Biographical history
Annie Horatia Jones was the daughter of Sir Horace Jones. Sir Horace Jones was the appointed architect and surveyor to the City of London in 1864. During his employment he worked on a number of the City of London's key buildings such as Tower Bridge, Smithfield Meat Market and Guildhall Library. He received a knighthood by Queen Victoria in 1886. Annie Horatia Jones was born at 30 Devonshire Place, Portland Place, Marylebone on 29th August 1876. After her mother's death in 1888, Annie Horatia was bought up by her aunt, Tamazine Billings (nee Jones), known affectionately as 'Aunt Tammy' and Sydney Billings. Annie Horatia Jones died at Weydown House, Haslemere in Surrey on 27th March 1969.

The dolls are part of larger collection found in Annie Horatia Jones' cabinet dolls' house after her death in 1969. They were sold at auction and were purchased by Magdalena Byfield who later published a book containing an article on the dolls.

Annie Horatia Jones was the daughter of Sir Horace Jones. Sir Horace Jones was the appointed architect and surveyor to the City of London in 1864. After her mother's death in 1888, Annie Horatia was bought up by her aunt, Tamazine Billings (nee Jones), known affectionately as 'Aunt Tammy' and Sydney Billings. Records of Annie Horatia Jones, daughter of Sir Horace Jones. The collection contains ten dolls' house dolls dressed by Tamazine Billings (nee Jones) in 1886 for her niece, Annie Horatia Jones, to represent members of Sir Horace Jones' family and household. The dolls' original labels have been sewn onto their clothing to identify the family member they are intended to represent. There is also a photograph album depicting family including Sir Horace Jones, portrait of Annie Horatia Jones in outfit for City of London Mansion House Juvenile Dress Ball, and family at home in Devonshire Place; her correspondence with aunts, housekeeper and friends concerning holidays, her pursuits and interests (1883-1890), a scrapbook of coloured pictures and also a pencil drawing of Tamazine Billings as a girl (circa 1831). The collection presents an insight into Sir Horace Jones' family life. The different heights of the dolls of Sir Horace Jones and Lady Ann Elizabeth Jones and the size of dolls is thought to represent other family members demonstrates Victorian attitudes towards personal status within the family. The clothing on the dolls is also useful for looking at costume and dress during the late nineteenth century.
