The records of the Diocese of Gibraltar are concerned with the administration of the Diocese, the oversight of chaplaincies and relations with other organisations working within the Diocese and with other churches on the Continent.

Material relating to the 1970s when John Satterthwaite was Bishop of Fulham and Gibraltar has been catalogued as part of the Diocese in Europe. Also series (such as confirmation registers, G.L. Ms 32690/1-6) which begin before 1970 but continue beyond that date have been catalogued as Diocese in Europe records.

It should be noted that many of the records are general files and contain information on a variety of topics, e.g. administration, finance and chaplaincy. This is especially true of the large series of correspondence between the diocesan administration and the chaplaincies, Ms 32699/1-624. This correspondence relates to the Diocese in Europe and Jurisdiction of North and Central Europe as well as the Diocese of Gibraltar but has been grouped as one series for convenience.

Note, Ms 32568/1-12 are closed for 50 years.

The records of the Jurisdiction of North and Central Europe are those of successive Bishops of Fulham rather than of the Bishops of London and are mainly concerned with the administration of the Jurisdiction, the oversight of chaplaincies and relations with other organisations working within north and central Europe and with other churches on the Continent. With a few exceptions the records date from the 1940s and 1950s.

It should be noted that many of the records are general files and contain information on a variety of topics e.g. administration, finance and chaplaincy. This is especially true of the large series of correspondence between the diocesan administration and the chaplaincies (MS32699/1-624). The latter series is part of the records of the Diocese in Europe but includes correspondence between the Bishops of Fulham and chaplaincies within the Jurisdiction.

The title deeds are listed chronologically at the end. These records were catalogued by a member of Guildhall Library staff in 1979.

Records of the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry including orders, attestations books, circulars, minutes, muster rolls, correspondence and other papers. Where an item or series continues for some years, it may well bear more than one of the Regiment's titles. Some miscellaneous papers relating to the Regiment's history as a whole are placed near the end of the second sequence (Mss 17799-804). A few incidental items relating to earlier volunteer regiments are placed at the beginning of the first and second sequences. Notes relating to the early origins and history of the Regiment can be found in Ms 17804.

Records of the London Rifle Brigade, comprising registers of subscriptions, minutes, financial records, newsletters and other papers. The records were catalogued at various dates from 1955 by Guildhall Library staff.

Personnel records for the Middlesex Home Guard, including nominal rolls, registers of cadets, registers of names, lists of active members, history sheets, discharges and transfers.

The documents relate to officers, non-commissioned officers and men and women auxiliaries of:-

(d) 1st (Middlesex) Cadet Battalion, Royal Engineers, (Cadet Officers)

(e) London North Eastern Railway (London) Battalion Volunteer Local Defence Corps. (1940) 17th (City of London) Battalion, London North Eastern Railway Home Guard. (1940-1942). 33rd (Middlesex) London North Eastern Railway, Battalion, Home Guard, (Railway, and non-railway employees. (1943) (The year in brackets indicates change of title).

(f) H.M. prison (Feltham) Home Guard Unit, a sub-unit of "B" Company. 1st Middlesex Home Guard. (Transferred to "B" Company on 2 December 1942).

(g) General Aircraft Ltd., (Feltham), a sub-unit of "D" Company, 1st Middlesex Home Guard. (Later became 9th MX. (HG) Bn.)

(h) 2nd Home Guard.

These records contain a wealth of information, not merely number, rank, and name, but personal details, hitherto unrecorded. Information includes:- (a) Full name and address. (b) Profession, and/or place of employment. (c) National Registration Identity Number. (d) Details of previous service in the forces, (Rank, Branch etc.) (e) Next of Kin. (f) Whether owner of a Car/Cycle, or any motor vehicle. (g) Telephone Number (Home or business). (h) Age, (or date of birth). (i) Promotion in Home Guard. (j) Transfers (Regular Forces; Inter-unit; etc.) (k) Discharges (through death, or other causes). (l) Religion. (m) Resignations, (pressure of work, etc.) Other information includes, results of proficiency tests reports upon non-commissioned officers; strength states; returns of small arms; personal history sheets; lists of category, men, etc.

Papers of the 2nd Middlesex Volunteer Artillery, comprising orders relating to the royal review of volunteers, 1899, and observations on the regimental camp.

Records of HM Prison, Wandsworth. The records relate to prison administration, the prisoners, and, to a much a lesser extent, the prison staff. The earliest records are a minute and letter book, 1847-1850, and a letter book, 1848-1852, of the Committee for building a new prison in Surrey (ACC/3444/AD/01/001-002).

With regard to records relating to prisoners, the main series is the nominal registers (ACC/3444/PR/01), giving details of the name, age, trade, education, and religion of the prisoner, the date of committal, details of the offence and sentence and the date of discharge. These are in chronological order and run from 1879 to 1956, with several volumes produced each year. Unfortunately, there are only a few indexes to these registers. Those that survive run from 1940 to 1956 only (ACC/3444/PR/02).

The other important series giving details about individual prisoners are the registers of executions, 1892-1961 (ACC/3444/PR/03), and files on condemned prisoners, 1933-1954 (ACC/3444/PR/04).

Also of interest is a series of glass plates of prison officers and prisoners from 1920 to the 1930s.

PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with Home Office regulations, the entire collection is subject to a 30 year closure period, with the exception of some particularly sensitive series, which are subject to longer closure periods. These are all marked on the catalogue.

Roll of persons issued with the regimental uniform of the Royal Exchange Division of the Loyal London Volunteers, 1803.

Records of the Corps of River Fencibles of the City of London comprise: a book of subscriptions, 1808 (Ms 6386A); copy muster roll, 1803-7 (Ms 6434); and account of subscriptions to a fund,1809-10 (Ms 6434A). They were catalogued by Guildhall Library staff in 1951. It is not known whether any other records of this Corps have survived.

Administrative records, chaplaincy records, clinico-pathological minute books, title deeds and other legal records, financial records, patient records, nursing records, photographs and records received from unofficial sources.

This series consists of volumes containing a précis of, or reference to, every minute submitted to the Postmaster General from the Secretary to the Post Office in Scotland, relating to all aspects of Post Office administration. Separate bound indices to the minutes begin in 1846.

Much of the actual paperwork referred to in these volumes can be found in the accompanying class POST 32 (Scottish Minute Papers). For further details of how this class relates to the other report and minute classes, see the following section 'Related Material'.

The dates and minute numbers on the binding of a number of the volumes are incorrect.

Please note that all of the records in this class cover the years 1842-1921, with the exception of one record, POST 37/187, which is an index to minutes for the years 1920-1937.
