The archive consists of the papers of Mary Berenson, her daughter Ray Strachey and her granddaughter Barbara Strachey Halpern. It comprises letters and correspondence mainly concerned with personal and family news, typescripts and manuscript notes, press cuttings mainly relating to suffrage and equal pay activities, photographs of Ray Strachey and other members of the Strachey family, and some material relating to Ray's grandmother, Hannah Whitall Smith. Also a manuscript recipe book owned by members of the Strachey family and a file of material relating to Kathleen Halpin.

The archive consists of a photocopy of a typescript autobiographical essay by Kay Pilpel entitled, 'Growing up in the 1930s' in which she describes her family background, the Jewish community in London from the 1890s onwards, and her daily life as a child and schoolgirl at Tottenham High School for Girls, including her experience of evacuation during the Second World War. The essay is illustrated with family trees and includes copies of family photographs.

The archive consists of correspondence, press cuttings, copies of speeches and articles by Shena Simon relating to education and her work as a local councillor in Manchester. It includes a biography of Lady Simon by her daughter-in-law Joan Simon, with background biographical notes.

The collection contains 30 letters written between 1885 and 1924. Correspondents include William Thomas Stead, Frances Power Cobbe, Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Herbert Stead, the Governor of Holloway Prison, Mrs Stead, Mr W Shaen, Miss Kensington the Secretary of Girton College, Mrs Frederic Whyte; the materials also include W T Stead's 'Holloway' New Year Cards, 1885. The letters discuss the Criminal Law Amendment controversy, speeches, his term in jail and emotional state, theology, Leslie Stephens, Edmund Garrett Fawcett, women's suffrage and education, the Royal Commission of 1871, trips for working women and the loan of Millicent Garrett Fawcett's Stead letter collection to a biographer.

Portrait of Lilian de Lissa, first principal of Gipsy Hill Teacher Training College, by artist Gilbert Spencer. The painting was commissioned by the college as a present for Miss de Lissa and presented to her in a ceremony in October 1953. The portrait has been held by Gipsy Hill Teacher Training College prior to passing to Kingston Polytechnic and Kingston University.

Papers of Arthur Geoffrey Dickens (1910-2001), Fellow and Tutor of Keble College, Oxford, Professor of History at Hull and London Universities, and Director of the Institute of Historical Research, author and editor of books on medieval and Reformation history: Working papers, including typescripts of his 'Reniassance and the Reformation and Reformation in historical thought', bound volumes and folders of handwritten and typed notes, drafts and albums of reviews, offprints, pamphlets etc, some in photocopy, many annotated by Dickens, some correspondence (c1929-1992).

Correspondence to and from Florence Farr, photographs of Florence Farr, reviews of Modern Women, flyers of plays, performance programmes. There are photographs, some signed, showing her in acting roles and in her time in Ceylon. Amongst the remaining items there are performance programmes and posters.

The collection consists mainly of minutes, financial records, manuscripts of unpublished texts and correspondence. It provides interesting detail on what one section of society thought would provide education for another. There is much useful information on the reading preferences of the public, and on the growth and development of Mechanics' Institutes. Most of those concerned with the founding of the Society as a project in self-education were also involved in the founding of the new University of London (now University College London) and some, like Augustus De Morgan and George Long, actually taught there. There is also considerable information on the work of publishers, illustrators, engravers and booksellers and on writers, whether already established authorities in their field or young hopefuls, like G H Lewes, who sought to establish themselves through the Society's patronage.

Manuscript volume containing 'An account of Mr [John] Jenning's method of academical education, with some reflections upon it, in a letter to a friend who had some thoughts of reviving it. Written in the year 1728', and dated at Market Harborough, 31 Oct 1728. This may be the original account written by Philip Doddridge and sent to Isaac Watts.
This manuscript text is followed, in another hand, by copies of two letters from Robert Nelson, one, of 27 July 1708, to George Hanger giving moral advice on Hanger's departure for Turkey on business; the other, dated Epiphany 1713, to Gabriel Hanger on the same subject. There are also, in other hands, extracts from dissenting authors, one dated Oct 1821.

Correspondence and papers of Bellot. The papers represent and illustrate the activities of Bellot's academic life as well as his personal one. There are letters to his family describing his schooldays at Bedales School up to his involvement with University College, Ibadan and his appointment to the Vice Chancellorship of the University of London.

The papers can be divided into three series: papers relating to his involvement in teaching and governance at the University of London, his personal papers that document his relationship with his fellow historians and his family; and papers created in the process of his historical research.

The official papers include case-files relating to: academic policy, University College, Ibadan, Westfield College, Senate committees, Board of Study in History at the University of London, Higher Education in Africa, and Library Policy.

His personal papers include: correspondence (1898-1968) with fellow historians (such as Albert Frederick Pollard, Thomas Frederick Tout, Robert Arthur Humphreys and J.E. Neale), members of his family, and other friends and acquaintances; family photographs; newspaper-cuttings; domestic account-books; diaries, records of his activities at Lincoln College; curriculum vitae; and travel notebooks.

The papers documenting Bellot's academic activities and historical research include: drafts, off-prints and notes for various works, including some unpublished; correspondence with his publisher, The Athlone Press; bibliographical and lecture notes; and the obligatory historical notes on areas of American History, economics and obituaries.

This collection contains City of London School for Girls administrative records (1895-2005), various printed material including school magazines (1890s-2006), visual material and artefacts including a large collection of photographs depicting pupils and staff (1890s-2004), records of societies connected to the school (such as Girl Guides and material of the City of London Old Girls' Association).

Records of particular interest are the Leaver's Service programmes which provide a fairly comprehensive list of pupils who attended the school. Also of interest are the prize giving programmes which are also useful for researching pupils and school magazines which provide detailed information on school activities, events and other developments.

Records of the John Roan School, Greenwich, and predecessors. This collection contains Roan Estate deeds for property in Greenwich (1473-1955); Governors' minutes, Head Teachers' reports and Clerk and Surveyor correspondence files (1682-1995); Roan Schools administrative records (1866-2002), pupils admissions and discharge registers (1705-1994), various printed material including school magazines (1834-1999), a large collection of photographs depicting pupils and teaching staff (1895-1990), and commemorative trowel, school badges and items of clothing (1876-1979); and school log books (1884-1976) for various schools operating in Charlton.

Records of particular interest are the Roan Estate deeds (LMA/4442/01/01) which are an excellent resource for the research of family and local history of Greenwich from the 15th to the 20th centuries and the admission and discharge registers (LMA/4442/03/02) provide a fairly comprehensive set of details of pupils who attended the Roan Schools. The calendars and prize giving programmes (LMA/4442/03/03) are also useful for researching pupils at the school and the school magazines, prospectuses (LMA/4442/03/03) and head teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01) provide detailed information on school activities, events and other developments.

The school represents a good example of the use of increases in charitable gifts and funds in Greenwich from the 17th century and details can be found in the surviving records of the first school, the Grey Coat School, in the Orders of the Feoffees (1682-1716) (LMA/4442/02/01/01/001) and the Register of admissions and discharges (1705-1736) (LMA/4442/03/02/01/001) which includes churchwardens' charity payments to Greenwich poor widows.

The impact of the Second World War on the Roan Schools is documented by a number of records in the collection including the Governors' Clerk and Surveyor's correspondence files which give detailed descriptions of bomb damage in Greenwich.

Information on the school's planning for the evacuation can be found in the Governors' Clerk's files (LMA/4442/02/02) and some lists of pupils evacuated and accounts of the evacuation to Kent and South Wales for four years can be found in reports in the Roan Schools records (LMA/4442/03/01 and LMA/4442/03/03) and Governors' minutes and Head Teachers' reports (LMA/4442/02/01).

Papers collected by Tim Matthews concerning activities at University College of Rhodesia (UCR) and conditions in Rhodesia, 1968-1975; comprising correspondence and papers on University College of Rhodesia, 1968-1971, including material on links between UCR and British universities, papers on Matthews' expulson in 1970, and press cuttings; correspondence and papers on Matthews' activities in London, 1970-1972, including correspondence with George Thomson MP and Jack Straw, President, National Union of Students, on events at UCR and the problem of educaton for Rhodesians, correspondence with Harold Wilson on Labour Party policy on Rhodesia; correspondence and papers on the campaign to exclude UCR from the 1973 Association of Commonwealth Universities Conference; and correspondence and papers on the African National Congress, 1973.

(ii) 2 letters from officers of the Teachers' Guild to Mrs [Harriet] Quick (Quick's widow), 1896-1900. Relating to her husband's library and its transfer to the Guild.

All letters autograph, with signatures.

Papers of Professor Andrew Rutherford, including material relating to the teaching of literature at University level, such as lectures dating from his time at the University of Aberdeen, and reports to the British Council on his lecturing tours abroad; documents concerning the admission of Goldsmith's College as a School of the University of London; appointment diaries and a file of speeches made while Vice-Chancellor of the University of London; research material compiled by Rutherford relating to his book book The literature of war: five studies in heroic virtue (Macmillan, 1978) and his editorship of seven volumes of Kipling's stories and poetry , most notably Early verse by Rudyard Kipling (Oxford University Press, 1986), comprising working notes, photocopies, correspondence and drafts.

Manuscript notes taken from lectures by Dugald Stewart on political economy, 1806. The first lecture (of 42) is dated 3 Feb 1806. The notes are written on the verso only of every leaf.

A book of manuscript poems, composed by John Phillips from 1825 to 1863, lists of honours conferred on him, 1825-1860, lists of lecture engagements 1824-1860 and a manuscript entitled the incidents in the life of John Phillips, 1800-1860.

Three apparently unrelated documents in French, namely:

1. An eight page manuscript memoranda, probably written by an emigré Frenchman, containing observations on the attitude of the Swiss Cantons towards France, and the possibilities of involving them in a war against France, written in London, 28 Mar 1792.
2. Letter from Comte Origeon(?), written from Paris, 4 Mar 1789, unaddressed.
3. Letter from Jean Marie Cécile Valentin-Duplantier (1758-1814), Préfet of the Landes, to the Director of the École Polytechnique [of Mont-de-Marsan?], acknowledging receipt of information about examinations, and written from Mont-de-Marsan, 28 Aug 1802.

Translations into English of charters, statutes, and resolutions relating to the University of Copenhagen from 1788-1837, entitled 'xxiv documents relating to the University of Copenhagen', and dated 11 Dec 1837. Includes the royal charter of 7 May 1788, and lists of lectures for 1835-1836, as well as material on the syllabus, examinations, the University's Polytechnic School (founded in 1829). The translations are followed by an appendix headed 'Remarks on the xxiv documents...', which serves as an introduction to the documents.
Both items are in the same hand, and their title-pages bear the stamp of the 'Translator To Her Brit. Maj. Mission. Copenhagen.' The title-page to the first item is bound at the end.
Inserted at the front of the volume is a [holograph?] letter dated 19 Apr 1838 from Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, Foreign Secretary, sending the manuscript to William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Burlington, and later the 7th Duke of Devonshire.
