Correspondence of Heinz Werner Löwenstein, documenting his experiences as a German Jew who emigrated to South Africa in 1935, and the experiences of his parents who remained in Berlin, and who disappeared after having been transported to Riga, Jan 1942. 643/1-4 consists of correspondence between Heinz Werner Löwenstein and his parents, 1935-1940. The letters provide an interesting account of the difficulties encountered by a young immigrant trying to make his way in South Africa as well as of the life led by Jewish people in pre-war Berlin. The letters make hardly any reference to the political situation and the real hardships and dangers of the parents' lives are hidden. 643/5 comprises correspondence from Heinz Werner Löwenstein while he was a sergeant in the South African Army to his friends, Hans and Milly Hirsch, 1941-1943. There is an uninterrupted flow of letters describing life in the army in North Africa until June 1942. In October, the correspondence resumes with a post card from an Italian POW camp. This is followed by more frequent letters after his repatriation in April 1943. The letters not only give a very vivid picture of life in the army and in the POW camp, they are also testimony to the close friendship between Löwenstein and Hans Hirsch, who had known each other in Germany since before their emigration.

Copies of letters either authored by or forwarded to Eliezer Kaplan, 1936, relating to Zionist and Aliyah organisations including the activities of Keren Hayesod (The Palestine Foundation Fund), in particular the [settlement project] Mifal Bizaron. The letters bear a London address and a PO box in Jerusalem.

Transcript of the diaries (originally in six volumes) of Louis Löwenthal, 9 Jan 1874-12 Jan 1881. The first part of the diary is written whilst he resides in the Jewish Hospital, recovering from an unspecified operation. The remainder of the diaries deal with day to day life at his family home in Sophienthal, Berlin, Leipzig, and other locations.

Papers relating to an international anti-Jewish congress in Belgium, [1930s], comprise details of the congress, entitled Union Antijudaique Universelle, papers concern the secrecy of the event, Muslims amongst the participants, earlier conferences of this sort and a permanent office for the Union Antijudaique Universelle in case of a new Jewish war.

Antisemitism in Argentina: various papers, 1935-1938, is divided into five sections. The first section comprises papers of Delegacíon de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas, including a manuscript report about the role of Alexander Lux in the service of the German Propaganda ministry, 1935 and a list with biographical notes of the members of the Committee against Racism and Antisemitism, 1935 (687/1).

The second section comprises copy correspondence of Hilfsverein Deutschsprechender Juden relating to German Jewish immigrants in Argentina and Brazil 1936-1937 (687/2).

The third, Comite contra el Racismo y el Antisemitismo de la Argentina printed declarations, 1937 and notes on the first Congress against Antisemitism and Racism which took place in Buenos Aries in August 1938 (687/3).

The fourth, an Organizacion popular contra el Antisemitismo letter to the President of Argentina [1935-1938] (687/4); and the fifth section, papers regarding German Jewish immigration to Argentina and unidentified satirical pamphlet exhorting people to visit Germany [1938] (687/5).

Confidential printed orders, 18 Oct 1941, regarding the role of Mischlinge in the Jugenddienst issued by the Jugendführer des Deutschen Reichs to various regional administrations and the heads of various central government ministries. It makes the distinction between Mischlinge 2 Grades (having one Jewish grandparent) and less, who are to be treated as German and Mischlinge 1 Grades (having 2 Jewish grandparents), who are to be placed on 'standby' but under no circumstances to be called up for service.

Correspondence and papers documenting the experiences of Frank Henley (formerly Otto Lichtenstein) when he came to England on the Kindertransport, 1938, chiefly comprising instructions sent by the Provinzialverband für jüdische Wohlfahrtspflege in der Rheinprovinz, the organisation responsible for the well-being of Jews from Cologne; also including his train and boat ticket and his identity card with photograph.

Copies of contracts and notarial certificate documenting the sale of a house at Burgschmietstrasse 12, Nuremberg, property of Max and Frieda Landenberger, to Gauleiter Hölz for the sum of RM 4,000 and a summary of the event, 4 Dec 1938-27 Feb 1939. This collection is an example of the way in which the Nazis forcibly appropriated Jewish property under the guise of a legitimate transaction into which both parties freely entered.

The main series for the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society/Methodist Missionary Society include material from the home organisation in London, which directed overseas missionary affairs, including Committee minutes and papers, candidates papers, 1829-1869, finance papers, 1817-1945, and outgoing correspondence. However, the bulk of the material comprises Synod minutes and correspondence send to London from missionaries in the overseas districts, including Europe, North America, West Indies, West Africa, Central Africa, South Africa, Kenya, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Southern India, Northern India, Burma, China & South East Asia, and Australasia/South Seas.
