, mainly comprising a series of individual folders for over seventy different countries or regions containing published and unpublished material relating to women's studies and the women's movement in each area; correspondence with local contacts in educational institutions and women's organisations; some answers to a questionnaire; and research summaries. Also included are some general publications and memoranda relating to UNESCO; card indexes of local contacts; and drafts of the final report. Also included are a small number of papers relating to the Institute of Education Department of Educational Administration in the 1970s, especially relating to a course run jointly with the London Business School on 'Management in the Education Service'; and circular letters of the Education in Human Rights Network, 1988. There is also a file relating to the Confederation for the Advancement of State Education, 1960s and a small amount of material concerning a study of educational administration in Derbyshire, 1967.

Fellowship certificates of Fellows, Honorary Corresponding Members and Life Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society, 1840-1988. The certificates contain the following information: names of proposers, dates candidates were proposed and elected and details about the candidate including place of residence, description and on occasion their qualifications for becoming a Fellow.

Professor Spurgeon's papers comprise mainly notes, 1895-1912, taken at lectures attended as an undergraduate and afterwards, and teaching notes and course syllabuses, 1901-1927, relating to lectures given at Bedford College and elsewhere, including for London County Council evening classes. She kept two volumes of notes on the students she taught at Bedford College, and one letter survives (PP7/1/3/8) expressing appreciation for her teaching. There are papers relating to her research in English literature, including on Chaucer, mysticism, Ruskin, Shakespeare and Keats, [c.1900]-1933, and published copies of her works, 1901-1930, some with annotations. She collected newspaper cuttings on literature and her own work, and on current affairs, including feminism and women's suffrage and the First World War. There are papers relating to her work on international exchange of information about education, particularly for women, including her presidency of the International Federation of University Women, 1920-1924, and the British Federation's establishment of Crosby Hall International Hall of Residence, 1921-1929. There is one file of letters, cards and notes found in her books, 1889-1936, including letters from and to Frederick James Furnivall, founder of the Early English Text Society, Chaucer Society, Ballad Society, New Shakespeare Society, etc, and letters and cards from Edmund Gosse, Emile Legouis, Professor of English Literature at the Sorbonne, and George Heynes Radford (later Sir George Radford, Labour M.P. for East Islington). Two files of letters from CS to her aunt Mrs E. Harvey 1898-9, 1905-1914, were added to the papers in 1964. There is also a typed copy of Professor Spurgeon's will and bequest to Bedford College, 1936.

Records of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' External Affairs Committee, 1932-1950, comprising correspondence and related papers covering a wide variety of issues reflecting the Committee's broad terms of reference, for example: maternity hospitals, midwifery, female circumcision, pregnancy in wartime, maternal mortality and nutrition in pregnancy. It should be noted however, that much of the material included in the series appears to have been placed here in error simply because it relates to the external affairs of the College. As well as containing records of the External Affairs Committee, this fonds also has records related to the general external affairs of the college. Some of these records are concerned with obstetrics and gynaecology during the period of the Second World War.
