The Altmann collection, [1920-1997], comprises papers of Alexander Altmann; papers of his brothers, Manfred and Erwin Altmann, Altmann family papers and papers relating to the Institute of Jewish Studies. Includes memoirs, diaries, draft manuscripts, research papers, letters, photographs, audio-visual material, family research papers, financial and legal papers and papers relating to publications and conferences.

Records of the United Synagogue's own Board of Jewish Religious Education, as well as the London Board of Jewish Religious Education and its predecessor the Jewish Religious Education Board, and other bodies such as the Union of Hebrew and Religious Classes, the Jewish Association for the Diffusion of Religious Knowledge, the Jewish Memorial Council, the Central Council for Jewish Religious Education and the Jewish Voluntary Schools Association. Also records of individual schools and institutions such as the Jews Free School, Jewish Infant Schools, Westminster Jews Free School, Ilford Jewish Primary School and Michael Sobell Sinai School. Records of the Assistant Masters Association from 1898 until its amalgamation in 1978, including minutes, officers' files, correspondence and publications.

The collection includes George Baines' correspondence and papers re his work at Brize Norton, 1962-1966 and school magazines from Ashwell County Primary School, 1950s. However, the majority of the papers are those of George and Judith Baines relating to their work at Eynsham County Primary School, 1960s-1980s. These include administrative papers, teachers' guides, teachers' record books, school magazines, building plans and press cuttings. Also included is a copy of the episode of the BBC television series, 'The Expanding Classroom' which featured the work of George and Judith Baines at Eynsham School. The film was made in the summer term of 1969 before the first new school building burnt down. The collection contains many examples of children's work, mainly from Eynsham County Primary School, but also from Brize Norton, including project books, creative writing, audio tapes of music, art work, including block printing, and work with fabric. The project books each include some mathematics, scientific obeservation or experiment, creative writing and art work and were bound in block-printed covers designed and executed by the children. Also included are texts of lectures and lecture notes; papers relating to courses and workshops; correspondence re visits, including overseas connections (Iceland, Canada and the USA), 1960s-1980s; papers relating to George and Judith Baines work with students at Bishop Grossteste College, Lincolnshire, 1980s. There are also slides and photographs of staff, pupils, activities, displays and field study trips at Eynsham County Primary School; of Judith Baines' work at Strathmore Infant School; of George Baines' work at Brize Norton; of tours and visits to Gambia, Canada and Iceland. There is also a small group of photographs, memorabilia and correspondence relating to Robin Tanner (1904-1988).

Papers, c1897-1949, of Alexander Banks, comprising photographs taken chiefly by Alexander Banks showing groups of missionaries, including the Banks, Hicks and Hodge families, Indian Christians, including the Das family, Hindus and Muslims, local festivals, buildings and views. Also included are copies of circular letters (1900-1902) and letters (1903-1906) from Alexander Banks; his diary (1899-1900); a record of orphanage children in India (1906) including photographs; and publications of the Regions Beyond Missionary Union.

The Katherine Bathurst Papers, 1891-1932, focusing mainly on her career at, and disputes with, the Board of Education, her interests in nursery education, the working conditions of the school inspectorate and the position of women within the inspectorate. The papers comprise inspection notes from school visits; notes for her preliminary and supplementary reports; copies of Board of Education Circulars; photocopies of the Women Inspectors' Reports; correspondence with her superiors and officials at the Board of Education; private correspondence, including with Sir John Gorst; correspondence with the National Union of Women Teachers (NUWT) and National Union of Teachers (NUT); published and unpublished articles; education pamphlets; and newspaper clippings of articles and editorials related to her dispute with the Board of Education and on general educational topics.

The BSc pass list gives name, field of study, course codes and some marks. Papers of Ruth Deech, Principal, St Anne's College Oxford and a member of the Inquiry team, relating to the Committee of Inquiry into Equal Opportunities at the Inns of Court School of Law, chaired by Dame Jocelyn Barrow (Barrow Inquiry), 1989-1994. The records do not comprise the official papers of the Inquiry, which are held elsewhere, and do not form a complete set, but they do include the bulk of the material. Most secondary source material collected during the Inquiry, such as information comparing the BVC with other jurisdictions, is not included in the papers but is listed in the Final Report of the Committee. Papers of Ebenezer Cooke, mainly printed, including published articles and papers on the teaching of art and design; ephemera concerning Cooke's involvement with the International Art Congress for the Development of Drawing and Art Teaching and the Education Society; notes taken at lectures, including on physiology, 1869, and on a course of lectures given by James Sully on 'Art and Vision' in 1880; report book [possibly belonging to Ben M Jones of the Diocesan Training College, Chester] with criticisms of lessons given by various teachers, including on their use of illustrative drawings, 1900-1901; papers relating to the London County Council Report of the Conference on the Teaching of Drawing in Elementary and Secondary Schools and Training Colleges, 1907-1909. Notably including correspondence between Daniell and friends and colleagues such as Charles Babbage, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, University of Cambridge, Charles James Blomfield, Bishop of London, Sir Marc Isambard Brunel, engineer, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet, Michael Faraday, Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac, chemist, John Frederic William Herschel, astronomer, James Clark Ross, polar navigator, principally concerning meteorology and meteorological instruments, the chemistry of batteries, the publication of Daniell's books and articles, the management of the Royal Society, London, Daniell's religious beliefs, 1821-1857; manuscript copies of lectures delivered by Daniell including at King's College London and the Military School of the East India Company, Addiscombe, Surrey, 1831-1845; printed articles and pamphlets by Daniell or reviews of his work, including On voltaic combinations (London, 1836), reviews of Meteorological essays and observations (London, 1823), 1823-1860; membership certificates of Daniell to various learned societies including National Institute for the Promotion of Science, Washington, US, 1839-1845; obituaries and biographies of Daniell, 1845-1990.

The papers of Hugh Davson comprise correspondence, working papers and printed reports, 1950-1988; including correspondence with the Medical Research Council, notably project applications and progress reports, 1951-1978; concerning Davson's publications, with reviews, 1962-1978; with the Wellcome Trust, 1974-1980; descriptions of recent research on the eye, 1970-1978; correspondence between Davson and colleagues in the United Kingdom, Europe and North America, mainly on administrative and publishing matters, including grant applications, conference organisation and reviews of new articles and books, 1958-1980.

This collection consists predominantly of notes, correspondence, press cuttings and printed matter on subjects such as British industries (including aviation, tin, steel, cotton and coal), prices and wages, restrictive practices, and economic development overseas. The collection also contains some personal papers including bank books and university notebooks.

Papers of Gordon Oxenbury Douglas, 1914-1999, relating to his social life at King's College London, comprise a black and white photograph of Gordon Oxenbury Douglas, [1940]; letters from Katharine Dilley to Douglas, whom he later married, 1934-1935; dance card belonging to Douglas for the King's College London Commemoration Ball, 1935 showing all dances marked for Katharine Dilley. The collection also contains professional references for Douglas from W.G Shilling of the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate, Lilian F Haddakin, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of English at University College London, W. W. Willliams, Assistant Censor at Fitzwilliam House, Cambridge University and from J. E. Young, Senior Classics Master at Ipswich School.

The papers of Clifford William Dugmore contain correspondence relating to the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, and printed booklets, 1956-1978; notably including correspondence with a number of leading historians such as Professors Murray Tolmie and Alfred Cobban, William Cargill-Thompson, and Geoffrey Nuttall, relating to Dugmore's editorship of the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, remarking upon aspects of publication, proofs and the chasing-up of contributors, 1956-1978; correspondence concerning senior staff appointments, 1958-1977 (closed); press cuttings describing the career of Professor Dugmore, 1957-1971; text, reviews and correspondence concerning Professor Dugmore's inaugural lecture in the Chair of Ecclesiastical History, 'Ecclesiastical History. No Soft Option', 1959-1960; copies of printed booklets entitled 'Rome and the Churches', the inaugural lecture of Professor Stuart Hall of King's College, delivered in 1979; Grace Abounding. Comprising material relating to the Zoology Department at Royal Holloway College, University of London, particularly during the 1960s and 70s; including a large number of photographs depicting staff and students from the Zoology Department, of fieldwork, particularly in freshwater ecology, and of trips to Poland; papers relating to the courses run by Dr Duncan for the Water Board, and research notes, correspondence and photographs on Cartesian Diver Respirometers; proposal for a University of London Institute of Hydrobiology; personal material including copies of Dr Duncan's CV and offprints of journal articles written by her, obituaries, and details of a meeting held in Vienna in her honour, which were collected together after her death.

Personal papers, notebooks and diaries relating to Sir Lewis Leigh Fermor, particularly his early life. Personal papers include marriage certificate to second wife (Lady Frances Fermor), and birth certificate of son (Patrick Leigh Fermor), CV, photos, and his initial contract with the Geological Survey of India, with diaries covering 1902-1904 and 1908, and notebooks on natural history.

The series also includes extensive correspondence between Lady Frances Fermor, the Geological Society, and other individuals on the subject of Lady Fermor's will and the establishment of the Fermor Fund and Fermor Lecture, as well as the will itself and conditions of the Fund.

Material ranges in date from 1889 to 1998.

Papers relating to Sir Raymond Firth's research and professional career, including field notes and papers relating to Firth's research on the Tikopia, the Malayan peasantry and the New Zealand Maori; field notes and papers relating to Firth's studies of London kinship; texts of lectures and seminar papers delivered by Firth; subject files compiled by Firth; papers relating to relating to Firth's involvement with various academic and professional institutions, including the Association Of Social Anthropologists, the Australian National University, the Colonial Office, the Colonial Social Science Research Council, the West India Social Survey, and the London School of Economics and Political Science; correspondence, including correspondence with Bronislaw Malinowski and other professional colleagues. The collection also includes field notes, diaries and other papers relating to Rosemary Firth's research on the domestic economy of the Malayan peasantry.

Records of the Working Women's College, later known as the Frances Martin College for Women. The records listed here cover the history of the college from its foundation in 1874 until 1957, a period of 88 years. Minutes of council and AGMs from 1874 onwards, kept in the hand of Miss Frances Martin until 1920 almost without a break, annual prospectuses and an almost complete series of annual reports exist. These, together with college magazines and scrapbooks give a very full picture of the life and activities of the college since its foundation, and reveal the remarkable enthusiasm and dedicated service of all those who have been connected with it which have carried it forward successfully over the years through good times and bad.
