Letter from Sir John Coode of 35 Norfolk Square, Hyde Park, London to Mr Liddell, 30 Dec 1873. Thanking him for his congratulations and says that they are much impressed with the work of Fanny's husband. He is glad to hear that William is well occupied 'in these days when so many men are put aside and "shelved" against their wishes'. Discussing the Weymouth sewage works, nearly completed. Hopes to meet William, if he (Coode) visits Portsmouth.

Collection of ephemera, 1857-1869 and undated {1850s-1860s}, largely printed, including playbills, programmes, song sheets, catalogues and guides, relating to events, including sport, music, fireworks, fountains and illuminations, at the Crystal Palace (Sydenham, Kent); to operas at the Royal English Opera and the Royal Italian Opera, Covent Garden (Westminster); and to theatrical, musical and other recreational events, including comedies, ballets, tableaux, dioramas, exhibitions, and popular scientific events, at various premises including in Westminster, St Marylebone, Paddington, St Pancras, St Giles in the Fields, South Kensington, Kew, and Greenwich.

Letters and papers relating to the Cook Medal struck by the Royal Society in honour of Captain Cook.

Manuscript, c1760, entitled 'Directions for sailing from the harbour of Halifax to Quebec, by James Cook, Master of His Majesty's Ship Northumberland'. The text is written in Cook's hand throughout. Pasted into the manuscript are a table showing latitude and longitude of capes etc (f 17r) and a list of names, mostly of native chiefs encountered in the Pacific on Cook's first and second voyages (f 18r).

Papers of James Cook, 1774-1971, comprise a photograph of a letter to Captain John Walter of Whitby, 13 Sept 1774, describing his discoveries in the South Seas; photocopy of accounts for food purchased, headed 'Captain Cook on board the Resolution at Long Reach', June 8 1776 and correspondence, 1899-1937, relating to the Tahiti Memorial to Captain Cook.

The collection contains material from James Cook's student days at Imperial College, London in the 1920s and 1930s, papers relating to the Ipswich Unemployed Workers' League and other political activities in this period. There are papers relating to Cook's period in the South Place Ethical Society and general correspondence on national and international politics. The collection also contains papers relating to Cook's parliamentary campaigns in Henley-on-Thames in Berkshire and Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey; his time as Senator at the University of London; his membership of the Labour Party and his work in the General Municipal Workers Union. There is also material relating to Cook's personal life.

Letters From A Volunteer, a pamphlet edition of letters written to his parents while in barracks at Dover with 3 and 10 Bns East Surrey Regt, Oct 1914-Jan 1915, illustrated with photographs and privately published by Don(ald) Cook in 1984; photocopies of two articles by Donald Cook, namely 'The agony of Loos', on the Battle of Loos, France, Sep 1915, from Stand To! The Journal of the Western Front Association, Summer 1985, and 'Divisional Commander in France: General Sir David Campbell GCB', on the military career of Campbell, 1896-1936, particularly his service on the Western Front, 1914-1918, and his role as commander of 21 Div, 1916-1919, from The Army Quarterly and Defence Journal, vol 118, no 2, Apr 1988; copies of sketch maps relating to the above articles, [1984-1988].

Papers of Sir Albert Ruskin Cook and Lady Katharine Cook including correspondence, 1812-1951, giving many details of the Cooks' life and work in Uganda. There is also a large collection of diaries, 1855-1951, a number of photographs of Uganda and holidays abroad, c 1896-1930s, family and personal papers, 1882-1951, a small amount of printed material, [1896-1947], and microfilms of records held at the Albert R Cook Library of Medicine at the Makerere University Medical School, Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, covering 1897-1960s and including patient case notes and registers 1897-1920.

Letter from Thomas A Cook of Newcastle upon Tyne to H B Jordan, Esq of the Alkali Works, Bristol, 8 Dec 1845. Acknowledging Jordan's letter of 4 Dec 1845. Discussing at length the relative efficiency of stone stills [for manufacturing alkalis] used by Cook [at Walker, Newcastle], by Jordan and by Lee and Co; advising Jordan to visit Lee and Co and copy their stills exactly. Mentioning a Mr Bell's patent, the surprising cheapness of coal, and a meeting of masters [i.e. factory owners] which he was unable to attend. Noting that the returns show an increase of stock.

Personal and business correpondence of William Fothergill Cooke, mostly relating to his dispute with Charles Wheatstone, together with legal documents (copies and originals) connected with the case, in 7 bound volumes. Comprising personal correspondence, mainly to Cooke's mother relating to his hopes and expectations of the telegraph. The correspondence is mainly 1836-1841 with fewer letters for 1843, 1844, 1860, 1868, 1869, 1875, 1879 and 1880. There is also correspondence with Latimer Clark both before and after Cooke's death concerning a history of British Telegraphy and a life of Sir William Fothergill Cooke. Copies of this some of this correspondence can be found in Volume VII, and these are easier to read than the extensively crossed originals; Correspondence relating to railway companies, arbitration, and creation of the Electric Telegraph Company. The correspondence also shows the causes of the breakdown of his partnership with Wheatstone, the arbitration process and subsequent agreement to purchase Wheatstone's royalties in the shares; Correspondence between Mr Robert Wilson, solicitor acting for William Fothergill Cooke, and William Richardson, solicitor acting for Professor Wheatstone, relating to the arbitration between Cooke and Wheatstone, frequently concerning sending of drafts of agreement, with amendments, and with arranging appointments for arbitrators, and witnesses for the arbitration; Papers concerned with the arbitration between Cooke and Wheatstone, including bound copies of agreements and articles referred to in the arbitration; Papers submitted to the Arbitrators, Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and John Frederic Daniell in 1841, mainly copies of evidence. They represent Cooke and Wheatstone's cases, and the Arbitrators' decision, with one later patent granted to Sir William Fothergill Cooke. There are also some poems about Autralia or the Central World and Neptune at the end of the volume; Papers concerning assignment by Wheatstone of all royalties and shares to Cooke, including extracts of letters and transfers and assignments of inventions, rights in patents and shares separating Wheatstone and Cooke's business affairs; Copies of letters, mainly from Volume I of the collection made by George Bristow of the successor firm to Wilson and Harrison with the idea of publishing them on the 50th anniversary of the first Patent for the Electric Telegraph. The Volume contains copies of three letters between Bristow and Latimer Clark, and copies of extracts of other letters. Several letters were cut out for publication in 1893. There are also some notes made by a clerk at Bristow's concerning the other original material and its whereabouts, and also references to 'The Electric Telegraph: Was It Invented by Professor Wheatstone?' in two volumes by Sir W F Cooke, 1856-1857. The copies are easier to read than the extensively crossed originals.

Papers of William Cooke, 1790-1815, comprising a volume of manuscript notes by Cooke, of lectures by John Abernethy at St Bartholomew's Hospital, including anatomy, physiology, and bone diseases, 1806; a volume of manuscript notes by Cooke, of anatomical lectures by John Abernethy at St Bartholomew's Hospital, including notes on Dr Powell's and Dr Robert's Lectures on Medicine, 1806; a volume of manuscript notes by Cooke, of lectures by John Abernethy at St Bartholomew's Hospital, titled Extracts from Mr Abernethy's Lectures on Surgery 1806, including additions dated 1815, and a section titled Extracts from Cooper on Hernia relating to Sir Astley Cooper, 1806-1815; a volume of manuscript notes by Cooke, of surgical lectures by Henry Cline, including notes on bandages, and Goulard's Preparations of Lead, 1800; 2 volumes of manuscript notes by an unidentified hand, of lectures delivered by Osborn and Clark, titled Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery and the diseases of Women and Children by Drs Osborn and Clark 1790-1791, including manuscript notes probably taken by Cooke, of lectures by Andrew Thynne, dated Oct 1805.

Records of Messrs Cooling Lawrence & Sons, 1904-1955, comprising a volume containing material samples and details of customers' orders, with some correspondence with customers, 1928-1929, 1953-1955.

The collection is of family papers belonging to Isabella, Lady Cooper, her children and grandchildren. The papers include documents detailing Lady Cooper's inheritance and assignments of its stock to her husband and children.There is a collection of title deeds for Isleworth Estate, together with leases of various parts of it, tradesmen's vouchers, accounts and particulars of its eventual sale (1855-78). There are also some 17th century title deeds to property in Hidden, Hungerford, as well as later deeds, accounts, rentals and leases.

Among the personal papers are a group concerning the settlement made on the marriage of William Honywood, Lady Cooper's grandson, with Barbara Whyte, and a group of financial papers chiefly on the subject of loans and securities, the same is true of the papers belonging to William's sisters Elizabeth and Caroline. There are also papers dealing with a mortgage he held from Sir John Shelley on property in Maresfield and Fletching in Sussex and as an executor of his grandmother's will he was forced into lengthy proceedings against the Ware family of Cheltenham for a long outstanding mortgage debt owed to Lady Cooper.

The last group of family papers relates to Elizabeth, Lady Cooper's younger surviving daughter, who married, secondly, the Reverend Edward Henry Dawkins. It includes their marriage settlement, and a number of his financial papers. The most interesting part of the whole collection relates to the sugar plantation of Dukinfield Hall, Jamaica (1719-1877). There are title deeds for a particularly tortuous descent, yearly accounts of crops, letters from the Jamaica agents and inventories of stock, which include slaves and give their names, ages, country of origin, occupation and state of health. There is also the will of Robert Dukinfield (1755), the original owner of the plantation, which makes provision for his negre mistress and their children out of his other property. The family name has a variety of spellings, Dukinfield being the one most frequently applied to the estate, although the main branch of the family comes from Duckenfield, Chester.

There are also a few papers concerned with three plantations on the Island of Grenada, which Lady Cooper also inherited (1773-1867).

Papers of Davina Cooper, 1993-1994, comprise transcripts of 23 interviews with local officials, councillors and other individuals. With audio cassettes of 16 of these interviews and a computer disk of the transcripts.

Papers of Sir Frank Cooper, 1953-1999, primarily relating to his service as Permanent Under Secretary of State, Northern Ireland Office, 1973-1976, as Permanent Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence, 1976-1982, and post retirement, 1983-1999. Papers of Leslie Cope-Cornford, consisting of letters, 1902 to 1927, received by Cope-Cornford from Rudyard Kipling and others, thanking him for copies of his books, discussing the politics of the day and personal matters. The correspondence with Professor Sir Geoffrey Callender (1875-1946), refers to a scheme to establish a national maritime museum and there are many letters from Callender to Mrs Cope-Cornford, 1928 to 1938. Also present are two volumes of Press Cuttings of his own work, serving as a portfolio of his journalistic career.

Copied from a note by Gabriel Harvey, in a miscellaneous volume containing the 'Medea & Thyeste of Lod.Dolce.-The Hecuba and Iphigenia of Euripedes in Latin by Erasmus.-and the first Italian and English Grammar' by Henry Grantham 1575 A copy made by S.W. Singer (ob. 1859) of some annotations by Harvey. The volume also contains a copy of a cypher used for a letter by Queen Elizabeth to Nicholas Throckmorton, diplomat, 1 July 1559; with autograph letters from T.W. Jones (1854) and J. Thompson (1818) to S.W. Singer.

Copies of papers read to the Royal Society about 1662-1664, in three hands: pages 1-164 in one hand (the hand of Robert Hooke); pages 165-193 in another; and pages 193 to end in a third.

The greater part of this group of thirty-one facsimiles consists of copies of letters by Lord Nelson, 1758 to 1805. Some were produced in the early nineteenth century.

The principal series include the papers of Sir William Coventry (1628?-1686), 1585 to 1680, in the possession of the Marquess of Bath; the Royal Greenwich Observatory papers, 1674 to 1892, and the Board of Longitude papers, 1714 to 1829, held by the Royal Greenwich Observatory; and papers of Admiral Sir John Duckworth (q.v.) 1793 to 1813, held by Yale University and other repositories in North America. The remaining microfilms are mostly of smaller items, some obtained in fulfilment of conditions to secure an export licence. Examples of these include copies of the journals of Augustus Keppel (q.v.) kept during Anson's circumnavigation, 1739 to 1744; of Captain Cook (1728-1779) in the ENDEAVOUR, 1768 to 1770; and of Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) kept during the same voyage, 1768 to 1771.

These include photographs of letters of Lord Nelson, 1794 to 1797; of his journal of the AGAMEMNON, 1794; two letters written by Captain Cook, 1772; and some papers of Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1813), Astronomer Royal, 1761 to 1793.

These include two early works on shipbuilding: Matthew Baker's 'Fragments of English Shipwrightry', c 1586, and Sir Anthony Deane's 'Doctrine of Naval Architecture', 1670, held in the Pepysian Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Other examples include copies of two letters written by Sir Francis Drake, ([1540]-1596) 1587 and 1589, a copy of his will, 1595, and one of his 'Pilot of the Caribbean and Azores', 1596; copies of the will of Captain Cook, made in 1776, and of fifty-six letters by or about Lord Nelson, 1780 to 1805, and the personal papers of Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1813), Astronomer Royal.

These include transcripts of documents dating from the sixteenth century: the earliest is a description of Drake's preparations for his expedition in 1585. There are also transcripts of official letters, 1718 to 1720 to Admiral Sir George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington (1663-1733), when he was in command of the British fleet in the Mediterranean; a copy of a letter describing the sinking of the GREAT BRITAIN in the St Lawrence River, 1842; and transcripts of letters from the Duke of Windsor and Prince Albert (later King George VI) to Admiral Sir Campbell Tait (1886-1946), 1913 to 1919.
