Biographical history
The Tobacco Research Team was founded in 1969, as the third research team of the Addiction Research Unit (after alcohol and drugs) at the Institute of Psychiatry. The role of the Tobacco Research Team is to increase understanding of the psychological and pharmacological aspects of tobacco dependence and develop more effective interventions to reduce tobacco-related diseases. The team was led by Professor Michael Russell for many years.

The Tobacco Research Team was founded in 1969, as the third research team of the Addiction Research Unit (after alcohol and drugs) at the Institute of Psychiatry. The role of the Tobacco Research Team is to increase understanding of the psychological and pharmacological aspects of tobacco dependence and develop more effective interventions to reduce tobacco-related diseases. Papers of the Tobacco Research Team, Addiction Research Unit, Institute of Psychiatry, 1969-2000, chiefly comprising research files for projects undertaken, notably led by Professor Michael Russell. Studies are predominantly trials for methods to beat addiction (such as nicotine patches and gum) and studies on the nature of tobacco addiction. Typical files include drafts of articles, raw data, blank questionnaires used for studies, medical notes and contact details of study participants. The collection also includes papers relating to grants for the study of tobacco addiction, notably from the the Medical Research Council (MRC); correspondence with medical practitioners, other medical research institutions, the MRC and private companies including Nicorette; papers relating to academic symposiums and conferences on tobacco addiction; publications and copies of articles on smoking and smoking related diseases; minutes and agenda for meetings of the Smoking Research Review Committee and preparatory notes for lectures on tobacco addiction.
