Born in 1652, Edward Northey was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Queen's College, Oxford University. He entered Middle Temple, London, as a barrister in 1674. He served as Attorney General of England, 1701-1707 and 1710-1718, was knighted in 1702, and acted as MP for Tiverton, 1710.

The manuscript is inscribed 'Robert Savage' and 'Dom Dalton', and contains the bookplate of Robert Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden (1731-1797), It also contains the label of Jeremiah Bissell, Stationer, Chancery Lane, London.

Part of the Goldsmith's Library of Economic Literature, initially collected by Herbert Somerton Foxwell and presented by the Goldsmith's Company to the University of London in 1903.

Manuscript volume, 1701-1704, containing the legal opinions of Sir Edward Northey, Attorney General, on cases submitted by the Treasury Board between 2 Oct 1701 and 29 Sep 1704 on matters including Customs and Excise, maritime law including the Navigation Act, prizes taken by Her Majesty's ships of war, the colonies, the Post Office, and the armed forces.

The Society of Antiquaries of London holds papers relating to Sir Edward Northey's time as Attorney General, 1715-1716 (Ref: Ms 271), and the Harrowby Manuscripts Trust holds his opinions on the 1720 Bubble Act (Ref: Vol 33).
