'... my attempt at a translation of the great words "ai Giovanni" is as nearly complete as you expected it to be by this time if I did undertake it.' 'Have you seen the truly chivalrous and bortherly defence of Byron by Martin Tupper? Read and rejoice. There is a communion of spirits between the great, in life or death.' The remainder of the letter comprises 'genealogical information'.

Papers of Daniel Webster, 1852, comprise a letter to the Secretary of State of Pennsylvania. The letter contains notification of the despatch of 'on copy of the "United States Official Register" for the year 1851'.

Papers of Barry Eric Odell Pain, 1907, comprise a letter to Mr Marshall, reluctantly accepting a dinner engagement in Walsall. 'To be perfectly candid, I hate public dinners and am dead sick of being guest-of-the-eveninged'.

Papers of Benjamin Sayer, 1832, comprise a letter to [John Wilson] Croker MP. Covering letter accompanying a copy of Sayer's volume of observations and suggestions regarding income and property taxes.

Papers of Bernard Page Scattergood, 1931 and 1935, comprise two letters to Mr [A Y] Ali notably a covering letter enclosing an off-print [wanting] of part of 'The Scattergoods and the East India Company', co-written by Scattergood [with Sir Richard Carnac Temple and Lavinia M Anstey]; written to Ali in England (5 January 1931) and a covering letter enclosing a copy of the completed book.

Papers of Alfred Hugh Fisher, 1936, comprise a letter to 'Tom' [Sturge Moore]. 'I think you may care to read a note [enclosed] ... of what old F.G. Stephens said to me in 1902 about the batch of sketches [D G] Rossetti gave to [E C] Burne Jones and destroyed on seeing them one day afterwards in Burne Jones' room'.

The archive includes field recordings, papers, drafts of articles, notebooks and a set of index cards from Kenneth A Gourlay's ethnomusicological research on the musical cultures of the Karamojong of Uganda, in Nigeria and in Papua New Guinea.

Comic Book Collection: The first sub-fonds/sub-collection [CB/1] contains mainly British and American comics, graphic annuals and graphic novels. Including many mainstream titles such as, Doctor Who annuals, Batman and Star Trek comics.
The second sub-fonds/sub-collection [CB/2] contains UK, American and European comics, graphic annual, books and newspaper cuttings. The graphic annuals cover the work of over seventy individual artists including Raymond Briggs, Guido Crepax, Will Eisner, P. Craig Russell and Moebius. In addition there are 35 files containing cuttings about comics and comic strips.

Printed topographical map made up of 7 separate sheets (one titled Mayence) glued together showing the border region of France and Germany with approximate centre on Homburg representing approximately 220 miles east-west and 250 miles north-south. The 1918 front line is hand drawn and coloured as are national borders. Enemy airfields housing bomber units are indicated by coloured markers. This map is complementary to JSCSC IF 2/2.

Garnett Collection, mainly comprising railway maps, particularly those produced from 1869 by John Airey, an employee of the Railway Clearing House (RCH), and subsequently by the RCH itself, and also includes Ordnance Survey maps and railway maps produced by the various railway companies; catalogues and research notes by Garnett, including lists of maps prepared by Airey and the RCH, 1869-1960; Macaulay [Zachary] series for Great Britain, Ireland and London, 1851-1908; notes on tramways and railways in Port Talbot area; catalogues of station handbooks, 1851-1956, and railway junction diagrams (the Airey and RCH maps, station handbooks and junction diagrams were used to determine ownership of stations and junctions for commercial purposes).

Research notes and photographs relating to Railway structures by Stuart Kear (9 vols); typescript of Chronology of the construction of Britain's railways, 1856-1922 by Leslie James; research notes by John Palmer on 19th century railway periodicals and the Eastern Counties Railway in its formative years; research notebooks and papers of Harold Vernon Borley on the history of railways in London, used for his Chronology of London railways (Railway and Canal Historical Society, Oakham, 1982).

Locomotive and General Railway Collection, featuring several thousand photographs (photographer unknown) of British locomotives, particularly steam trains, 1920s-1970s.

Wookey Collection, comprising several thousand photographs of British railway stations and signal boxes.

Mowat Collection (of Professor Charles Loch Mowat, 1911-c1969), comprising 2500 photographs in albums of railway scenes, 1926-1969 (mostly 1942-1969, with a few before 1924). These are mostly of small and medium sized railway stations (trains are generally incidental), covering most of the United Kingdom, with particular emphasis on the GWR and Wales, with coverage of Somerset and Dorset, Midland and South Western Junction, Lincolnshire, Midland Railway in the West Country, Great Eastern, Glasgow and Edinburgh Suburban, Bristol Suburban, Ireland, and narrow gauge lines in the UK such as Ffestiniog, Penrhyn, Bishop's Castle and Ditton's Prior. He also covered south east of Manchester in 1962, including the Hayfield, Macclesfield, Buxton (London North Western and Midland) and North Staffordshire lines. The collection also includes Mowat's index to his photographs and 14 notebooks containing track diagrams and notes on the stations he photographed, c 1920-1969.

Letter from Wiliam Edward Hickson of 20 West Smithfield, [London] to Francis Place, 5 Jan [1832]. '... I read ... with great surprise that you participate in the opinion of most of the economists that a change in the distribution of property would not improve the condition of the great mass of the community. Allow me to draw your attention in order to show how distribution affects production to an article [on 'The Rights of Industry'] written by me ... [for Carpenters Political Magazine]'.

An autograph draft of Place's reply is on the dorse of the first leaf: '... The activity of your pen indicates a desire for reading, observing and thinking, and these in time will prevent you from dogmatically condemning what you do not comprehend, and which it is hardly to be expected you should fully understand. Then too you will cease to attribute to others, notions they do not entertain, and to build theories thereon of your own mistakes. Persevere and in ten years time you will be as wise as you are now foolish, and whatever you may think of this note and the writer now, lay it by 'till that time and then I have no doubt your opinion of both will be correct.' Dated 6 Jan 1832.

Letter from William Henry Rowlestone Jessop of Grove House, St David's, Haverfordwest, [Pembrokeshire] to an unidentified correspondent, 17 Oct 1855. Accompanying a copy of his work on the decimal system: '... it is the first book which embraces the whole System of Money and Measures that has yet appeared ... You will perceive that this system is very superior to that in France [i.e. to the metric system]'.

Letter from Sir Stanley Spencer of 3 Vale Hotel Studios, Hampstead, London to Thomas Sturge Moore, 26 Apr 1926. 'Here at last is the monograph of my works ... The much wanted or unwanted explanation of my pictures will be found in the book of words, so there will be no more trouble now, all is clear at last ... I am doing a big picture of the resurrection ... (18ft x 9ft) and it is going to take years to paint and I love painting it so I am enjoying myself ...'.

Letter from Sir Thomas Phillipps of Oxford to [Edward Duke], 14 Mar 1837. '... my thanks for the kind manner in which you express a wish to see my portion of the Wilts History in print. You will be gratified to hear that I have advanced to page 56 of the 2nd part of Aubreys Wilts [John Aubrey Natural History of Wiltshire] ... & have this last week collected from the stores of Bodley some information which I did not before possess'. Mentioning the expense of publication and the difficulty of selling works of local history. 'I am not so rich as our mutual and valuable friend Sir Richard Hoare to be able to spend & lose 2000 per annum for the mere pleasure of illustrating the History of Wiltshire. At the same time I have no wish to make it a profitable speculation for myself.' Saying that he is happy to purchase a copy of Duke's book [probably Prolusiones historicae (1837)].

Letter from Charles Jones of 16 Whittall Street, Birmingham to Thomas Attwood, 12 Apr 1841. Covering letter to a copy of Jones's pamphlet Letter to Charles Wood, Esq. M.P. '... lately written on the currency'. He warns Attwood: 'I fear you will not find Birmingham either more happy or more prosperous than when you left it although it continues to increase in the external signs of both'.

Letter from William Scott of 14 White Conduit Grove, Islington, [London] to Joseph Hume MP of Bryanstone Square, [London], 28 Dec 1836. Covering letter to a copy of An Address to the People of Scotland ... [a work on the human constitution and scriptural education], written by the phrenologist George Combe, a relative of Scott's. Scott describes the author as a tradesman living in Edinburgh, of 'radical views and reforming temper'. Autograph, with signature. Annotated in Hume's hand: 'Recd & ansd 6 Jnry 1837'.

Letter from John Ashton Yates of Bryanston Square, London to his brother James Yates of Bagdale, Whitby, 19 Aug 1843. Describing his family's journey from Whitby to London and the visits they made en route. 'The second night we slept at Rugby and saw the 500 boys at their desks'.
