Records of the Amalgamated Engineering Union. The collection has large gaps in the records. However, most of the material contains valuable details on engineers who were members of the union, and on those receiving benefits, for reasons including illness, accidents and deaths.

Seventy-seven volumes of handwritten quarterly report forms from branches of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Machinists, Millwrights, Smiths and Pattern Makers all over the country, including notes and figures on income and expenditure, membership numbers, excluded members, quarterly admissions, superannuated members, members gone abroad and the death of members or the wives (1853-1879).

Records of the Association of Fellowship Porters. The records were compiled between 1620 and 1895. However they also include a copy of the ordinances of 1566, and copies of acts from 1619. No membership records are available before 1756. The collection also includes rules and regulations; Court minute books; quarterage books and financial accounts.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. This collection contains the personal papers of Reginald Bassett, and consists of notes for addresses and speeches on politics, articles on politics, and lectures on political theory, international relations and economics. The collection includes minutes of meetings, annual reports, and letters, as well as papers relating to the General Strike of 1926.

Typescript of unpublished autobiography of Wilfred Blackwell Beard, titled Along This Way, written c1966-1967, and covering his early life and education in Manchester, his work as an apprentice and journeyman patternmaker in Manchester, Stockport, Bradford and Newcastle, c1905-1929; his membership of the United Patternmakers' Association, from 1912, and his work as a full time Union Official from 1929-1966; and his membership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) General Council, 1947-1967, particularly his year as Chairman of the TUC, 1955-1956.

Three scrapbooks containing press cuttings, correspondence, manuscripts and printed material, 1891-1897, regarding Bedford's experiences as Labour candidate for Norwich in the 1892 General Election, his presidency of the General Railway Workers Union, work on the Bethnal Green Board of Guardians and accusations of corruption levelled at him by labour colleagues and trade unionists (1891-1897).

The archive consists of correspondence, notebooks and diaries, press cuttings, photographs and other papers. The papers include diaries of Helen's youthful travels in Bosnia and Dalmatia with her family and also some documents pertaining to her later political career. The majority of the collection, however, consists of correspondence: over 2,000 individual letters, spanning the period from around 1914 until the 1960s and documenting many aspects of Helen's life and career. Letters written to Helen's mother from Cairo during the First World War illuminate the British community in the Middle East and the history of Palestine during the conflict. Letters written to Norman give insights into the land army, work at Woolwich Arsenal and trade union activity and also contain information about her brother Hugh Franklin and his suffrage activities at this date. The long and detailed letters to Helen's mother from Jerusalem, 1919-1932 document the history of the British Mandate as well as the evolution of Helen's personal attitude towards Palestine, Jerusalem and the Jewish nation itself. There are frequent references to the political situation and to figures such as Balfour and Herbert Samuel, along with personal observations about every-day life.

The collection comprises two manuscript volumes relating to Henry Broadhurst's life and work. Volume 1 contains minutes of the Advanced Liberal Association of the Borough of Greenwich 30 May 1874; Broadhurst's statement on collectivism; an address to the cooperative society on 'Old age pensions'; a draft letter ' to the editor of the Eastern Daily Press, 1891; a 'Life of Henry Broadhurst' including copies of several letters sent to Broadhurst (last dated 1905). Volume 2 contains minutes of the Gas Men's Defence Committee, 1872-1874, of which Broadhurst was Secretary, with two lists of subscribers, many of them women. There are also a number of loose papers in this volume relating to the Committee including minutes of a sub-committee, 1872-1874; accounts of relief granted; leaflets issued by the Committee; an expense sheet, 1873; subscriptions sheets; and cuttings regarding a gas stokers' case and the Master and Servants Act.
