Mr. Sussman's intention had been to produce a history of psychiatric treatment in the U.K. through the eyes of its practitioners similar to the one he had already produced on Canada; copies of this work (Pioneers of Mental Health and Social Change by Djuwe Joe Blom and Sam Sussman, Third Eye, London Canada, 1989) are also included in this collection. A.D. Douglas and E.D. Oram of Saxondale Hospital were interviewed first; the recordings were typed up and subsequently corrected and slightly amended, evidently in preparation for the publication. The interviewees discuss their training and experiences as psychiatrists and the changes in the profession from the 1940's and 1950's. The Wellcome Library subsequently received cassettes of those interviews, as well as a cassette and transcript of a similar interview with Dr Alfred Minto of Nottingham.

Mr Williams also allowed copies to be made of text and photographs from a scrapbook which he had put together of his service with No 6 Field Surgical Unit (FSU), and of loose photographs, including transparencies.

The plans show examples of a diverse range of architectural styles in domestic housing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are also many shops, factories and workshops, as well as public buildings such as schools, cinemas and churches, many of which still exist today.
The files are interesting for the insight they give to the planning process, showing what was and was not acceptable from a design and structural point of view. And as many of the earlier plans are for the most part hand drawn and coloured, they can be very decorative.
