This collection consists of the diaries of two members of the Scott Turner family, the widow of Major Henry Scott Turner and her youngest son Cecil. Mrs. Turner's diaries cover the years 1885 to 1888 and record social engagements, domestic incidents and local events. Her daily routine is highlighted by visits, walks and outings to church, parties, and occasionally the theatre. She mentions friends and neighbours by name. The activities of her sons are prominent, but she appears to reserve her deepest affection for Cecil, her youngest. She rarely records her innermost feelings in the diaries, and allows her sons to write up entries. In the first diary she writes "End of 1885 which has had its troubles-tho' they may not be recorded here" (ACC/1385/001a). Events of national interest are only noted in passing, for example the Queen's jubilee celebrations in 1887 and the death of the German Emperor on 9 March 1888. The diaries provide a glimpse into the day to day existence, at times dull and humdrum, of a middle class woman of the late Victorian era.

After an education at Rugby and Oxford, Cecil Turner became a solicitor in London where his uncle Harcourt was a partner in the firm of M and H Turner, 22 Sackville Street, Piccadilly (ref. Law list, 1889). A letter dated 1911 found in one of the diaries is addressed to M C S Turner Esquire, 199, Piccadilly (ACC/1385/039, 31 December). For the most part Cecil only mentions his work briefly, with an occasional reference to a law suit or other business. His diaries are a record of his daily activities for 59 years, from the age of 27 to that of 85. They contain accounts of social engagements, particularly outings to the theatre and art galleries, visits to and from friends and relations, the state of the weather, his health, and domestic incidents. He made many visits, both at home and abroad, including voyages to South Africa where his soldier brother Henry was killed in 1899. He had many friends among the gentry and spent holidays shooting, walking and bicycling and attended country house parties. In his later years he became a convert to the Roman Catholic faith and his diaries reflect the great comfort he gained from this. As the years pass he is increasingly reminded of mortality and, with the death of his sister-in-law Dora in 1946, he is the last member of his immediate family left alive. Although the diaries comment on outside events, such as the progress of the two world wars, they are essentially the personal record of a professional gentleman, reflecting the minutiae of middle-class life in a rapidly changing world.

Manuscript volume containing a treatise by Johs Frédéric Schrader, [1820], entitled 'De la Police en Général, ou, Coup d'oeil rapide sur les différens systèmes des principales Nations de l'Europe', describing the efficiency of the police in the main European countries. The title maintains that Schrader wrote the treatise for the King of England (George III or IV). Schrader is also said to be the author of a work entitled 'Considérations politiques dans l'Etat de Allemagne en 1808'.

Records of the School Mistresses and Governesses Benevolent Institution. This collection contains records relating to the administration of the Institution which provide a comprehensive resource for researching the history of the Institution: its functions, buildings and achievements. For example, the records include a complete set of minutes for the Board of Management for 1843-1979, and a richly evocative set of secretary's letter books for 1846-1849.

The collection also contains records of the individuals that benefited from the accommodation, annuities and temporary assistance offered by the Institution. These records are of use to family historians or for those researching the social history of governesses, women teachers at independent schools, charities, and the care of aged women. They include, for instance, a set of candidate lists which record the personal circumstances of retired or needy governesses applying for annuities for 1924-1938.

Although based in London and Kent, the Institution assisted British governesses throughout the UK and Europe. There are a few instances where governesses stationed further afield were also assisted.

Microfilm of a dossier produced by the Sicherheitsdienst der Reichsführung SS, 1936-1937, the result of an extensive investigation into Carl Schmitt, constitutional theorist of the Weimar Republic and 'Crown Jurist' of the Nazi era. It contains correspondence and reports from former colleagues of Schmitt and others, denouncing his alleged anti-Nazi, pro-Jewish background. Also included is correspondence between the editor of Das Schwarze Korps, and officials within the RFSS SD, in which an anonymous article first appeared (c1936), questioning Schmitt's Nazi credentials.

Papers of the Schlesinger family, 1938-1945, contain official and family correspondence including a long letter from Jewish friends of the family, who managed to survive the war years in Hungary. This is a rare and valuable account of the Hungarian Jewish experience during the Nazi era, containing descriptions of life in hiding, deportations, massacres by Hungarian Nazis and life in Budapest in the immediate postwar years.

A file on Schiller-Szinessy's time at Cambridge comprises printed material, press cuttings, manuscripts, and correspondence of Raphael Loewe, and includes a letter to Schiller-Szinessy from Sir Moses Montefiore, 1883, replying to his ninety-ninth birthday greetings, and an unpublished manuscript by Schiller-Szinessy (in German), 1888, on 'Der Neue Catalog Der Hebraischen Handscriften In Der Bodleiana'. A file on Schiller-Szinessy's contribution to the Jewish press, 1850-1890, includes press cuttings of his articles and typescript notes on his work. A file on Schiller-Szinessy's other publications includes printed copies and press cuttings of his writings from 1845. A file on the marriage, offspring and death of Schiller-Szinessy comprises a letter from H Samuel to Schiller-Szinessy, 1861; papers relating to his marriage, 1863, and other family papers; a photograph of him, 1888; undated photographs of his daughters Henrietta and Eleanor; a photograph, 1963, of his gravestone; cuttings and other printed papers on his death, 1890, including letters of condolence to his wife; notes, cuttings and correspondence, 1962-1968 and undated, of Raphael Loewe on Schiller-Szinessy, including biographical information. A file of correspondence and papers of Raphael Loewe concerning Alfred Solomon Schiller-Szinessy includes a small scrapbook containing poems, 1886-1887 and undated, by Alfred S Schiller-Szinessy; a photocopy of an article by Alfred S Schiller-Szinessy on 'The Testaments of the XII Patriarchs' from The Jewish World, 1887; and two letters, 1962, concerning his education at the Perse School, Cambridge. A file on the Schiller-Szinessy children notably includes correspondence, 1958-1965, of Raphael Loewe on the welfare, death and burial of Sydney Schiller-Szinessy. Other original material comprises a manuscript transcript of Bereshith Rabbathi; undated manuscript accounts of the Hebrew language, for teaching; bound copies of Der Ungarische Israelit (in German), 1886, for Dr Schiller-Szinessy; a notebook containing manuscript verse and miscellaneous notes, inscribed [1903]. There is a typescript list of documents relating to Schiller-Szinessy, 1940, and a ticket for an address by Raphael Loewe on Schiller-Szinessy, 1962.

The collection includes Schiller's notebooks, his working notes, scripts of his lectures, articles and essays, correspondence concerning engagements and with colleagues and students, material relating to his involvement with courses for teachers, personalia, printed material and photographs. Schiller's notebooks mainly contain working notes and the text for his lectures which provide evidence of his educational ideas, for instance, on the teaching of numbers, the importance of freedom and creativity through art, craft and movement activities, on reading, writing and conversation.
Also included are the notes and papers of Schiller's wife, Mrs Lyndall Schiller, including diaries of their daughters' childhood development. These records of Lyndall were deposited along with those of her husband and as much of them relate to matters that were of interest to both of them they have been retained within the collection of her husband's papers.
In addition the collection contains papers of two of Schiller's students who attended the 'Course on the Education of Children in the Junior School' organised by Christian Schiller at the University of London Institute of Education, 1959s. These include some wooden mathematical teaching apparatus.

Papers of Steve Schenk, 1941-1987, comprising research notes and material relating to his teaching career, concerning publications and articles, personal matters and associations and individuals connected to Schenk.

Letters to Mary Scharlieb, and testimonials about her, 1890-1912, [n.d.], and 3 letters from her, 1909-1923, on medical, philanthropic, political (women's suffrage) and personal matters. The testimonials are from Sir Frederick Treves, Sir James Paget, and Henry Acland, and correspondents include Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Dorothea Beale, Mary Kingsley, Sarah Grand, Michael Foster, Lord Roberts, and Philip Gibbs. The Herbert Scharlieb items consist mainly of testimonials when applying for the post of Assistant Anaesthetist at the Dental Hospital, 1901, including from J Rose Bradford, H Charlton Bastian, Rickman J Godlee, and Victor Horsley, but there is also a letter to him from his mother while in Madras, 1884, and one from Marcus Beck about the University College Athletic Fund, 1892.

Schapera's field notebooks from his work in Botswana (then Bechuanaland), recording work on the Kgatta, Kwena, Ngwato and Ngwakelse tribes; working papers and notes, including genealogies of royal families, correspondence, drafts of an unpublished book on David Livingstone; various printed documents on the subject of Botswana; and books from Schapera's library on the subject of David Livingstone.

This collection deals with a law suit brought by the Osram company, against a former employee, Ernst Schaefer, before the Reichsverwaltungsgericht, Berlin, 1941. The gist of the ruling is that in light of a new law affecting Jewish World War One veterans (29 December 1938) the firm was justified in terminating a previous agreement in which Schaefer was to receive a pension and other benefits.
