Fragment of a manuscript of Bede's Expositio in Cantica Canticorum, containing his commentary on the Song of Songs 1, 3-7, beginning '[Quae] tanto magis amori' and ending 'te qui in custodi[enda]' (see Patrologiae cursus completus...Series (Latina) Prima (ed) J.P. Migne, XCI, 1086-92). The document was probably written in the early 12th century, but includes a few marginal notes in a 14th century hand.

Fragment of Kyng Alisaunder
GB 0096 MS 593 · 1330-1340

A vellum bi-folium containing part of the Middle English poem Kyng Alisaunder, probably dating from 1330-1340. This fragment, much worn through use as a wrapper, contains parts of lines 6676-6850 and 7214-7388 (according to the edition by G.V. Smithers), though the last five or six lines in each column have been cut away. The fragment is foliated 43 and 44 in a 14th century hand.

GB 0096 MS 836 · 1337-1342

Leaf, foliated 142 in a 14th century hand, from the register of the Court of Criminal Justice of the Commune of Pistoia, written by Andreas, son of the notary Johannes Thome de Aquata, as notary and 'officialis' of the Podestà, Parisanus de Parisanis de Castiniano. The sentences are dated 19 July 1337, and marginal notes by other notaries of subsequent payment of fines are dated 11 Aug 1337 and 6 Jun 1342. Includes a specimen of the notarial sign of Andreas.
The manuscript was folded to make a bifolium to act as fly-leaves for a book measuring about 302 mm x 210 mm. The fly-leaves contain the following inscriptions in the same humanist hand, probably all made on the leaf in 1563:(i) 'Hic Liber est Antonii de Ce(n)tiis et suorum amicorum.

'Fragmenta regalia, or, Observations on Queene Elizabeth her tymes and favorites' by Sir Robert Naunton. An autograph letter accompanying it, from T.R. Maynard, 1845, suggests that this is the original MS. It was first published, posthumously, in 1641. Internal evidence points to c. 1630 as the date of composition.

GB 0096 MS 932 · Mid 13th century

Two manuscript fragments, written in England in the mid-13th century, containing part of the text of Boethius's De topicis differentiis, comprising:
Fragment I recto = 'ambiguitatemque adducta...iustus non est' (1174 C 8-1175 A 10).
Fragment I verso = 'ut ita demum...in orationibus inve...' (1175 B 4-D 5).
Fragment II recto = 'aliae vero quas animus...inhaereat' (1176 C 8-1177 B 9).
Fragment II verso = '...niantur. Nam saepe...inveniri' (1175 D 5-1176 C 8).
References given relate to J.P. Migne Patrologiae Cursus Completus...series (Latina) Prima (Paris, 1844-1864).
This is as the fragments are bound, but of course II verso follows directly on I verso, so they are consecutive leaves with a continuous chunk of text apart from the cropping to I. The text is heavily abbreviated and the margins substantial, evidently designed for glosses. The text seems to be considerably different from that given in Migne.

Two paper leaves, formerly pastedowns and much mutilated, relating to Scottish religion. The date of the fragments is uncertain, and Professor Gordon Donaldson of the University of Edinburgh, who examined these two fragments in Jan 1965, inclined to a date in the 1630s for both items - his opinion is contained in a letter now accompanying MS 610.
The first fragment is part of a letter from 'your disciples & se[rvants?] to suffer with you: EL, AD [Andrew Duncan?], IC [Isaac Casaubon?], et cet.', which may have been written to Andrew Melville while he was imprisoned in England, which would date the documents to c 1609. Donaldson states that the text makes reference to what seems to be the Act of Revocation of 1625 and could relate to the opposition of Scottish Presbyterians to Charles I in that year.
The second fragment is part of a draft of a petition from Scotland against the attempt to re-establish episcopacy in Scotland, c 1609. Donaldson's view is that the terminology used associates it with the National Covenant of 1638.

Records of the Working Women's College, later known as the Frances Martin College for Women. The records listed here cover the history of the college from its foundation in 1874 until 1957, a period of 88 years. Minutes of council and AGMs from 1874 onwards, kept in the hand of Miss Frances Martin until 1920 almost without a break, annual prospectuses and an almost complete series of annual reports exist. These, together with college magazines and scrapbooks give a very full picture of the life and activities of the college since its foundation, and reveal the remarkable enthusiasm and dedicated service of all those who have been connected with it which have carried it forward successfully over the years through good times and bad.
