These records contain material dealing with all aspects of County Medical Officers' work. The broad categories are: minutes, 1902-1907 and 1918-1974; correspondence, 1939-1974; plus a few photographs and miscellaneous items, 1905-1972.

Among the papers are several boxes of records generated by Dr Ramage's role as Association of County Medical Officers of Health representative on the Public Health and Housing (subsequently Health and Welfare) Committee of the County Councils Association. These consist of minutes and other circulated papers and subject files of correspondence, etc. As these records are not duplicated in the holdings of the Association of County Councils (formerly the County Councils Association) they have been retained as of considerable interest on local government health matters.

Papers of Ann Carlton, primarily relating to her work as Local Government Officer for the Labour Party between 1967 and 1974. There are also some papers from the late 1950s and early-mid 1960s when Michael Ward and later Joan Bourne were Local Government Officer. The collection primarily consists of papers from various groups and committees Carlton and her predecessors were involved with, particularly the Labour Party Home Policy sub-committees relating to local government, which the Local Government Officer was Secretary of. These were the Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1959-1960 and 1963-1964), the Regional and Local Government Advisory Committee (papers from 1965-1970), and the Regional and Local Government Sub-Committee (papers from 1970-1971). Carlton was also Secretary for the Association of Municipal Corporations Labour Group (papers from 1963-1973). Other papers relate to a Study Group on the Maud Report on the Management of Local Government (papers from 1964 and 1967), the Association of Education Committees and its future (papers from 1973-1974), and the reorganisation of local authority associations (papers from 1973). There are also copies of papers circulated to Labour groups from 1968-1972, and correspondence and press cuttings relating to Ann Carlton's work.

The papers have a particular focus on proposals to reorganise local government in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impact of this on local authority associations. The topics of housing and town planning, local government conferences and local elections also feature heavily.

The archive consists of awards and certificates presented to Lowe, a commemorative album describing her achievements, various photographs, medals, memorabilia, press cuttings and publications.

This catalogue includes minutes of the Metropolitan Borough and the Council committees. The collection also includes deeds of properties purchased by the Borough Solicitor, rate books, records of the Surveyors Department, including drainage plans for the Borough as well as files of the Town Clerk.

Notes, correspondence, press-cuttings and ephemera found in the Burns library. Correspondents include Charles Booth (1903). Press-cuttings cover subjects such as unemployment, local government, religion, and trades unions. Transcripts relating to local taxation in Edinburgh from 1745 to 1760, including:

1. 'Memorandum offered by the members of the College of Justice appointed by the Faculty of Advocates and Society of Writers to the Signet to the preses and other remanent stent-masters of the city of Edinburgh in relation to the imposing the stent on the inhabitants of the town for the year 1749'. The memorandum, dated 18 July 1749, contains eight questions put to the stent-masters, and these are answered in the following eight pages of the manuscript, written for the most part in another hand, and dated 19 July 1749.
2. A 'Report to the Faculty of Advocates of the stent-masters appointed by them to meet with the stent-masters of the town of Edinburgh for imposing the stent or cess for the year 1749', written in the second hand. A note in the original hand says that the reports were 'drop'd'.
3. Comments on the collusion between the Faculty of Advocates and the Town Council regarding the stent-masters, with a copy of a letter to George Chalmers, writer to the Signet, from Robert Thomson of Aberdeen, dated 13 Feb 1745, concerning stents at Aberdeen.
   4. The final leaf, dated 14 Jul 1760, contains in a third hand an 'Estimate of the land cess and trade stent to be imposed by the...Magistrats & Town Council of Edinburgh for the service of the year, viz. from 25 March 1759 to 25 March 1760'.
