História biográfica

The London and Middlesex Archaeological Society was founded to encourage the study of archaeology, local history and historic buildings in the City and county of London and surrounding area. During it's existence that brief has widened to include the preservation of such sites. It promotion of such activites continues today through lecture programmes, visits, conferences, research committees and projects often in conjunction with other societies, and through the publication of its own annual journal, the Transactions, and ad hoc monographs. The Society's inaugural meeting was in December 1855 at Crosby Hall; and its first headquarters was at 6 Southampton Street (1855-1857), moving subsequently to various sites in the same area, before finally settling at the Bishopsgate Institute in 1911. It is now based at the Museum of London.

The records were deposited officially in March 1991 by Mike Curtis, LAMAS Honorary Secretary, although they had been lodged in the repository since the appointment of Richard Samways (Greater London Record Office's principal assistant archivist) as LAMAS Honorary Archivist. There was a small subsequent deposit in 1996.

Records of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, relating not only to the everyday administration of the Society (Acc/2899/01 and Acc/2899/02), but also to social and educational activities. Acc/2899/03 contains a large quantity of information relating to the latter. In the main the records date from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1970's, although there is a sizeable amount of earlier material, and a small amount for later years

Material has been weeded out of all series that was duplicated within the collection; or of a routine administrative nature not felt worthy of long term preservation.

The records have been arranged into three series:
Acc/2899/01 Administration;
Acc/2899/02 Finance; and
Acc/2899/03 Records of social activities.

These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information are subject to access restrictions under the UK Data Protection Act, 1998.

Copyright to these records rests with the City of London.
