The Wensley Family Archive (c 1890-1950) includes the following material:

1) Correspondence and Related Material. This is currently stored in 11 level arch files and is listed under over a thousand item numbers. Some further material continues to come to light and may be offered to Bishopsgate in due course. In the final file there is some material relating to the period after FPW's death consisting of condolence letters and letters from former colleagues.

2) Other Family Papers. Specifically these contain: FPW's diaries; plus those of his wife and daughter. There is also much material relating to Masonic Lodges and social events. There are three note books kept by FPW relating his various arrests of criminals and the commendations he received for these. There are various other items relating to his professional career including two volumes of Hansard from 1928 - together with much family ephemera. There is, for example, an autograph book dating to the early 1920s which contains some curious drawings and watercolours and what appears to be a page containing the signatures of the Arsenal First Team c 1936.

3) Newspaper Cuttings. There are three separate files (the first two in large guardbook folios prepared by FPW) - the third in a lever arch file collated in 2007. The first two contain large amounts of material going back to the 1890s relating to many of the cases with which FPW was involved - in particular there is a large amount of space devoted to the Sidney Street Siege; the Trial of Stinie Morrison (both 1911) and the Thompson Bywaters case of 1921. The third file brings together press cuttings from the period 1911 to 1946 which largely relate to a series of items written by FPW for the Sunday press in the early 1930s.

4) Two Unpublished Typescripts. 1) Burnett, R.J. 1960? Wensley of Scotland Yard: The Life and Adventures of the 'Ace' Detective. It is of interest in that Burnett had access to both Edie Cory and certain former colleagues of FPW from Metropolitan Police Days. In this context item 57 in the collection is a note by Edie in three parts (typescript, manuscript and shorthand) of her earliest recollections which was almost certainly compiled at about this time to inform the writing of the biography. 2) Robinson, D.J., 2007. The Wensley Family at War, Work and Play (1890 to 1950). This book was written by Dr David J. Robinson for family distribution and with a view to forming the basis of a book for commercial publication.

5) Drawings - There are a number of important survivals; in particular some originals pertaining to the Sidney Street Siege (1911) and a cartoon of the 'Big Four' at Scotland Yard.

6) Postcards. Although some are included under 1) where it has been possible to identify the writer, recipient and date - a large number are still separate. The evolution of the postcard as a means of social networking and virtually instant communication is well documented.

7) Manuscript Commonplace Books. Two have been preserved from this period - one relating to FPW and the second to his son Harold William. There is also a third relating to his grandson Harold Cory but this logically forms part of the later collection.

8) Prize Books. Family school prize books are well represented from the period 1905 to 1915 and are in exceptional condition; these include volumes from Dempsey Street School and St Olave's Grammar School.

9) Other Books. FPW had a small library of profession literature and this, together with some other items from the family library, has survived.

10) Photographs - There is an extensive collection of these and they are being identified where possible. Photographs, however, were often printed onto a postcard in the early years of the 20th century - making family and commercial material sometimes difficult to separate.

11) Sheet Music - A small collection of sheet music has survived demonstrating the type of music popular with the family in the 1890s until 1914.

12) Other Ephemera and Artefacts. Other material has survived which is included where it is considered that it may add value to the archive overall.

Sargant was an outspoken supporter and practitioner of what he termed the 'practical rather than philosophical approaches' to the treatment of mental illness, pioneering and publicising various physical treatments and vociferously opposing the use of psychoanalytic techniques. The majority of the collection consists of his writings, both published and unpublished, supplemented by a small quantity of correspondence and other material. In addition, the collection contains clinical records for about 500 cases from Sutton Emergency Hospital in the 1940s. As well as covering clinical subjects (in Sections D, E, and F) and Sargant's views on the practice of psychiatry in general (Section B), the collection also contains material relating to his interest in the related issues of religious conversion and brainwashing (Section G).

Papers of concentration camp inmates, 1942-1944, comprise copies of correspondence concerning concentration camps and the death of Jews and notably include a letter from the commandant of Gross Rosen concentration camp, Lower Silesia, to the Gestapo, Düsseldorf regarding the disposal of belongings of deceased Jew, Max Zobel, 1942; letter from Ernst Kaltenbrunner to all police chiefs stating that all executions are to be reported to the local justice department, with reasons for the executions withheld, 1942 and a letter from Stürmbahnführer, SD Latvia, suggesting a lack of concern about notifying the relatives of dead Jews, 1942.

Working papers of the Survey of 'Labour and Life of the People' and 'Life and Labour of the People in London' by Charles Booth 1886 - 1903 comprising the original survey notebooks and papers: interviews, questionnaires, statistics, reports and colour coded maps describing poverty.
The papers and the original survey notebooks reflect the three areas of investigation undertaken in the survey: poverty, industry and religious influences.
The poverty series interviewed School Board visitors about levels of poverty in households and streets. The survey also investigated trades of East London connected with poverty: tailoring; furniture and women's work.
The industry series comprises interviews of employers, trade union leaders and workers for each trade and industry and questionnaires concerning rates of wages, numbers employed, details of trade unions and domestic details (food, dress and circumstances etc) which were completed by employees and trade union officials. The following trades and industries are covered by the survey: building trade; wood workers; metal workers; precious metals, watches and instruments; sundry manufacturers printing and paper trades; textile trades; clothing trades; food and drink trades; dealers and clerks; transport and gardeners; labourers; public service and professional classes; domestic service. Case histories of the inmates of Bromley and Stepney workhouses during 1889 and people who received outdoor relief from the union were also transcribed.
The religious survey includes reports of visits to churches and over 1450 interviews with ministers of all denominations including Church of England, Methodist, Presbyterian, Jewish, Roman Catholic. Salvation Army officers and missionaries were also interviewed. The reports of the interviews contain printed material relating to the churches. Questionnaires were also completed as part of the survey. The investigation went beyond documenting religious influences and incorporates a description of the social and moral influences on Londoners' lives.
The Maps Descriptive of London Poverty 1898-1899 are probably the most well known documents which survive from the survey. The Maps Descriptive of London Poverty 1898-1899 are twelve sheets colour coded by social class and poverty from black [semi-vicious] to yellow [middle and upper class, well-to-do]. The maps cover an area of London from Hammersmith in the west, to Greenwich in the east, and from Hampstead in the north to Clapham in the south. The working and printed copies of the maps are contained within the archive.
The social investigators accompanied police around their beats in London in order to update the existing street-level information for the Maps Descriptive of London Poverty 1898-1899. The reports of the walks are known as the 'police notebooks' and contain descriptions of London streets. All the notebooks have been digitised.
Other papers include an inventory undertaken in 1925 by Thomas Macaulay Booth, son of Charles Booth; additional manuscripts concerning the survey: circulars, statistics etc and booklets collected during the survey.

Iran: The Making of US Policy, 1977- 1980, is a themed microfiche collection which presents an integrated record of US foreign policy relating to Iran, 20 Jan 1977-29 Jan 1980. Included are memoranda, cabled messages, US embassy and consulate messages, Department of State reports, Central Intelligence Agency reports, US National Security Council reports and studies, and academic historical and political studies of the Middle East generally and Iran specifically, 21 Jan 1943-30 Apr 1980. Although the focus of this document set is on the 1977-1980 period, nearly one-third of the documents listed in the catalogue relate to the period prior to 1977. These are materials that were used in the preparation of the major internal inter-agency review of US-Iranian relations, the US Department of State 'White Paper'. The collection covers the beginning of the popular protests and mass demonstrations that resulted in the Iranian revolution of Feb 1979, which overthrew the pro-American monarchy of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, and established the Islamic Republic of Iran. The collection also covers efforts by the US and the Iranian Provisional Government under Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan to normalise relations between Iran and the US, which were frustrated by challenges from Islamic organisations including the Revolutionary Council. The collection records in detail the US reaction to the Iranian Constitutional Assembly, which pitted secular against religious forces during the drafting of the new constitution and which led to the formal establishment of a theocracy and the loss of Iran as a US strategic ally, Feb-Jun 1979. Manuscript volume containing a treatise by Johs Frédéric Schrader, [1820], entitled 'De la Police en Général, ou, Coup d'oeil rapide sur les différens systèmes des principales Nations de l'Europe', describing the efficiency of the police in the main European countries. The title maintains that Schrader wrote the treatise for the King of England (George III or IV). Schrader is also said to be the author of a work entitled 'Considérations politiques dans l'Etat de Allemagne en 1808'.

Field notes and working files collected by Edith Clarke and others for a survey of marriage and parentage in three rural communities in Jamaica, 1948-1949, known as the West Indian Social Survey. The two-year study was sponsored by the Colonial Social Science Research Council, and financed by the Colonial Office from funds provided for research under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act. The fieldwork was supervised by an advisory committee of the London School of Economics, comprising Professor Raymond Firth, Professor David Victor Glass and Professor Isaac Schapera.

The papers comprise personal correspondence between G Elton Mayo and his wife, Dorothea and his daughters, Patricia and Gael, 1913-1947. Dorothea Mayo expected her husband to write to her daily whenever he was away and the result is a series of diary style letters sent during their periods of separation. The fullest series are for 1922-1923 when Mayo visited the USA prior to settling in Philadelphia and for the period from 1929 to 1937 when Dorothea remained in England with their daughters.
The second series of correspondence comprises letters to his daughters while they continued their education at Bedales in England and during World War Two. The correspondence is mainly with his eldest daughter, Patricia, though there is some correspondence with Gael and also Patricia's first husband, Walter Goetz.
Both series of letters contain detail on Mayo's work and life at Harvard, including meetings with colleagues, lectures and research projects. In addition there is discussion of books, ideas and people which influenced his work and thinking. The World War Two letters include comments on the war from the USA and detail events leading to Gael's escape from behind German lines in France with her son and first husband.

The photographs and interviews were made between 1974 and 1979, and record life in Britain's inner urban areas in the 1970s.
